New Cars
Re: New Cars
I'm leaning towards a used Audi A4. I want something secure and safe for my kiddo who is taking his drivers test next week.
Re: New Cars
make sure you get a solid warranty.
audis are notorious for electrical and transmission problems.
I wouldn't buy a used one.

Re: New Cars
i have a 2002 a4 and if i didn't know how to fix stuff myself it would cost me a fortune. i had to replace the turbo, water pump, timing belt and three window regulators so far. if i had to take it to the dealer to get all that done it would cost thousands. the water pump and timing belt sound simple but you have to take the whole front of the car off.wally wrote:make sure you get a solid warranty.

as far as the turbo i got a new aftermarket on ebay for $200. the audi one is well over 1k just for the part. the window regulators always fail and they are about $100 each. i think the car is fun to work on but for someone who doesn't work on cars i would never recommend one. the first thing to purchase for the car is a cable that you hook to your laptop to read the codes on the computer. the car is great for telling you what is wrong with it.
Re: New Cars
Hmm, now I'm concerned.
The car I am looking at has 22,000 miles. It is an A4 Sedan. I had no idea they were unreliable....in fact I thought the contrary. I surmised they were expensive to work on as I have owned a Saab Turbo in the past and like Creep's issue, they would have to pull the engine to replace a fucking hose.
Shit, I really liked this car.
Wally, is your information from owners? Periodicals? Understood/Universal notions on Audis?

Re: New Cars
if it only has 22k miles it is still under warranty unless it is over 4yrs old. 22k miles is nothing. you should be fine. mine has 130k.
Re: New Cars
No, it's an 06.....Carmax.....I think they sell a warranty.creep wrote:if it only has 22k miles it is still under warranty unless it is over 4yrs old. 22k miles is nothing. you should be fine. mine has 130k.
The car is beautiful. I think I'm enamoured with it.
Re: New Cars
Window regulators are fun (annoying). I learned how to do those when I briefly worked for (and was subsequently tragically hilariously fired from) an auto glass shop I worked for over a summer a few years ago (holy shit it might actually have been five years ago... I can't remember). The markups those places charge are ridiculous. Once, two entire 25 foot high shelves of windshields fell over because they hadn't secured them to the wall properly. Probably something like 200 of them were destroyed... but it was only a few thousand dollars to write off. Yet they charge upwards of $400-500 + labour.
Re: New Cars
Was just checking consumer reviews and they weren't good, at all. The few that were cited the car needs continuous care to promote longevity....basically charging the others with abusing their cars...
Re: New Cars
OK, Audi is out.
Just test drove an '06 Mercedes E350 Sedan 6 cyl.
55k miles
$21,500
It was fairly bitchen and put the Audi to shame.
I also loved a '12 Honda Insight (Hybrid)
Brand new and gets over 40 MPG everywhere
I trade safety, comfort, and an engineering marvel for a killer warranty, great mileage and likely certain longevity.
Fuck.

Re: New Cars
Pullin the trigger on the Insight and a bucket for my kiddo.
DONE!!!!
DONE!!!!
Re: New Cars
Actaully bought a Hyundi Elantra Touring.
Most unhip car ever......love it.
Re: New Cars
i've owned three elantras before i got a company vehicle. they really are great cars. i would put a shitload of miles on them and they held up great plus they have a great warranty if something goes wrong. i would get them with real rims and leather so they weren't too unhip.SR wrote:

Re: New Cars
There was a "deluxe" model on the floor with leather, racks, and a sunroof. It was a few grand more, give or take, but I decided against it....due to being cheap mainly. I really am pleased with this car....6 airbags, 5 star crash ratings and a GREAT warranty. I really am pleased for these things and the drive overdelivers as well.creep wrote:i've owned three elantras before i got a company vehicle. they really are great cars. i would put a shitload of miles on them and they held up great plus they have a great warranty if something goes wrong. i would get them with real rims and leather so they weren't too unhip.SR wrote:

Plus, I was in a position to pay cash, so I gave the guy a number I was comfortable with and explained that I wasn't interested in the dance.....so if he could match the number and not so much as a penny more we would have a deal.
Re: New Cars
We got a used Audi Q5 and love it. Had to have a SUV as that is what the other half wanted and we needed something that we could fit the dogs in since we take them everywhere. We got the warranty from the dealer plus we got a decent deal on it, 2010 and it was used for a golf tournie or something in San Antonio.
