Where do your name handles come from?

#1 Post by Bandit72 » Wed Feb 01, 2012 8:25 am

Some are a lot more obvious that others, but it'd be interesting to find out. Personal? Reference to something? Anything else?

Mine is pretty dull and comes from one-armed-bandit which is the industry sector in which I work in. The 72 is the year I was born. But we have a 70's foundation here in England which is a group of friends around the country who all have nicknames followed by the 70's year they were born. Not so long ago we all used to meet up in London and go out with bespoke shirts on.

Cool organization there!

Mine: when I was growing up and learning how to play drums, Larry Müllen Jr. (from U2) was my favorite drummer. Since I was a pretty big fan of his, my friends started calling me Larry (which is also shorter and easier to remember than my real name). When I started trying to play bass, my favorite bass player was Flea (whose real name is Michael Balzary). So, I decided that my pseudonym would be Larry Balzary and that Larry B. was short enough to use as a nick name.

It's been 13 years since the "Larry" thing, and some people still don't know my real name. I'm just "Larry". I kinda like that, since it allows me to keep my privacy.

"Pandemonium" from one of my favorite Killing Joke tunes, plus it fits my overall personality and ... um.. presence on this board.

My handle comes from greek mythology. When I was in highschool, I really enjoyed rading the myths and 'Artemis' was one of my fave goddesses.

I went to see Nels Cline play one night with Scott Amendola, Devin Hoff and this guy named Jhno that messed around on a laptop. The name of that group was Crater. They played well over an hour straight, no breaks, of what I imagine was mostly improvised music. I enjoyed it very much so I bought their CD. It has two tracks on it, one of which is 41:41 and the other 38:13 in length.

If you're interested, here are a few samples of what I heard that night

And that is where my username came from

Short for Anthony and actually what most people call me in the real world. Never liked being called Tony.

In the early days of the Internet when I was about 15 I was mowing my lawn, saw a grasshopper and started thinking about locusts and how devastating they can be to farms but are also a somewhat frightening thing when a swarm of them comes around.

Later that day I signed up for something online and needed a nickname and my earlier thought inspired a variation on the spelling of locust..."Lokus" sounded more like an actual name.

intertwoven (not interwoven) is just a random fake word that's fun to say that I happened to think of when I was registering on Xiola back in '04. I initially wanted to be somewhat anonymous, not "the SDW guy" (come on, royalty in the online Jane's community!! kiss the ring, bitch. what? no?); I don't think I use this username for anything other than Janes sites.
