i just read up on westvleteren since i never heard of it. i wish i would have done it earlier to get one of the six packs they released here a few months ago. they sold for $85 but are now going for about $400 a six pack. that shit better be good.Mescal wrote:Well, like I said, this is very, very similar to Westvleteren. So, you just had the best beer in the world
I think it's meh.creep wrote:i just read up on westvleteren since i never heard of it. i wish i would have done it earlier to get one of the six packs they released here a few months ago. they sold for $85 but are now going for about $400 a six pack. that shit better be good.Mescal wrote:Well, like I said, this is very, very similar to Westvleteren. It's ok, and a very rich flavour, but there are a lot of beers that are much better and that are way easier to get.
If Westvleteren would be available in every bar in Belgium, I would probably never order one.
And like I said, if you want to taste what a Westvleteren is like, try the Sint Bernardus abt 12. It's the same beer.
maybe try one of the beers on the lower half of that section: affligem, chimay, maredsous, leffe or westmalle for instance. those are very common, and very good.creep wrote:ok i drank it. i didn't love it. it has a weird after taste.
Djees, drink it alreadyArtemis wrote:
Well, I would say the Rochefort 8, but it's also a dark beer.creep wrote:i went to the fancy beer shop today and was going to buy a six pack of the sint bernardus but they were $6 each! i bought one and will give a report later.Mescal wrote:I think it's meh.creep wrote:i just read up on westvleteren since i never heard of it. i wish i would have done it earlier to get one of the six packs they released here a few months ago. they sold for $85 but are now going for about $400 a six pack. that shit better be good.Mescal wrote:Well, like I said, this is very, very similar to Westvleteren. they had a nice selection of belguim beer. i remember growing up with a belguim kid. he would take off his thick glasses and his eyes would go crosseyed. he also thought babies were born out of the butt. his dad had a film projector and old porno films. we would fire up the projector and watch them.
here is a fuzzy picture of the belguim beers. what do i try next?
That's the whole pointcreep wrote: it has a weird after taste.

well... if you're on a craft beer journey, look a little closer to home.creep wrote:i went to the fancy beer shop today and was going to buy a six pack of the sint bernardus but they were $6 each! i bought one and will give a report later.Mescal wrote:I think it's meh.creep wrote:i just read up on westvleteren since i never heard of it. i wish i would have done it earlier to get one of the six packs they released here a few months ago. they sold for $85 but are now going for about $400 a six pack. that shit better be good.Mescal wrote:Well, like I said, this is very, very similar to Westvleteren. I am a Chenin Blanc fan.SR wrote:And since this thread has evolved, I had a sparkling Vouvray the other night. I am a HUGE fan of the appellation, and think Chenin Blanc is ignorantly dismissed by a herd that follows hipness in wine. It was amazing....tons of apricot on the nose, perfect balance between acid, alc, and brix.....tantilizing effervescence, but not aggressive and medium finish that worked well with foods. We had apps such as dumplings in red curry, brasied frisee with pig collar, and seared scallops with gorgonzola.![]()
For those familair with the appellation, do not expect a viscous off dry style wine like so many other non gaseous sorts from there.
Hahaha, last week I revisited this thread to see what could we improve for this year's... and yes, I'd be up for organizing and drawing the names againArtemis wrote:I know it's a little early but maybe we should start thinking about Secret Santa 2.
Larry did such a fine job of organizing and drawing the names last year, I nominate him again this year.

It's not too early, the more the merrier! And I have to send this one early because I'm not going to be home for the holidaysArtemis wrote:I know it's a little early but maybe we should start thinking about Secret Santa 2.
