Shit, whatever happened to Pagemaker? I used to use that at Uni in '92. I guess InDesign is the equivalent now. CS6 has come a long way in 20 years.

Re: 1989 computer ad
One thing that is interesting about that ad is the really high price of the computer, compared to the cost of computers today.
Computers and most consumer electronics are one of the few products that have significantly deflated in price over the past 30 years.

Re: 1989 computer ad
The cost of the parts has come way down. RAM and HDs used to be incredibly expensive, but I guess the metals and stuff have become cheaper as countries have sought ought more mines for them and ramped up production. A large part of the cost of a current computer is also still the Windows license.Lokus wrote:One thing that is interesting about that ad is the really high price of the computer, compared to the cost of computers today.

They have also become way more popular, leading to economies of scale and competition which has driven down costs.Adurentibus Spina wrote:The cost of the parts has come way down. That calendar page says Wednesday July 17.LJF wrote:I call bullshit, the calendar next to you says July 12 2012Pandemonium wrote:My first Mac around 1990. I think I was just learning the fine art of photo retouching w/Photoshop 1.0 here:
July 17 2012 was a Tuesday.
Interestingly, July 17 1990 was also a Tuesday. July 17 1989 was a Monday. But July 17 1991 was a Wednesday. So if that actually is TB, it's from '91.
Re: 1989 computer ad
Also, the high price didn't include the monitor or the mouse!Lokus wrote:One thing that is interesting about that ad is the really high price of the computer, compared to the cost of computers today.

Re: 1989 computer ad
I can't believe that price, it seems completely ridiculous. What would that be in today's money? 20000 or something? And it's not even a mac!Artemis wrote:Also, the high price didn't include the monitor or the mouse!Lokus wrote:One thing that is interesting about that ad is the really high price of the computer, compared to the cost of computers today.

According to one inflation-calculator: http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/Matz wrote:I can't believe that price, it seems completely ridiculous. $8,499 in 1989 = same purchasing power as $15,790.25 in 2012.
Which really shows you just how much cheaper computers are today.
Re: 1989 computer ad
yeah, exactly. Imagine spending 15000 on a computer today! What monster you would be able to get
Re: 1989 computer ad
You can price out such beasts on the Apple website. They're pretty killer.Matz wrote:yeah, exactly. Imagine spending 15000 on a computer today! What monster you would be able to get
Here's the most maxed out thing you can get, as far as I can tell:
For $16,797.92. (You could get the computer itself without the monitors/software/printer for just under $14,000 which is actually kind of impressive.)
