"El Ritual de Jane's Addiction" - Book coming out in a few days!
Hi everyone,
I'm a journalist from Argentina. Some time ago I told you about a book that I was writing: the first Spanish-bio of Jane's Addiction, mostly based on the Ritual era.
The book is finally done and it's coming out in Argentina, Spain and several Latin American countries in the next few days. It was done after 100hs of exclusive, brand new interviews with the whole band and lots of involved characters (see below).
EL RITUAL DE JANE'S ADDICTION
Fabrizio Pedrotti
Forewords by Perry Farrell and Mike Portnoy. Photos by John Eder, Steve Speller and AJ Barratt
Some of the interviewees: Perry Farrell, Eric Avery, Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins, Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit), Chino Moreno (Deftones), Henry Rollins (Black Flag), Scott Ian and Charlie Benante (Anthrax), Corey Glover (Living Colour), Nick Oliveri (Queens of the Stone Age), Jimmy Chamberlin (The Smashing Pumpkins), David J. (Bauhaus/Love and Rockets), Mike Muir (Suicidal Tendencies), Angelo Moore (Fishbone), Paul Leary (Butthole Surfers), Martyn LeNoble (Porno for Pyros), Gilby Clarke (Guns N’ Roses), Neil Strauss, Casey Niccoli, Dave Jerden, Chris Cuffaro, Ted Gardner, Ronnie Champagne, Paul V., Jane Bainter, Tom Recchion, Inger Lorre, Thomas Johnson, Karyn Cantor, T. Quake Mark, John Shenale, Geoff Stradling, Brian Virtue.
Some translated info from the backcover:
"Ritual de lo Habitual", the album that Jane's Addiction published in 1990, was one of the most important of its decade. It took alternative music out of university radios and achieved its massive diffusion, but also predicted the explosion of grunge -which would happen next year with Nirvana- and was a decisive influence for groups like Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.
This book recounts the creating process of an album full of egos wars, heroin overdoses, chaotic shows, censorship and problems with the police. It was an extreme and unusual album for the time, for its sound and its themes related to sex, suicide, racism and AIDS. "Ritual de lo Habitual" installed the group as a referent, achieved double platinum and gave birth to the festival that would change the music business: the Lollapalooza.
From more than a hundred hours of interviews, conducted over five years with the complete band (Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Eric Avery and Stephen Perkins), as well as managers, producers, related artists and friends; and with access to unpublished documents, the author reconstructs for the first time an exciting musical adventure. And fundamentally, it answers a key question: why did Jane's Addiction create its masterpiece while its members went through the worst moment of their lives?
"Someday I will publish my autobiography, and this book will help me refresh my memory."
-Perry Farrell (Jane's Addiction).
"Very rarely, the plot behind an album is as exciting as its songs."
-Jimmy Chamberlin (The Smashing Pumpkins).

Looks great; Congratulations and I hope it does well for you. I can't read Spanish, but hopefully I can manage a read somehow in the future. I didn't like the other book on Jane's (was it Brendan O'Brien's ?) It was anecdotal if I remember and lacked any rich context in a coherent linear fashion.
Too, I am kind of surprised Pete DeStefano wasn't interviewed. He must have been at least on the scene at the end of the RDLH era.

Oh and love that Corey Glover was! Did you manage to speak to Vernon Reid? I know he made some comments recently about the use of the N word (by a white dude) and the choice of Don't Call Me Whitey, N****** in general in their last sets
Re: "El Ritual de Jane's Addiction" - Book coming out in a few days!
That's awesome.
Congratulations!
Congratulations!

Thank you. You mean the Brendan Mullen's one, that book was written in an "oral" format.SR wrote: ↑Mon Feb 18, 2019 10:53 amLooks great; Congratulations and I hope it does well for you. This one has a different approach: it's linear, but it also has some cliffhangers that implies that if you don't read the full book, you won't get the story. That's why you have Pedro (the rooster) on the cover, for example. He appears a lot of times along with Graciela!
This is a rock biography with exclusive and new material, and it's not written in the oral-story style.
Sadly, Peter wasn't available for interviews, but Martyn gives a good insight on PFP at the end of the book.

Vernon was another of the options, but I tried to have only one musician from each related band (the only exception being Anthrax).
I went with Corey because he had some great memories from the first Lollapalooza and gave some cool info about Perry's voice.

I hope to get the book soon and give it a read. Thank you for your work!

Conratulations! Sounds like it will be a good read.
Will it be sold in Canada or on Amazon?
I'm interested to read it. I hope that my three years of high school Spanish will be enough to understand it.
I really like the cover illustration.

Love the picture.
I don't have any Spanish, really hope there's an English translation in the pipeline...

Congratulations! Hope it does well for you. And yes, please get an English translation in the pipeline!
Re: "El Ritual de Jane's Addiction" - Book coming out in a few days!
Surely the interviews were translated FROM English since all the interviewees are American.

Yes, be sure I'm looking forward to an English release. I would love to have it translated to all languages, even if it's only for Kindle. The thing with interviews is that it's not just a copy/paste of what the interviewees told me. Their words are embebbed in the narration, let's say.
It really depends on the publishers. I'm sure that if they get requests, they will consider that even more. But it's my main objective, so I will be pushing that. You will be the first to know.
Having a Jane's book released in Spanish (and with a major publisher) is something that seemed impossible, so I'm going to party all night long

Congratulations! Seems like a fresh take on a tired band. I’d definitely purchase an English version. Hope it sells well.

Re: "El Ritual de Jane's Addiction" - Book coming out in a few days!
Thank you. Yes, I was looking to do a fresh take. There's a lot of info that wasn't clear about that era and some interesting facts that I think were not addressed before. I had the opportunity to ask the band about several rumours that were floating around for so long about the songs and things like that.
I also obtained access to a strictly limited document that Warner released at the time for their employees in 1990, with 100% accurate information about sales, rankings and performances of the album, as it was for internal communication. It has more than 30 pages, and that info appears on the book publicly for the first time (with the blessing of the person who wrote the document, of course).

Did Perry say when the 3 Days poem would be released?

Quoting Perry, the manuscript is one page long and Etty has it, "because she likes to conserve those things".
