JA March 2023 Tour Thread

#1 Post by thoreau » Wed Mar 01, 2023 12:02 pm

Just starting up a new thread for this month's tour to keep it all together -- reviews, updates, discussions why Dave is great/not great, etc.

Nice, ESY. Hope the clan has a great time together.

As for Casey, I think she did, then she moved to Joshua Tree?

I'm on the fence about doing the Hollywood Palladium show. GA resale tickets have stayed around $90 and I'd like to also see LA Witches. Like most shows, a game time decision.

Perry hinted the song "Imminent Redemption" will be making its live debut on this tour, but I guess we'll see.

Near the beginning of this new interview Perry mentions they'll be playing a "little bit of new music, and of course great songs of the past", and then name-checks "Imminent Redemption" as "the song that we have been speaking of" a few minutes later when talking generally about lyrics. Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions, but sounds like that one's ready to go.

That would be cool. It’s been over 20 years since these guys played a new song before it was released.

This interview seems to simultaneously answer the big question while muddying the waters further

So if Dave is recording, why are Josh and Troy involved (presuming they are the friends Stephen is referring to)?

Also wild the three of them did an interview together- still surreal to see Eric fully integrated

I was positively giddy watching that.

Like if they play a new song this weekend — it’ll be avilable within a hour or less online in some snippet

That’s is so exciting.

My guess is IF Dave is working with them — it’s not enough for a full album, or maybe the vibes is just — we’ll take whatever you can give us and when you can’t we have a Josh to play around with

This is awesome

And surreal

Thanks for sharing that interview! The fact they're still feeling the way they do about each other AFTER riding that massive positive wave they caught on the last tour speaks volumes to me.

Also, the fact that the three of them are saying the music is effortless and flowing? Goosebumps. Guess we'll get a taste of what current Jane's sounds like on Sunday.

I did not get the sense that Dave is definitely involved or recording with them yet? It reads to me like they still want him there and will always include him until he explicitly says otherwise.

Man, that interview put a huge smile on my face. Even if we didn't get any new material, the fact that they've rekindled with each other this much is so heartwarming.

This is great.

I particularly liked the part where Stephen said ... basically - "for the first time since the original line up wrote music together and now we're back writing, I've improved as a musician suddenly, and we're not writing music from just the waste down anymore (without Eric) but from the waste up and really thinking about it again" That's just super cool and inspiring to hear honestly!! I would definitely associate Strays as being 'from the waste down' kinda music

Hope they play a new track Sunday as stated... and if they do.. is Josh going to be playing the guitar part Dave composted or.... ? :noclue:

Exciting to hear about new music and they definitely seem like genuine friends, which is great to see.

That said, "Imminent Redemption" sounds more Kind Heaven than Jane's Addiction... We'll see!

I also didn't take from this that Dave is definitely part of recording. I think Steve could have just name-checked him out of respect/friendship.

I agree “Imminent Return” has Kind Heaven vibes…

But I have to trust Eric. Gotta believe he’s helping curb or shape or morph whatever is being written.

I’m giddy

I'm very sceptical that they can produce new music that's in the same spirit (never mind quality) as the 1.0 material, given the wildly different circumstances that any new music is being created in. New songs could be respectable but could they be great? I doubt it but would be delighted to be proven wrong!

I feel like Porno for Pyros has a better chance because the bar isn't quite as high (in my eyes) and the hippy-surfer-kooky vibe is still present in Perry and Pete, so any new music has a better chance of feeling consistent in tone with the older stuff.

Jane's 1.0 had more of a freak-junkie-bizarro vibe that Perry doesn't channel as much these days, especially in his songwriting.

It's going to be interesting...

I’m not expecting the same spirit or quality at all. And yet, I’m optimistic. I’m optimistic because I think Eric and Perry and Perk together can make some magic. I think the last tour was a great example. It was different, but there was still something there they were tapping in to.

The brotherhood seems to be back, and with it trust and love. I expect the new music to reflect that so I am optimistic.

I think anyone would be disappointed with what we hear on Sunday if they're expecting the guys to pick up right where 1.0 left off. So much has changed since then, and while the title might have some Kind Heaven-ish vibes to them, I don't really want to hear Perry try to tap back into drugs and orgy at this stage in his life. I think it would be a bit cringey.

The Optimistic Shaman direction sounds like a good direction from what he described in the interview and is true to his current perspective.

What’s really exciting is that it sounds like they have more than 3 songs now, and that we’re trending toward a full album. I really hope they scrap any guitar tracks from other people and just use Dave

I like the title imminent redemption- “imminent” seems like an Eric word to me. Two sort of interesting words put together
