Dave got his gold "Tele" Starfield Cabriolet Back
Dave got his gold "Tele" Starfield Cabriolet Back
Back in his possession 26 years later. Probably his most identifiable guitar from the Ritual era. You can see it in the Milan video. Probably a prototype for the first Starfield Cabriolet later made for Ibanez. It seems to have been refinished in yellow at some point after he smashed the guitar at Lolla.
Re: Dave got his gold "Tele" Starfield Cabriolet Back
wonder what the story is and why he didn't get it back sooner. Please change the neck, Dave, headless necks are the absolute worst lookwise
Re: Dave got his gold "Tele" Starfield Cabriolet Back
I think it's probably snapped off.
Re: Dave got his gold "Tele" Starfield Cabriolet Back
He didn't get it back.
Dan Cleary tracked it down recently, and convinced the owner to give it to Dave for his Bday last night on Dark Matter in exchange for one of Dave's PRS's.
Story: Dave got into a fight/argument with Perry at the very first Lolla 91 show. It got smashed and thrown during the show. The dude in possession of the guitar was the one who ended up with it's broken pieces. Dave ended up borrowing a guitar (a PRS) from Rollins Band's guitar player and has used them ever since.
After talking with the guy a bit about the story behind him losing the guitar, he decided he just wanted to take some pictures with it and wanted the guy to just keep it, as he claimed he doesn't have any Jane's stuff around his house so it wasn't like he was going to hang it on his wall or anything.

So, in the end, who cares?

The people here on this board who document everything 1987-1991 Jane's Addiction.Mescal wrote:So, in the end, who cares?

So, he's not nostalgic about the Jane's guitars I wonder where the Nothing's Shocking guitar ended up. Wasn't that one stolen at some point? That one was fucking gorgeous. Ibanez or Tele I believe....
:edit: Funny....some people are, some aren't.....I recently started following John 5 on some social media....just an amazing player and a really interesting person. He appears to be a nut about his guitars....an acolyte in the church of telecaster. I read somewhere where he took one of his in for an upgrade and was like a family member in the waiting room during open heart surgery. Froosh had a strat for years with the Chilis and gave it to Kling when he left.....JE had a collection of basses he amassed while with The Who....

Re: Dave got his gold "Tele" Starfield Cabriolet Back
yeah John 5 is a major collector of vintage teles and an amazing guitar player. I'd say top three instrumentalists in the world when it comes to chops, originality, style, coolness, diversity. They guy is a super dedicated monster. His left hand is actually bigger than his right because he played so much as a child!
Re: Dave got his gold "Tele" Starfield Cabriolet Back
didn't know that fun/weird factoid. I've mentioned it before but I took my kid years ago to a Drop in the Bucket benny hosted by Rollins at a club here in LA with a ton of musicians doing covers.....DN and John 5 ended up onstage together and I though 5 outshined him. Anyways I texted my son recently about some flamenco I stumbled across J5 doing on youtube and he referred me to Roland Dyens whom I had never heard of.....another true gem.....died recently, I believe....I think he had a relationship with Berklee....wonder if Casey Contrarian knew him?
Re: Dave got his gold "Tele" Starfield Cabriolet Back
In my experience there are a lot of guitar players that bond with a certain guitar but many of them are just tools for their jobs. I get to talk to Gary (Clark) and Jimmie (Vaughan) quite a bit as I spend a lot of time killing my liver at Antone's and they're complete opposites when it comes to collecting instruments. It's interesting to see/hear.SR wrote:So, he's not nostalgic about the Jane's guitars I wonder where the Nothing's Shocking guitar ended up. Wasn't that one stolen at some point? My late friend Kent Finlay would tell me stories about the Nashville peeps he knew and their collections however, it seemed all those session players were complete gear heads and almost addicting to getting new gear.
Re: Dave got his gold "Tele" Starfield Cabriolet Back
It would only make sense; I get attached as a fan .....Princes' 'blond' tele gives me a fuckin boner, Frooshs' sunburst 50's strat....even the Brahms bass to an extent....so many....as a player it must be amazing to be part of iconic cultural landscapes. People are complex, and I don't respect the decisions DN has made, but measuring his losses in life a guitar must rank fairly low if at all on his list.
Re: Dave got his gold "Tele" Starfield Cabriolet Back
I have a Mad Cat copy namely because Prince played one so I get it. We all have vices, I think with Dave music is just a job to him its not really a passion at this point. Jimmie has his brother's actual #1 which obviously he cherishes but his brother almost refused to play a huge gig without it due to the neck needing to be repaired, so each of these dudes are different. I personally have guitars that I inherited that despite their value would never sell due to the emotional attachment to them and my grandfather but then there are others in my collection I bought that I feel the same about and some that if there was a fire and I lost them it would be "meh just a guitar".SR wrote:It would only make sense; I get attached as a fan .....Princes' 'blond' tele gives me a fuckin boner, Frooshs' sunburst 50's strat....even the Brahms bass to an extent....so many....as a player it must be amazing to be part of iconic cultural landscapes. Re: Dave got his gold "Tele" Starfield Cabriolet Back
I understand. Not with guitars, but there are items that I've inherited that I know have monetary value, but I sincerely don't ever look at them like that. In a warped way, they have taken almost a place of imperfect substitution....hard to explain, but they would never be sold and will be fiercely protected and passed on.
Re: Dave got his gold "Tele" Starfield Cabriolet Back
Same, I think people are similar in that there are things that mean more than money to us and we want those items to stay in our family's possession or at least into the possession of someone we consider family. If I were a betting man I would think that Dave likely has some of his mom's belongings somewhere that he cherishes in a similar fashion.
Re: Dave got his gold "Tele" Starfield Cabriolet Back
Dave also said that he is going to Canada next week for LSD and DMT therapy. I have heard good things about it for people with depression and PTSD. It will be interesting to hear how it goes.
Re: Dave got his gold "Tele" Starfield Cabriolet Back
I just hope that it's not something that causes him to relapse.creep wrote:Dave also said that he is going to Canada next week for LSD and DMT therapy. I have heard good things about it for people with depression and PTSD. It will be interesting to hear how it goes.
I know it's a whole different thing from opiates, but still.... fingers crossed.
Re: Dave got his gold "Tele" Starfield Cabriolet Back
Many in recovery (even fringe or loosely attached groups) believe any voluntary effort to get altered or fucked up is a relapse. To those who aren't junkies or drunks, it's impossible to describe.....but getting fucked up again is a very dangerous thing to do. Again, people are complicated and DN lives his life very differently than most. Wish him well.....
Re: Dave got his gold "Tele" Starfield Cabriolet Back
wow, must be pretty serious stuff. Please post updates if/when you hear something so I don't have to listen to that mess of a show Dark Mattercreep wrote:Dave also said that he is going to Canada next week for LSD and DMT therapy. Relapses aside, is DN now living completely clean? No beer, nothing?

God that would be awful, what a horrible way to live. Not being able to have a beer or two due to the danger of relapsing onto drugs.someguy wrote:Sounds like it- he even quit smoking cigs.nausearockpig wrote:Relapses aside, is DN now living completely clean? No beer, nothing?

It does suck. A beer buzz is the gateway to warm phone calls and reminiscing with old pals. This leads to wanting to feel something more and that usually is your drug of choice. A beer buzz is not enough. You're constantly searching for that next level. Then a night turns into a week of calling in sick, etc. I live it.nausearockpig wrote:God that would be awful, what a horrible way to live. I don't think Dave ever drank even when he wasn't clean??
For me these days a beer buzz leads to cheeseburgers, pizza and ice cream.

Used to be that way but thats all in the passed. These days I vape some weed and a couple of glasses of whiskey and I'm good.
