Gentrification.

You can say it's just the inevitable shift of demographics and most of us take a part, and I agree, but that doesn't make it pretty.

The tenement building I live in, for the past 10 years in the same unit, was majority Chinese when I moved in. There was an older white gay guy, who lives next door and has now lived there for 25 years, and a youngish white couple down the hall when I moved in. The rest large extended Chinese families, maybe 5-8 people per 1 bedroom unit, 11 units in total. Generations have lived in the same unit for 40-50-60 years.

Last week one of the last Chinese families were finally evicted (maaaaaybe bought out?). The grandmother was sobbing in the hallway when their final stuff was carted out. In the last 1-2 years six of families have moved (I suspect some evicted, there have been City people crawling about) and young techie white couples or individuals have taken their place. This is in lockstep with the rest of the neighborhood in the last 1-2 years. Half of the (useful) businesses have shuttered; replaced with hip, white bars (if you are looking for 'bros', these are the bars for you!); clothing stores selling single pairs of jeans for $400; to many shitty breakfast 'diners' selling stale eggs and hashbrowns for $15 a plate, lines around the block on sundays; new specialty grocers that make Whole Foods look like Walmart; so many places just flat out demolished, and replaced with towers of tiny condos (600 sf) that start at $1 million.

If you don't make $150k/year and/or are not already here........ forget San Francisco.

Though if you are here already and have some good rent control, you should still be shaking in your boots. Whole buildings have been emptied. If the owner lets it sit for 5 years empty, they can evict everyone, then convert to condos, happening left and right. :balls:

There's a bad smell in my kitchen. That's not a euphemism for anything, btw.

The smell is strongest inside one of my kitchen cupboards. It sort of smells like glue and/or nail polisher remover. I don't know if someone is doing some kind of renovation and the fumes are coming in my place or there is something dead in the wall.

The cupboard is used for glasses and mugs, no food at all. I checked all the shelves in case of droppings or bugs but there is nothing. I checked all the other cupboards, drawers, and under the sink too. There's no forgotten garbage or leaking chemicals, or anything like that. I also took a walk on my floor to see if I can smell anything coming from one o f the other apartments. I also took a walk on the floor below and above, but no smells.
I left a message with the super to come check it out.

:noclue:

If there is absolutely no food products (even spices) in the cupboard I would guess dead rat in the wall, or could be gas leak in the wall, which would be really bad/dangerous. Good that you called the super.

Maybe drill a small hole in the wall in the cupboard where you think the smell is coming from and see if it is worse. Well, if you have cupboard inserts (aren't built-ins) you might have a furred out space behind where something died. Anyways, that would be an easy fix with a patch and would eliminate or confirm something in the wall. If it's in the wall, don't know what to say, might have to be a bigger project and put a real hole in the wall to extract if it's vermin..... :noclue:

I had a terrible smell coming from my cupboard once. I thought it was coming from my sink, so I cleaned that vigourously and religiously did my dishes for a week and that didn't help. Found it to be some old garlic that had gone bad in the cupboard above, reaaally stank!

Bad smell solved!

The super called me back and told me the person below had their bathtub reglazed today and also some other reno work in their kitchen. It's strange I didn't smell anything in the hallway when I walked by the apartment earlier.

Thanks for the suggestions, mockbee. I'm relieved that there isn't anything dead in the wall.

I should've become a locksmith...I locked myself out this morning when I left for a jog. Had been thinking about what I had to do today when I shut the door. I'm glad I have a locksmith as a contact on my phone. He came fast and didn't charge me that much (last year was more expensive because I locked myself out on a Friday night).

Lol I know that pain, we locked ourselves out of our apartment once (actually the first time we left a key on the inside lock and it had turned slightly so we couldn't open it from the outside with the key we did have) and had to call the locksmith, a month later we locked ourselves out again and called the same mob - they gave us a discount of $20 for being repeat customers... hahahah :balls:

I'm afraid that I'm going to have to wear my keys around my neck (too heavy though) or get one of those long chains. But I bet I would still lock myself out  How I miss my nosey next door neighbor, she used to have a copy of my keys and was always at home. Last year I gave another neighbor a copy that mysteriously went missing :conf: (had to change my locks of course).

I have a mantra I recite before passing the door "Keys, phone, wallet, sunnies." and i touch each area that holds each item like i'm an OCD lunatic.. has served me well - apart from that time we got locked out cos i forgot to do it cos I was jibber-jabbering......

my solution is to not have the door lock when you close it. You have to use the key on the deadbolt to lock it so you know for sure you left with your keys. i have never been locked out.

Yeah that's what we do now, and i think that's what we had to do in the place where where we had to call the locksmith... the first instance was odd cos we'd left a key on the inside of the lock and it had somehow turned a little which then basically stopped us from unlocking it from the outside... most annoying....

Anyone who played with lock/key as a kid with the door open... If a key is turning the mechanism inside the door-handle/knob, of course you won't be able to open it, if it's already latched -- it's doing its weird key-thingies to the tumblers inside that make it so the door can't open.

Sigh... No*... This is what happened.... We would leave the key in the lock on the inside of the door and lock the door from the outside. Then successfully unlock the door from the outside (yes with the key still in the lock on the inside) with no issues. One time, when doing the same thing, somehow the key on the inside had moved from the vertical position to slightly on an angle rendering the lock unopenable from the outside (or so the locksmith told us - we never did test it out again, just never left the key in the inside lock when out)... Perhaps when leaving the apartment, one of us brushed the key inside and moved it, or an earthquake caused it to vibrate from vertical to non-vertical, or maybe it was a polterghoost, or a Jedi - actually more likely Sith..... It's not like we actively turned the inside key before leaving FFS.

* I just tested this theory of yours on the brand new lock we had installed on the front door of the place we just bought and it does not apply. I had a key on the inside in various positions and I could lock and unlock the door from the outside... Back under your bridge now matey...

My door doesn't have that optIon. Once you shut the door, it's closed, although not locked, you can’t open it :noclue:
I might have to get a set of only the keys to my door on a string to wear around my neck.

I've had an on/off fever and sore throat/ear infection since Friday so I went to the doctor today and was diagnosed with strep throat. Then the nurse couldn't pump blood out of any of my veins so I have to go back tomorrow just so they can do bloodwork.

I guess the upside is I was able to go to the doctor in the first place. Thanks obamacare! (Sorry LJF)

I supposedly got a cheap deal on a music festival's tickets. They were supposed to be $1649 (pesos) but after taxes I paid $2028. They should be pretty clear about that
edit: ok I checked online, they do, but yesterday it wasn't that specific when I checked on my phone.

I guess I am really more stressed than annoyed. My husband was in the emergency room last week for eight hours because he had severe pain in his abdomen. To make a long story short, he has a hernia. He has a surgical consult tomorrow. On the bright side, the pain has subsided so he is not expecting that he will need surgery.

I should publish an expose' of all that I witnessed in the ER.

My mom had a hernia surgery like 2 or 3 weeks ago. One of her intestines got strangled and she had an emergency surgery. She's fine now, but she confessed to us that she had not been feeling so well since last year. She would lie down and the pain would go away. Hope it's not the case with your husband.

:yikes:

I hope your mom is doing better now.

The CT didn't show anything and they didn't think this was the case for my husband (two surgeons saw him in the ER). He had his appendix removed 30 years ago, and there is scar tissue over where he has pain.

We don't know what to think. My husband met with his primary care doctor the day after his ER visit, and he did not think it was serious. The ER has called twice to follow up; the ER surgeon has called once; the office of the surgeon we are meeting with called to change the appointment from the 15th to tomorrow. The pain has decreased significantly so we are optimistic.

I've posted probably way to much about my wife's experience(s) exactly a year ago where what should have been a fairly simple hernia operation which led to two major surgeries and almost losing her because of complications and fuckups with the first surgery. Her situation was quite different that either of yours, but I did learn a lot talking with surgeons etc while she was in the hospital and apparently one of the more common causes of these kind of problems is scar tissue from previous operations in the area of discomfort, especially hernia ops can really affect a patient's lower bowels over time, causing them to be pushed and compressed or kinked under the scar tissue causing obstructions which can be life-threatening. Upper and/or lower GI endoscopy should be done if it hasn't been already.
