Well, like I said, this is very, very similar to Westvleteren. So, you just had the best beer in the world

I think it's meh.

It's ok, and a very rich flavour, but there are a lot of beers that are much better and that are way easier to get.

If Westvleteren would be available in every bar in Belgium, I would probably never order one.

And like I said, if you want to taste what a Westvleteren is like, try the Sint Bernardus abt 12. It's the same beer.

i went to the fancy beer shop today and was going to buy a six pack of the sint bernardus but they were $6 each! i bought one and will give a report later.

they had a nice selection of belguim beer. i remember growing up with a belguim kid. he would take off his thick glasses and his eyes would go crosseyed. he also thought babies were born out of the butt. his dad had a film projector and old porno films. we would fire up the projector and watch them.

here is a fuzzy picture of the belguim beers. what do i try next?

maybe try one of the beers on the lower half of that section: affligem, chimay, maredsous, leffe or westmalle for instance. those are very common, and very good.

Well, I would say the Rochefort 8, but it's also a dark beer.

So don't know if you should get it if you didn't like the St Bernardus.

But it also has a very rich flavour. If you drink two, you get the perfect beer buzz.

If I'm not mistaken that's a Malheur at the top. That's also a nice beer.

Like Krakle said, Chimay is very popular, so you could try that. I for one don't really like though.

Leffe is a strange one. I like em very much (the blonde, the Triple and the 9°). But beer purists hate it. Cause it is mass produced and contains lots of sugar thus making it have a flat taste, so almost anyone could like it. So it has no 'character' as opposed to the 'real' beers. (if that makes sense)

well... if you're on a craft beer journey, look a little closer to home.

westys are only the best beer in the world on ratebeer. on beeradvocate it's pliny the younger.

you're in northern california. and it's feb.

pliny the younger is brewed once a year by russian river and only released in VERY limited numbers in feb. it's only available in draft. i don't think there's anyway you could be disappointed by it.

if you can't find it though try to find pliny the elder. it's available bottled and draft, released year round (still difficult to get), and is like 3rd or 4th best beer in the world (if you go by beer advocate) and like top 20 if you go by ratebeer.

Pliny the Elder is the best beer I have ever had. I had it before the release of Younger and then it was the "best" beer in the world. Aware of that hype, it still blew mah mind.

Haven't hadd the Younger, though I thought RRBC was going to bottle it.

And since this thread has evolved, I had a sparkling Vouvray the other night. I am a HUGE fan of the appellation, and think Chenin Blanc is ignorantly dismissed by a herd that follows hipness in wine. It was amazing....tons of apricot on the nose, perfect balance between acid, alc, and brix.....tantilizing effervescence, but not aggressive and medium finish that worked well with foods. We had apps such as dumplings in red curry, brasied frisee with pig collar, and seared scallops with gorgonzola.

For those familair with the appellation, do not expect a viscous off dry style wine like so many other non gaseous sorts from there.

I think an Albariño would have paired well with the apps you had too. Especially the scallops and goronzola.

You are a retauranteurs dream....I almost didn't include the scallop dish because it was the worst gastronomic pair. Yes on yours, as would a Sancerre or white Bordeaux.

I know it's a little early but maybe we should start thinking about Secret Santa 2.

Larry did such a fine job of organizing and drawing the names last year, I nominate him again this year. :tiphat:

Hahaha, last week I revisited this thread to see what could we improve for this year's... and yes, I'd be up for organizing and drawing the names again

So if people wants to start popping in now, please do!
