Heart-Melting Viral Picture of a Dying Dog in Lap of His Owner Will Make You Cry
AUGUST 10, 2012 1:36 PM

Friendship, love and care are amazing human behaviors those create a great impact on others, even animals lose their heart with a little bit care and adore. He saved the life of a cute puppy about 19 years ago, since then he and Schoep were true friends. They spent thousands of precious moments of life in the company of each other. They shared thousands of grieves and pleasures sitting side by side. They were friends, not the friends of green weathers only ….they were true friends who live altogether from cradle to grave. When Schoep was dying, he grabbed him in his lap in the cold waters of a lake and tried his best to ease the pain of his dying arthritic dog….his friend captured these heart-melting moments, the pictured appeared on the net and became a viral in a few hours because anybody who saw this picture couldn’t resist to hide his feelings and just cried with tremendous sagacity one feels on losing a friend.

When Schoep was dying, his heart would be truly filled with the feelings of gratitude and he would be thinking only dogs are not loyal to their owners, some dog owners also know the meanings of true friendship.

The story began when John Unger shared this picture of his 19 years old dying dog on his Facebook page in which he was trying to ease the pain of his arthritis dog in his lap in the waters of a lake. The picture soon got fire and shared by every person who first saw it. Thus the picture of a dying dog became viral on internet in no times.

The picture was actually taken Unger’s good friend Hannah Stonehouse Hudson, who is a professional photographer, and responsible of capturing this quite impressive moment between the man and his dying rescue dog.

My pups have added immeasurable quality to my life, and I to theirs. I wish I were half the man they think I am.

Sweet photo.

Yeah that is a very sad but nice story. I know when my dogs pass on it will be hard on me, I do not go anywhere without them basically so it will be strange when that day comes and I too wish I was half of who my dogs see me as.

I took my 10.5 y.o. lab/mastiff mix to the Puget Sound the other day. He has a hard time walking sometimes and I thought he might like being in the water, which he used to love. His legs gave out and he couldn't swim. I had to go in after him. You can believe I was crying about that. He looked so pathetic.

I have a question about the article. It reads as if written by the same people who send scam emails from Africa. It's so poorly written that it's odd.

Sorry on the pup....I am sure there are other quality parts to his life. I thought the same thing on the writing, but I simply thought it was a simpleton trying to be eloquent without the locution to do so.

It is some random blog. I posted the text since it is from the site where I got the photo.

The Chicago Tribune posted a brief audio of an interview with the dog's owner, John Unger:

Thats a great pic and story. It's incredible what animals, pets specifically can bring to our lives.

Yes it is...I've had great pets. Never have been able to separate them as animals, I always feel they're like family to me.

Viral photo helps 19-year-old arthritic dog recover
By Dylan Stableford, Yahoo! News | The Sideshow – 7 hrs ago

A photograph of a man wading in Lake Superior with his 19-year-old arthritic dog captured the hearts of millions when it was posted online last month--an outpouring that inspired the dog's owner to launch a foundation to help low-income families care for their aging canines.

John Unger says Schoep's Legacy Foundation has raised more than $25,000 since Unger and his dog, Schoep, were photographed by a friend, who posted the image to Facebook.

Before the photo was taken, Unger and his veterinarian had been considering putting Schoep down.
"Without treatment, John and I were talking about euthanasia at the end of July," Erik Haukass, the vet, told the Daily Mail. But through the unsolicited donations from people who saw the photo, Unger was able to treat Schoep and extend his life.
"Schoep is doing incredible right now," Unger said. 'The therapies that the people have donated--it's like turning back the clock a year and a half."

The foundation was created, Haukass added, when the pair "realized we had received more money than we would reasonably spend on Schoep's care."

"It could help another 30 or 40 Schoeps," Haukass said.

The "Official Fan Page of Schoep and John" has more than 20,000 "likes," and Hudson has been selling prints of the photo to benefit the cause.

"This 19-year-old [Schoep is] being cradled in his father's arms last night in Lake Superior," Hannah Stonehouse Hudson, the photographer, wrote in the Facebook post that sparked the outpouring. "Schoep falls asleep every night when he is carried into the lake. The buoyancy of the water soothes his arthritic bones. Lake Superior is very warm right now, so the temperature of the water is perfect. I was so happy I got to capture this moment for John. By the way, John rescued Schoep as an 8-month-old puppy, and he's been by his side through many adventures."

Hudson, a professional photographer, told the Pioneer Press that business is booming since the photo of Unger and Schoep was published--so much so that she recently hired her first employee plus an intern.

"I would say a 30 percent increase in shoots," Hudson said. "Who knew a favor to a friend would turn into this? It's completely surreal."

Because of the public's generosity, Schoep has been getting expensive joint laser treatments to reduce pain and swelling related to arthritis.

"He's walking so much faster," the 49-year-old Unger said. "It's unbelievable."
