Well i'm one of the few believers that Dave is having health issues with the long covid. It's one thing to compare going on tour with painting street signs or whatever he does.

I did forget about that. It's something I think about from time to time, how people like Perry can just decide to quit the hard stuff and never look back.

I’m not sure this is the great example you think it is. I’d have never picked this out as anything noteworthy or even something identifiable as being Dave.

I’m not sure this is the great example you think it is. I’d have never picked this out as anything noteworthy or even something identifiable as being Dave.
I think Dave's guitar sound, note choice, background layers of effects combined to set the mood well on that example. Your right it doesn't sound like Dave's typical guitar style. He got away from the 2.0 "Another soulmate" stuff for a minute and brought in some needed atmosphere that he's been missing. That's why I'm rating this example. Wish he could explore this direction more but it's not likely he will since it was cut from TGEA.

Dave’s fiancé has just posted “90” days on the gram. I think that means 90 days sober, and hopefully it goes for the both of them.

He did a promotional thing for Ernie Ball where he says he plays Ernie Ball strings and they flash up an image of a pack of nines and a pack of tens. So maybe he plays both? I’ve no idea if that counts as a definitive answer though - he doesn’t seem to actually mention what gauge he plays, they may have just used a stock image.

I kind of recall an episode of Dark Matter in which this question was asked, and Dave basically said "I don't know, ask Dan (Cleary) what I currently play."
So ask Dan.
Also, I don't know it tuning affects what gauge is used (not a guitar player), but Dan also made a joke about how one day, without anyone asking, he just decided he wasn't tuning Dave's guitar down a half step anymore, that Perry was just going to have to hit the original notes. And he did.

The 9 and 10 gauge refer to the high E string which is the bottom string…the low E string on the top and is usually the heaviest string. The lower the number the thinner the string and heavier strings tend to get a heavier sound but they tend to require more force to play. The school of thinking is the heaviest players use heavier strings but they can vary…if he said he played 11s I’d be shocked…the difference is definitely noticeable on the top strings…usually lighter gauge strings can help with leads and soloing, but 9 and 10 are close. I’m curious now if the 9 means his low E is a 42 and 10 means his low E is a 46…they make a lot of different variations now…sorry for the guitar geek out lol…damn now I’m wondering what gauge picks he uses
But simply the guys in Metallica probably play 10s or 11s but for a player like Dave 9s or lighter strings seem to make sense…heavy music heavy strings

I play heavy bottoms 10-56, so there's lots of variety out there. Hell , I have a guitar with a bass string on it.

Thanks everyone. I raised the question because I was fucking around with "Just Because" with 10's and realized the one bend in the main riff you have to pull off with one finger is actually pretty difficult to execute, so it made me suspect he may use 9's for that song at least.
I may throw a pair of 9's on and just see how all the JA songs I know how to play feels with them.
