Wow. Did Perry steal your woman or something?

I recall a proper set of freaks being at the back for the Nottingham show
Yay! I was one of them!

I'd agree with some of the other posts about this - those late 2003 UK club shows were a brief return to form and pretty special, and I'm sure a lot of that is due to what was obvious tension within the band - I don't think Perry and Dave interacted with each other at all the whole gig, with Dave in particular looking like he really wanted to be somewhere else.

At the time the set list was disappointing but not unexpected - a band's on the road promoting a new album, you expect to hear some of the new stuff, right? With hindsight I'm actually pretty happy about it now, given that they never play anything from Strays other than Just Because and the occasional Superhero when it's a "non Jane's" crowd. It's not like there's limited opportunities to hear the "classic" setlist now, is it? For what it's worth, I seem to remember (although memories of the evening are a bit, er, hazy) the crowd was pretty onboard with the new material and knew the songs. Perry was getting a bit frustrated with the crowd singing along to Just Because - they did the acoustic arrangement which Perry sang part of the chorus with different timing and the crowd were singing it the "album" way - he was trying without success to get the crowd to stop singing on the choruses.

I think for me Strays (the album) was a disappointment that first got me thinking that Jane's didn't have it anymore. Whether I thought that was specifically a "Perry" thing though, not too sure. At the time, iirc, dave was getting a lot of the heat for the way Ezrin produced it as a "mainstream" sounding rock album. The weird thing is, although it never stood up to ns or rdlh I didn't dislike Strays, I just thought that, 15 years on, that was what they had left and, poorer though it was, it was still a lot better than most other albums out at the time. What changed that for me was when TGEA came out. I know I'm swimming against the tide here on this one, but I really like TGEA and specifically, regardless of the strength of the lyrics, or indeed the singing, to me it sounds like Jane's Addiction, and knowing now that they could at least sound like that, it's made me really hate Strays to the extent that I literally can't listen to it any more - I've tried and I just sit there thinking what a waste it was to make an album sounding like that when they did still have it in them to sound like (imho) Jane's Addiction.

I missed the NINJA reunion for reasons too boring to go into, and dodged a bullet prevaricating and ending up (just) deciding not to go to Leeds Festival to see them when they ended up not playing due to Perry's throat, but since then, every time they come this way and I think about getting tickets, I play some recent live stuff on youTube, remind myself that Perry really doesn't physically have it in him to sing the songs any more, and pass. I'm reconciled to that late 2003 gig being my last Jane's show, and I'm pretty happy with that as the memory.

Are the pre Dave Dizastre demo's out there?

If so, could anybody please upload.

I would like to analyze what exactly his part was in the band.

Thanks

I enjoyed the show in Brighton UK that I saw in 03...

But that was just before I joined xiola and started to peek behind the curtain...

That show is actually the reason I found/joined xiola - I wanted to see if Sonny could sell me a copy of the show from the BBC broadcast. He could, he did, I joined, I learned way more about my former heroes than I ever wished I had, and here I am contributing to my own thread about how they let us all down.

The cracks started to show when Gift debuted in '93. However, things got worse with Perry's interviews in '96 while promoting Good Gods Urge...he didn't sound like an artistic genius, he sounded like a moronic druggy. Once Porno started playing Jane's songs live and the Relapse tour was announced, I knew he wasn't exactly the "real deal" anymore. It was still bearable but it wasn't the same. Once I heard that he was reuniting Jane's without Eric for a new album called "Hypersonic", I was done.
