2012 will not the end of the world according to Sven Gronemeyer of La Trobe University in Australia
...who says his decoding of a Mayan tablet with a reference to a 2012 date denotes a transition to a new era and not a possible end of the world as others have read it.
He said the inscription describes the return of mysterious Mayan god Bolon Yokte at the end of a 13th period of 400 years, known as Baktuns, on the equivalent of Dec. 21, 2012. Mayans considered 13 a sacred number. There's nothing apocalyptic in the date, he said.

kind of silly to waste time on shit like that isn't it? Nothing's gonna end in 2012, it ends when mankind destroys itself, probably in 100-200 years time

yeah i have read up on this stuff and the ones who actually study the mayan calendars say that the only people who are claiming an end of the world are religious fanatics who are trying to make money. They say that the mayan calendar is actually some sort of 5000+ year cycle, with increments in between based on atronomy that they celebrate. When it comes to the end of a particular point, it just recycles and starts over.

That's an interesting claim. 'Probably' implies some degree of probability, or likelihood, not merely possibility. What do you think the probability is that the human race will be gone within 200 years? 100%? 50%?
