See, I’ll take Cook the Rice over Price I Pay. Price I Pay is a better song on paper, but Cook the Rice still feels more like early 90s Perry. He’s still just weird and singing about life instead of trying to write a hit rock song. It just feels more…authentic.
I’m totally with you, as far as the principle goes. But for me, “Cook the Rice” is a silly/goofy toss off. If you were comparing something authentic, yet unconventional like “Porpoise Head” to “Price I Pay”, I’d be in full agreement.

been caught stealing has a toss off vibe .. prolly if we only heard a live acoustic version it would sound even goofier .. love me some cook the rice .. price i pay doesn't do it for me .. hoping with martyn in the band we are gonna get some stooges funk goth punk style and not so much the acoustic island music vibe .. pretty sure pete is hungry to put another stamp on perrys high profile gig so if perrry lets pete and martyn rip it up its gonna be some good shit

Lyrically, “Been Caught Stealing” has way more subtext or social commentary than “Cook the Rice”. I think the latter is probably literally about cooking rice.

As for the music, Eric is right in the pocket with his groovy bassline. And Dave’s sloppy guitar solo shreds like a monster. The isolated percussion track is easily recognizable to anyone who grew up in the 90s; actually, I’d say that about the isolated bass and guitar tracks too. On the surface, the song seems like a tossed off novelty (that’s by design) but it’s a masterpiece. Yes, it’s been played to death on radio and is one of the band’s only “hits”…but when revisited after a long time with fresh ears, it’s self evident why the song became an iconic alternative rock staple.

“Cool the Rice” seems like something they jammed out in a dressing room an hour before performing it live.

I always thought been caught sounded like an attempt at a spin doctors tune .. not sure the lyrics are that deep but it had a great video .. should we blame been caught for the break up of janes since its success was a deterrent to perrys underground vision? .. i would say pets has more social commentary than stealing .. i also cook a lot of rice and i don't really shoplift .. :noclue: .. perhaps we can agree that price i pay is quite an about face from his been caught stealing attitude .. HA! he payin for everything now .. of course etty is dangerous she makes me pay for both of us .. like slappin yrself in the face...

Agua live acoustic sounds like a b-side from GGU.
I think if Porno had stayed together for their GGU follow up would have sounded like it a harder edge Gobalee. More focus on Perkins drums and Martyn/Watt's bass and Pete's guitar as the part that Gobalee was missing. Perry might have some unused tracks saved from that period. Karl Leiker from Gobalee isn't talked about much on this board but I liked his bass and stage performance as much or more than any of the bass players Perry's worked with.

I always though "Cook The Rice" was inspired by the Chinese proverb "Talk doesn't cook rice" :dunce:

Weirdly … I’m digging the ramshackle nature of these performances

Perry kind of directing the songs at points.

Hope a full recording shows up
That's what I liked about it too. It was jagged, like anything could happen unplanned. I liked to see Perry clearly was the one directing the show. Would like to see what might happen if porno ever tried to tour again, would it be as loose as the first Porno reunion gig.
