New Podcast Interview w/ Stephen

#1 Post by someguy » Tue Mar 07, 2023 6:08 pm

3 Is the Magic Number Podcast- talks about new music at 46:20. I’m getting the sense he found out Eric was back in the band the day they started writing, but maybe I’m reading into it.

I guess there was never any real grand plan. This thing is developing day by day. Pretty interesting.

Interesting to hear him talk about the unusual structure of "Then She Did..."

I hope Perk can come up with rhythms that sound good without any backing like Chip Away does.
If I could produce a JA track I'd see if Perk could pick up where Chip Away left off. Add some slappy bass lines to that style; with guitar as the "backing" not the focus. There would be parts with drums, bass and vocals only. There would be parts of the song with Perk's tribal drums and nothing else. Guitar parts would come in and out depending on the mood. And I'd ask Perry to pick up where Chip Away left off with that kind of vocal.

I liked Perk's drum tuning and the different percussive pieces he used on Kettle Whistle live 2001.

The more recent versions of Kettle his drum tuning is lower and plays it differently.
The way he played it in 2001 is more tribal than now. The worldexotic intro is missing from recent versions.

That's what I always felt was part of the problem. With no plan none of the band members knew when to take each others commitment seriously. Especially with Perry. I feel like Eric has always been hesitant knowing that Perry might flake out or disappear at any time.

Perkins drum logo on this tour looks like a copy of an Aerosmith logo. That logo doesn't give me any hope Perkins will play anything but 2.0 style JA on the new songs-Perkins may be the weak link. I used to think PF was the weak link but I think Perry is sounding more 1.0 now and in 2022 than recent years and they're playing a lot of the songs they used to leave off like Trip Away thanks to Perry.

More likely thanks to Eric seeing as he considers himself a champion of the 1.0 days.

I agree Perkins has a lot to prove. Hopefully playing the old P4P songs has reminded him of how he used to play.

The drumming on TGEA is almost exclusively boring and generic.

This. Perkins probably thinks TGEA is the best thing he ever did.

This clip has 2011 Perkins playing good rhythm for JA when he wants to. If this had been on TGEA like it was supposed to, with the other 2 montage outake clips from 2011 I'd like TGEA, but it wasnt. Who took this out Perry

In the montage vid in the previous post I liked how there was tape reel running in the studio, it was b&w and Perry had on a P. Murphy style suit dancing around in the studio clearly into the music they were making. From the preview it sounded like they were going to deliver a Bobhaus-Addiction but what they delivered on record wasn't that, no way. What we got from 2.0 was Bonos-Addiction, TheBoringEscapeArtist.

This was also a good example of what Dave can do. He can create his own wall of sound.

I agree that is. Dave can play stuff like that when he's asked to but has to have someone there with him asking him to play that way. Left on his own he doesnt, he does Panic Channel stuff.
