Mastodon / Jane's Addiction / Dillinger / Volta Supergroup Has a Name

New dream-team supergroup to be called Giraffe Tongue Orchestra - and they're already writing!

By Johnny FirecloudNovember 11, 20113
While many if not most of us were over the term 'supergroup' before it really became the musical fad, a few all-star collaborations have yielded some incredible results. For every Metallica/Lou Reed debacle, there's a Them Crooked Vultures pickin' up the slack and obliterating expectations.

The same will likely be the case for another recently announced supergroup, consisting of Mastodon guitarist-vocalist Brent Hinds, the Dillinger Escape Plan guitarist Ben Weinman, former The Mars Volta drummer Thomas Pridgen and ex–Jane’s Addiction bassist Eric Avery. They're called Giraffe Tongue Orchestra, and though we haven't heard a note yet, we're excited as hell.

Even better: the band has already written new material. Weinman revealed the new band's moniker in a blog post on Dillinger's website. The six-stringer also mentioned that he and Hinds have been putting off days on the current tour featuring Mastodon and the Dillinger Escape Plan to good use.

“So about G.T.O (Giraffe Tongue Orchestra), Brent and I have already got new material,” Weinman says. “The guy just spits out riffs like a riff machine. Day off tomorrow in Colorado and we shall be working all day on sweet sweet melodies sure to make the young girls cry and the old ones scream (not necessarily in that order).”

We'll keep you posted on sounds as they develop. In the meantime, the metal/hard rock world has a new reason to get excited, and for once it's not about a bunch of old men reuniting to play old material.

Bad name, looking forward to listening

The GTO thing is too easily modified into GTFO, which wouldn't be good if their material is poor. Plus, "giraffe"? In a band's name? Polar Bear is cool, Panda Bear is nice, Cat Stevens is mildly lame, Snoop Dogg is great, but Giraffe?

Who knows, they might actually be good :bday:

I like the name. Giraffe tongues are strange.

Can't wait to hear this. I wish it wsn't a side project for some of the members. I'd love to see Avery do something that we knew would be a full time band, especially if it's good and worth being excited about.

I like the name. Giraffes are cool and weird.

I'd be curious to check this band out.

Not for the type of fan that would care about this band. Not at all.

i'm probably one of the few that has no interest in eric side projects as a bass player in a band. i'm only slightly interested in his solo stuff but i would prefer to hear that.

also...i'm on the dumb name side. :thumb:

Wouldn't this be his main project? And you have no interest in hearing Avery play bass in what could be a great band? I'm more interested in this than TGEA. A hard rock album with great musicians featuring Avery on bass? That hasn't happened since Decon? I wouldn't consider Polar Bear hard rock.

I'll pretty much follow any project Thomas Pridgen is working on.

Don't know..i was mostly disappointed by all so-called supergroups that came up the last years. Even if i love some of the members i.e. Josh in Them Crooked Vultures - that band does nothing for me.
I have my hopes up for this project. But will it really be a band or just a one time project :noclue:

I loved Brent Hinds side band stuff he put out earlier this year and if this is anything like that it should be cool because it will be different from Mastadon but still interesting.

Let me rephrase that; we already talked about this extensively at xiola. This is some Twilight Zone shit if you guys don't remember. We went on and on about Brent Hinds' checkered past and all of that. The only reason I know who Brent Hinds is, is because we discussed this at xiola.

Yeah, the band was talked about, but that was before they had a name or any music written.

I'm not too big into Mastodon. I like Thomas Pridgen and really like the only two Dillinger Escape Plan CD's I own. I can't wait to check this out.
