Does everyone remember the exact moment when...

#1 Post by Everybody's Friend » Tue Jun 02, 2015 12:33 pm

...you realized that Perry was a hack who had tarnished his legacy forever (in your eyes)?

I remember trying really hard to keep an open mind to the idea of Satellite Party....I was like, give them a chance, right? I even 1/2 liked a few of the songs when they were performed at Lolla prior to official release.

I remember being on Xiola and seeing the release of the album art. I actually got angry.

I'm over it all - it's just farce now, but I was interested to cast back and see if I could identify the EXACT moment that the tide changed forever.

Just curious. :dunce:

**Edit / Clarification: This isn't meant to be another "they suck so bad now" thread. We all know that (even Bman and Drifter, they are just in denial). I'm curious to know if anyone else had a visceral moment when they just realized with clarity what a goatshow that man had become?) :wiggle:

This is an interesting question.

I have a sort of interesting answer.

I think it was the first time I saw them (him) in concert at the '97 relapse in Portland. I wouldn't go so far as to say a hack, but definitely not what I was hoping for. I saw the Hammerstein show earlier on 120 Minutes and was blown away, could not wait for the show. I was a HUGE fan right before Relapse (like from '95, I was young/innocent before that :hehe: )

Anyways, he comes out in tight jeans that are rolled up into shorts, and for some reason I just didn't get into it. May have been my seats or my mood or who knows what. Not to say I was disappointed with the show, just he wasn't this god in my mind anymore, he was just some regular singer/good frontman for a great alternative rock band. Maybe my expectations were too high. Honestly my best moments with this band were spent in the dorms with headphones and albums then the boots, or on a road trip in the car just blasting it with Southern Utah Canyonlands in the background and the sun setting while I am bouncing down a dirt road scampering for a place to pitch my tent. I thought that was one of the best moments of my life, and it still is in a way, regarless of whatever Perry Farrell has done since, or in the future.

Sorry for too much information, just got me thinking............ :tiphat:

I could see it coming in small increments starting with the 2001 tour but probably the corner was turned when I saw them on NYE at The Wiltern in LA in '02 months before Strays was released. Not a really bad show by any stretch but it was clear Perry was well on his way to becoming a mediocre parody of his former self.

First signs were around his DJ Peretz era, and then Satellite Party.

I saw Satellite Party in a very small club about 2007 and actually enjoyed the gig. Whether I enjoyed it out of sheer embarrassment or because I don't know. I do remember everyone singing 'More Than Words' to Nuno for half the gig.

Perry in a golden suit or wearing a horse tail...Before that, I still had some reasonable doubt about where he was going (saw him perform as DJ Peretz and had fun but was more stoked because it was the first time I saw him, I still like SYTBS but yeah, he lost me with SP).

I saw the '02 shows at the Rain in Vegas and then the Warfield in SF. Both before Strays was released and I remember enjoying the new songs played in Vegas (Hypersonic and True Nature) but not enjoying the new song I heard in SF (Bring the Mood). All these years later and I've come to the conclusion that I only enjoyed the new songs in Vegas because they were new songs from the band and not because they were good, because when I heard the studio versions when they leaked I wasn't feeling them.

I then saw them for what has been the last time in December of '03 and I seem to remember that each song that was played off of Strays that night was met by the audience about as warmly as an audible fart in an elevator. The band launched into Stop!, the first song they played that night and ended up playing the majority of it instrumental before Perry even appeared on stage and I knew then that something just wasn't right with the band. It wasn't too long after that Not So Silent Night show that the band broke up.

The strange thing about the band breaking up that December to me was the month before I saw Banyan (11-28 and 11-29) and at the 11-28 show overheard Perk talking to Nels and he seemed pretty excited to be playing shows with Marilyn Manson, but as we all know now all those shows ended up being scrapped. So I have always felt that the person who wanted Perry gone was Dave and he was the one who talked the other two into dumping Perry.

So yeah. I've always hated SYTBS, hated the cover they went with on Strays, hated Perry doing the DJ/electronic music thing. Come to think of it, I've not liked a single new thing Perry has done musically since the first Porno for Pyros record.

It was when he did an interview with Rollingstone after Dave, Chaney, and Perk fired him for spending all his time focusing on his DJing instead of on the band, and he said that HE is the one who broke up the band because "Jane only strips for me" and "her majesty had been destroyed by new masters"

I recall thinking it was a super weirdo thing to say.

Then he started blaming Dave's reality show as the reason for the split, even though it filmed during the same months Perry refused to do anything Jane's related because he admitted he was busy with Lollapalooza.

Then Hoka started posting all of Etty's lies on the old ANR about TPC not being able to get a record deal and how they were trying to be Aerosmith and get massive MTV play or some shit, which was weird if you had listened to ANY of their weirdass songs about Ouija boards that had NO CHANCE of major airplay.

Then Satellite Party posted that lame album cover, then they posted a redone version of the lame album cover where Perry cropped the entire band out so that only he and Etty were present and he slapped "Perry's Farrell's" above the band name.

Then came the dumbass story of Satellite Party about a guy getting injured in a flashmob and a beautiful asian nurse saving him and their radio played music that invited them into the heavens for a party in space. Meanwhile he had already been doing flashmobs like 4 years prior with Jane's Addiction, proving that he was incapable of letting an idea go and not understanding that flashmobs were culturally significant for a short period of time.

Then came Nuno and Tony Kanal quitting Satellite Party because all Perry wanted to do was play Jane's and PFP songs at shows instead of the album they wrote together, and he replaced them with a bunch of no names willing to do his Jane's Karoake. Then came the DJing where he did dance party Jane Says with Etty.

It's been all downhill since like 2004 for that guy. Just bad decisions and lame art and even worse songs.

July 18 02 Rain Vegas....they played 3 new songs hypersonic..may have been first time played live...true nature...and suffer some which bummed me out...i got lenobles set list and remember thing I wish this didnt have these new crappy songs on it...i did love lenoble on bass...so when he was fired was a wtf Perry moment...but even the la dress rehearsal show before Hammerstein...i had a Perry twing....they played been caught stealing....only time that tour I think and it was this scripted thing where Perry had this bag of stuff he stole and he and a couple dancers went through the bag and were throwing it's glittery contents in the air...could have been with etty...hell that could really be the exact moment the tide turned...but that was a great show aside from bcs...like panda said the bye wiltern show was a low water mark....i stopped seeing them after that only seeing them at a Avery club show

I still love Perry and the old music is still great...and even way back when they used to be super hot or cold at shows...but they don't have that energy anymore...no fire

I seem to recall that what really got the Etty lies train rolling was when Erik from 1% and now JA.org fame busted her for having two accounts on xiola. It was shown that with her second account she was posting much of the garbage you mentioned, the record deal and the Aerosmith stuff and probably other things I no longer remember.

Crater- what was that last '03 show like between band members? Were there any underhand comments made by Perry?

Side note- does anyone have that interview with Pete D where he says he played SP stuff for Eric and that Eric thought it was really good and wanted to play on it? I've always thought that was interesting since that is considered a real turning point for Perry, for the worse, of course.

I saw Sattelite Party at the Highline Ballroom in NYC and thought they were actually pretty good, way more rocking than that lame CD and they played 3 Jane's songs. Next time "Sattelite Party" played NY it was at a 1/3 full Irving Plaza with a new guitar player and drummer and it was Jane'/P4P karaoke.

That started it, as the years passed and his voice would give out more often, I was still showing up. Then, three straight NY shows they opened with Underground and Mountain Song. Even though the last show ended up being really good, I'm older and have more shit to do that is the moment I think of when I decide to skip their shows.

I'm not faulting Hoka by the way. That wasn't a dig at him. He was being provided what he thought was credible information by a person who had treated him very nicely up until that point.

But once Perry and Etty jumped on the Spreading Lies train, I was out.

It only made the two of them look even worse the more they involved themselves in trying to cover up the fact that the two of them were the assholes in the entire situation.

Strays was the beginning of the end for me. That's when it started becoming apparent that it was the Perry Farrell show, and not about Jane's Addiction. That horribly overproduced album of cock rock that sound a lot better in the demo stages

Now it's just the Perry and Etty show. I read what you guys say about her in that Etty's Deep Thoughts thread and I laugh even though it's so mean, because she just brings it on herself. I've never seen two people just believe so hard that they're relevant to today's scene, whatever that even is anymore. I remember when Pitchfork did their Worst Album Cover of 2007 list and they had the Satellite Party cover on there. It said something like "Finally...the debut from Native American Smurf" and I laughed pretty hard at that

They both bring it on themselves. If they made poor choices, but were cool humble people I think they would get a lot more leeway.

The fact that they are both complete and utter douchebags, and liars, and love to rub their wealth and vacations in the faces of people around them (while simultaneously talking about how hard their lives are), and treat service industry people like shit, it doesn't make it hard to laugh at them when they fall flat on their face.

Dave?

Definitely Strays for me. But all the weird interviews before SP was released was sticking a fork in Perry IMO

Strays. You can just hear the difference between Ritual & Strays on so many fundamental levels. Production, song quality, singing, bass lines... It's missing that special something.

I actually think it was when Perry put out these shitty electronic flash videos/beats on his old website around 2002, but I was in denial because the "Hyperleaked" tracks were kind of interesting, and the band was "back", and actually through 2003 a lot of new people really liked Just Because. I think the fact that I tried to like Strays and it just didn't ever click was the end. Perry's idiotic Teddy Ruxpin theme song lyrics and melody on To Match The Sun really couldn't be taken seriously. Seeing PerryEtty do weird karaoke-laptop versions of Stop! and Been Caught Stealing at a club show where they were easily the worst act (and I didn't even like the other performers) was probably another low point where giving up entirely became a live option. I listened to the Great Escape bullshit a couple of times, the same way I'll watch a new Simpsons episode. I don't really like it, but it's tradition. :wavesad:

Listening to Hyperleaked. I remember thinking "this isn't very good" and then dismissing the thought. But the seed was planted.

I hated 01 - Satellite Party. I actually think there's still a couple of good songs on Satellite Party's cd. I like The Solutionists, Milky Avenue, and Insanity Rains. I love Admit I off of SYTBS. I just think they should have been Porno Songs, or, just quick side projects that didn't take years and years to make.

I thought the Jubilee tour was a mailed in event. Boring. I still don't listen to Strays and it was clear on 03 lollapalooza that it was not going to last. Avery coming back was great but Perry was kind of stiff on tour. I think the recent tours have been very good shows and Perry is FAR less cringe worthy than he was at some points in recent history. The shows still pack a punch and some nights Perry is still one of the best frontmen.

Perry presenting Lollapalooza 2003 was a moment that I realize something was changing... and not for the good.

Having vivid memory of an good old Perry leaving Lolla mid-90's because festival had lost original spirit and was too mainstream, creating a freaky Enit. After 7 year, I have to see Perry on a press conference talking about importance of sponsors in nowadays music...

Was the beginning of the end.

The day I signed up for a JA message board.

I stopped caring for them after I saw this show:
