Janes on Vinyl

#1 Post by Pandemonium » Sat Mar 14, 2015 10:22 pm

Ugh. I'm slowly but surely getting sucked into the current vinyl record fad. Buying "new" pressings of old albums is hit and miss and I'm kind of picking my battles either replacing well worn original copies I still have, re-buying some stuff I stupidly sold off in the late 90's or in some cases, picking up favorite bands classics that have generally well regarded new pressings (like Led Zeps 1st four albums).

Anyway, I noticed Janes had a 180gram vinyl released of NS a few years ago as well as a double LP "audiophile" vinyl release of Ritual around the same time. Nothing's Shocking seems fairly easy to still get but the RDLH double LP looks extremely rare. Anyone have either and can comment on how they stack up to the originals as far as sound quality?

I had one of these for about a decade, inherited it from my wifes family collection from the 70s, but it was such a hassle to move with, one time we decided to just donate it....but goodwill wouldn't take it, so we just left it in their parking lot.

15 years later it's probably still there, though probably looks worse for wear now...

We had one of those things, only when I was about 5 years old someone broke into our house and stole it. No joke. When it's brought up my mom still to this day laughs about it, because it weighed close to 5,000 lbs. (slight exaggeration) and she wanted it out of the house anyways but no one wanted it. Well, almost no one.

I have the original albums bought as they came out but especially my copy of NS is pretty worn out. I've bought some of the "Rhino Vinyl 180gm" re-issues recently for other bands and most of them sound great, even a little better than the CD releases (Van Halen's debut album sounds amazing on vinyl).

Yeah, same here back in the late 60's. My dad used to play Johnny Cash albums on that thing on the weekend and drive us kids nuts. We had our TV in a similar giant cabinet.

I have the 2 lp ritual one, bought it new in like 2008 or something

The 2 lp ritual sounds really great, but don t really know where it came from. I mean, is it a legit repress?

I had a 1 lp german press before, but sold that one.

The 2 LP Rhino pressing is indeed legit. What adds to it's collectability is it was a 2008-ish Record Store Day exclusive. I forget the amount pressed, maybe 5000, but it's pretty hard to find at a reasonable price now.

I have this release:

http://www.discogs.com/Janes-Addiction- ... se/1528870

Didn't know the RSD releases were so hard to pick up. I came across them pretty often ... But they weren't that cheap to begin with (25 - 30 €)

I thought that the consensus was that there was nothing special about the Rhino reissues (no remastering or anything).

So why not pick up an original US release?

I may have it at home. I got the reissue of RDLH on record day in 09

I'll check later. If I do you can buy it off me for what I paid

If it's the double LP release, yeah I'll be happy to nab it from you.

What did you decide on this?

I saw these posts a while back and they put me off the Rhino pressing:

Isn't that one supposed to sound like toilet also? Not suggesting you shouldn't, but I seem to recall reading somewhere that the quality was....lacking.
