Navarro: What makes him great?
Re: Navarro: What makes him great?
Couldn't agree more. So much trauma going on there. Sending out healing thoughts x

Dave's guitar part at 1:07 in the 2011 montage vid below "makes him great" Why would Dave want to do any more recording with JA when his best playing since Ritual doesn't get included in the album. None of this cool sounding shit ended up on the record. That’s why TGEA was terrible.
Why was this montage of music not included on TGEA, Perry

I’m not sure this is the great example you think it is. I’d have never picked this out as anything noteworthy or even something identifiable as being Dave.lucio wrote: ↑Tue Mar 21, 2023 3:17 pmDave's guitar part at 1:07 in the 2011 montage vid below "makes him great" Why would Dave want to do any more recording with JA when his best playing since Ritual doesn't get included in the album. I think Dave's guitar sound, note choice, background layers of effects combined to set the mood well on that example. Your right it doesn't sound like Dave's typical guitar style. He got away from the 2.0 "Another soulmate" stuff for a minute and brought in some needed atmosphere that he's been missing. That's why I'm rating this example. Wish he could explore this direction more but it's not likely he will since it was cut from TGEA.Hokahey wrote: ↑Tue Mar 21, 2023 3:35 pmI’m not sure this is the great example you think it is. Speculation Alert
Dave’s fiancé has just posted “90” days on the gram. I think that means 90 days sober, and hopefully it goes for the both of them.
Great news I think.

Or it could be countdown to wedding???
Re: Navarro: What makes him great?
I hope he's getting well no matter the issue.
Re: Navarro: What makes him great?
Had this on in the car (cassette, yeah?), this is one of those superb Navarro moments. The point is made between 2'30" and 3'13"...

Re: Navarro: What makes him great?
Figured I'd ask here: does anyone know if Dave uses 9 or 10 gauge strings? Conflicting info online. I've heard him say he uses "lighter gauge" strings but not sure what he means by that.
Re: Navarro: What makes him great?
He did a promotional thing for Ernie Ball where he says he plays Ernie Ball strings and they flash up an image of a pack of nines and a pack of tens. So maybe he plays both? I’ve no idea if that counts as a definitive answer though - he doesn’t seem to actually mention what gauge he plays, they may have just used a stock image.Noonesshocking wrote: ↑Wed Apr 26, 2023 8:37 pmFigured I'd ask here: does anyone know if Dave uses 9 or 10 gauge strings? Thicker strings = heavier gauge. Thinner strings = lighter gauge.
Re: Navarro: What makes him great?
if he said lighter he prob means under 10, as 10 is sorta standard
Re: Navarro: What makes him great?
I kind of recall an episode of Dark Matter in which this question was asked, and Dave basically said "I don't know, ask Dan (Cleary) what I currently play."Noonesshocking wrote: ↑Wed Apr 26, 2023 8:37 pmFigured I'd ask here: does anyone know if Dave uses 9 or 10 gauge strings? So ask Dan.
Also, I don't know it tuning affects what gauge is used (not a guitar player), but Dan also made a joke about how one day, without anyone asking, he just decided he wasn't tuning Dave's guitar down a half step anymore, that Perry was just going to have to hit the original notes. And he did.
I wish I could tell you what episode it was on, but I know it happened.

Re: Navarro: What makes him great?
The 9 and 10 gauge refer to the high E string which is the bottom string…the low E string on the top and is usually the heaviest string. The lower the number the thinner the string and heavier strings tend to get a heavier sound but they tend to require more force to play. The school of thinking is the heaviest players use heavier strings but they can vary…if he said he played 11s I’d be shocked…the difference is definitely noticeable on the top strings…usually lighter gauge strings can help with leads and soloing, but 9 and 10 are close. I’m curious now if the 9 means his low E is a 42 and 10 means his low E is a 46…they make a lot of different variations now…sorry for the guitar geek out lol…damn now I’m wondering what gauge picks he usesNoonesshocking wrote: ↑Wed Apr 26, 2023 8:37 pmFigured I'd ask here: does anyone know if Dave uses 9 or 10 gauge strings? But simply the guys in Metallica probably play 10s or 11s but for a player like Dave 9s or lighter strings seem to make sense…heavy music heavy strings
Re: Navarro: What makes him great?
yup
10 46
9 42
10 46
9 42
Re: Navarro: What makes him great?
I play heavy bottoms 10-56, so there's lots of variety out there. Hell , I have a guitar with a bass string on it.

Re: Navarro: What makes him great?
Thanks everyone. I raised the question because I was fucking around with "Just Because" with 10's and realized the one bend in the main riff you have to pull off with one finger is actually pretty difficult to execute, so it made me suspect he may use 9's for that song at least.
I may throw a pair of 9's on and just see how all the JA songs I know how to play feels with them.

Re: Navarro: What makes him great?
Every time Perk posts an old picture of Dave on Instagram and says he loves him…I get nervous.
Re: Navarro: What makes him great?
Yeah I'm just waiting to hear that "long covid" was code for "lung cancer"
You just can't smoke for 50 years like that and not have it do SOMETHING.
Hang in there, Dave!
Re: Navarro: What makes him great?
I don't even watch Inkmaster anymore since Dave is barely on there.
