Woodstock of atheists
Re: Woodstock of atheists
That sort of event is so gringo.
Re: Woodstock of atheists
I'd like to have been there.
I follow many of the people that are going to speak at this event on twitter, so I guess I'm there in "spirit"

Re: Woodstock of atheists
I wish we could have something like that here in Mexico, not in my lifetime...
Re: Woodstock of atheists
That rally sounds pretty cool. I'd love to go too.

Are they all gonna take out their wallets and throw all their money into the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool?
You know, that whole "In God We Trust" thing.

Not really my fault that your country takes offense for about 10% of its words. And you're the one to talk about being nationalist.kv wrote:you're right lets go with wiki over the dictionary and larry always must mean well when he posts racist or nationalist stuff my badperkana wrote:It's notkv wrote:grin·go (grngg)Larry B. wrote:

But ok, let me rephrase it: that sort of event is so typical of the American culture.
Oh, and fuck you.
Re: Woodstock of atheists
Uh, no, actually it's not. Not even close. There are many places in this country were you can be ostracised from your family, fired, ran out of town etc., just for saying you don't believe in any god(s)Larry B. wrote: that sort of event is so typical of the American culture.
All you have to do is read about what just happened to Jessica Alquist or how long an Atheist billboard lasts when they go up. Rarely do they last the night without being vandalized.
So having an event like this, were people can go, hopefully without a fear of losing a relationship with family or friends, losing their job or their home, is a good thing and one that sadly doesn't happen enough here.

'That sort of event' = 'A rally for whatever reason'.crater wrote:Uh, no, actually it's not. Not even close. - we're catholic and we must be heard, let's make a rally!
- we're atheist and we must be heard, let's make a rally!
- we're gay and we must be heard, let's make a rally!

I don't agree with you on that Larry, living in a fucking 90% catholic country who clamours the Pope on streets and feels that his visit will help us morally with our drug troubles (fuck that!), I really would like an event like this to take place. But I'm afraid we atheists are more hated than homosexuals.Larry B. wrote:Not really my fault that your country takes offense for about 10% of its words. Re: Woodstock of atheists
Even here where religion is less important, atheists are viewed suspiciously. It's worse than being a smoker.perkana wrote:

Re: Woodstock of atheists
Hey, I think rallies can be fun too. I hardly ever go to them, but I recognize everybody has the right to set one up and/or attend to as many as they like. But I find it funny how there seem to be rallies for or against anything and everything up there.perkana wrote:I love rallies and everybody has a right to do it, what the fuck is wrong with that?Larry B. wrote:'That sort of event' = 'A rally for whatever reason'.crater wrote:Uh, no, actually it's not. And about living in a catholic country, hey, I'm with you on that. It's not easy being an atheist with a strong spirituality based on Hindu philosophy.
It specially pisses me off how everyone is a Catholic only on Sunday mornings, when someone dies (or is about to die) or when they have to answer a question in the Census.
Damn, people can be sensitive when someone points out a reality of their country... I wasn't even criticizing it. I just think it's funny, for Heavenly Father's sake.
Re: Woodstock of atheists
Well it's not only over 'there', we do all those kind of rallies too. Hey, I'm even going to buy a Pope shirt (like the one in the cartoon, instead of 'I wasn't raped by any priest', it says 'I wasn't abused...') and I would have worn that proudly when I got it, but will have to wait until all the buzz with the Pope is over

Re: Woodstock of atheists
Atheists being less liked than smokers? That's nothing
There was a recent Gallup poll here that ranked Atheists on about the same level as being a rapist, on who is more disliked.

It's a bit sketchy, but it's the only thing I've found.

Re: Woodstock of atheists
It's sort of ironic how much of a persecution complex atheists have.
Re: Woodstock of atheists
huh? are you serious? it's not a complex, it's a reality
At some conservative jobs here in Mexico you have to be like everyone, I've known people who are very capable but haven't gotten a job because of being atheists or liberals.

Yes, people running a business tend to want to hire people that they feel are in line with their values and morals. It happens.
I've been discriminated against for not being a catholic and a neoconservative.
I've also been discriminated against by not getting a job offer because my non minority status prevented them from meeting a quota.
So it cuts both ways.
I just don't know any other group that whines as much as atheists about how bad they have it, whereas most people don't ask about religious affiliation and don't care.
People tend to dislike atheists because they whine about things like "In God we Trust" on money. No one cares. Shut up.
