Visiting home
Visiting home
I bought plane tickets today; I'll be spending a couple of weeks this (Southern) summer in the National Park Torres del Paine... 120 km (80 miles), including the Grey Glacier and some other beautiful and slightly extreme locations.
Re: Visiting home
Beautiful!
I look forward to seeing pictures.
So, if it's only a 120km, how long is the flight? 20 minutes?
What sorts of activities will you do there?

Re: Visiting home
The flight is from Santiago to Punta Arenas (3.100 km), takes about 3:30 hours. From Punta Arenas, the bus ride to the national park takes about 4 hours. The 120 km distance I mentioned is the total trekking trip... that's what takes around 10 daysArtemis wrote:Beautiful!

Activities will be, basically, walking, being amazed by nature and thinking...
But, let's see...
The first day, I'll go to the Torres viewpoint...
Around day 5 or 6 I should reach the El Paso camp, which is right next to a huge Glacier.
On day 7 or 8, and depending on the weather, I might be able to trek ON the Grey Glacier...
As I draw closer to the end of my expedition, I might travel through the Pehoé Lake...
Finally, I expect to spend a day or two in Punta Arenas
Re: Visiting home
Pretty sweet man, have a blast!
Re: Visiting home
Thank you, thank you
A little more than 3 months to go, yet... I'll spend New Year's in the park, actually

I guess I misunderstood your original post. I thought it was only 120km from Santiago. That's why it seemed funny to me that you would fly such a short distance. Anyway, your trip sounds and looks amazing.Larry B. wrote:The flight is from Santiago to Punta Arenas (3.100 km), takes about 3:30 hours. Re: Visiting home
Sounds like a great trip Larry, enjoy!
Re: Visiting home
Beautiful country Larry. I've only been to Ecuador so far in South America. I'm really interested in exploring a lot more of the continent.

There are plenty of beautiful places in South America... the Amazonas, the Chilean and Argentinian Patagonia, rainforest in Bolivia, Macchu Picchu in Peru, great tropical paradise in Isla Margarita (Venezuelan), Easter Island (Chile), cool mountains to climb throughout Chile and Argentina, and so on...
You're all welcome to visit, by the way...
Re: Visiting home
Here's a nice article of a cruise that travels through some of the areas I'll be visiting 10 days from now.

The passengers were a cosmopolitan mix and we were divided into language groups before enjoying a superb dinner of Chilean wine, steak and Austral hake – fresh from the cool waters we would soon be navigating.
When we awoke, we were enclosed in mist and hugging the dramatic outline of the main island in Tierra del Fuego’s archipelago as we cruised towards Ainsworth Bay. Tierra del Fuego, meaning ‘land of fire’, was originally named by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1520 when he saw wisps from natives’ camp fires.
Some 800 ships have been wrecked there – we were about to round the Horn ourselves and our guide joked: ‘Let’s not make it 801.’
Travel Facts
Cruceros Australis offers three and four-day cruises from £725pp between Punta Arenas and Ushuaia. They run between September and April aboard two vessels, Via Australis, with a capacity of 136, and Stella Australis, with 210.
Cruises are all-inclusive and feature daily inland tours to see glaciers, trek through forests and observe wildlife. www.australis.com

Are you going on a group expedition or just on your own?
Re: Visiting home
On my own, all alone :cona:Artemis wrote:Are you going on a group expedition or just on your own?
Nah, this is how I've always wanted this specific trip to be... just me, spending New Year's there, going at my own pace and being responsible only for myself. Plus, of course, all the thinking that needs to be done

Which one is your house?Larry B. wrote:

Those might be photoshopped in, showing what the development a specific project would look like. I've never known of the existence of such structures inside the Park.
This will be my house:

Re: Visiting home
Tonight's last supper: sushi. I've just walked my date home and now I'll have some sushi, apple juice and will probably watch Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It's 9:50 PM here, a transfer will pick my up at 4 AM. Apparently, very strong winds are expected tomorrow, maybe reaching 100 km/h (67 mph). So, I might die.
I'm pretty stoked. I might cry when I get there. If I don't die before, of course.

Re: Visiting home
Apple juice+ sushi?
If this is possibly your last supper ever, you should at least have a beer.
Anyway, have a good time on your trip. I look forward to seeing the pics when you get back.
Buen viaje!

Re: Visiting home
Muchas gracias :)
It's 11 PM and the sushi hasn't arrived yet, so my last supper could very well be just apple juice. (aside from that great cookie I'll get on the airplane.)

I actually do hope Larry is okay, but ... now I kinda wonder if he didn't start the fire himself and try to pin the blame on that Jewish guy.
