Read an interview in RS a few days ago where Chad was asked bout them playing Aeroplane on this tour, funny....he referred to this as the album stepchild, but Josh was good with the parts and seemingly wanted to play them.Matz wrote:not much love for this one it'd be 3rd on my list if I were to partake

it doesn't make much sense for Chad to say that cause it's one of their best albums, it has stood the test of time, so many great songs on it and the style and vibe is unique. It really is Jane's meets RHCP in their prime, what's not to love about that?! It completely blows Decon out of the water imo
BUT...my guess is that Anthony and Flea when they reflect connect the album with the fucked up things that happened at the time, John leaving, River Phoenix dying, Anthony relapsing every five minutes, their objectivity is gone.

I adore One Hot Minute it's easily their 2nd best after BSSM
Re: Porno For Pyros GGU Getting New Vinyl Reissue
It's so funny to me how such fierce regard is held for this album on a board that almost universally has disdain for the peppers.
AK is the Obama of R&R here. It's just his fault no matter what. Chad might think it's the stepchild for reasons other that what you all might think he thinks it for. I don't know the inner workings of the band, but Chad seems to me to be the one closest to objectivity as he was the one who lobbied so hard for DN in the first place.
I was biased against OHM for a really, really long time until I saw the love for it here and went back to it. It's a really good album, but as a long time fan of the band, it still doesn't resonate thematically with the bands musical/artistic history. It is an oddball, which in terms of R$R is a good thing I suppose. The altered or depressed state of mind that AK suffered through was real. SO was DN's I presume. If, and I mean IF AK looks back with negativity regarding the album, or the section of his life, or his behavior, or whatever and decides to put it in a box and set it aside ..... so fucking what? He addressed those demons and came out the victor.....

I think the "universal disdain" for the peppers is a modern day thing...much like our current janes disdain....they both suck now...but I think most liked the peppers at some point...I think the album is a big hit for Dave's fans who became pepper fans because of him...it's not a definitive peppers album though...even they don't think so thus they don't play it...they do play plenty of songs about hard times for Anthony so not buying your view on Anthony's growth being the cause for not playing it...Dave caused a slight directional change that they didn't care for in retrospect...they have a huge catalog that affordable them the luxury of passing on playing it so they do..
I like the album for what it was...I liked the relapse tour for what it was with flea...Jane's with flea! Rhcp with Dave! But it wasn't really janes or rhcp with either in there...imho and thus it is not near the top of the mountain of peppers albums for me

I think OHM is the best thing the RHCP have ever done. Anthony finally got out of the frat boy party animal and stupid rhyming phase of his career for a few shining moments and showed everyone he could write real lyrics.
Then John came back and he went right back to silliness.
It was experimental, it rocked harder than anything they had done before while also showing a more melodic side they had never shown before (both thanks to Dave) and the band was just fucked up enough for it all to be interesting. I see it as their peak.
Then Anthony got clean and Dave left and they became the happy sunshine fun time band. Fuck them from By The Way and beyond.

Two interesting remarks here....first that DN fans were introduced to the Chilis through him. That concept wasn't even in my orbit of possibility. As you know, and might even agree, the RHCP were part of a church of youth rebellion and edginess here in LA well before Jane's was glimmer in the city's eye.....an LA staple even before they hit college radio hard nationally. The idea that DN's arrival was anyone's entrée into the band in the early mid 90's is shocking to me, but certainly possible.kv wrote:I think the "universal disdain" for the peppers is a modern day thing...much like our current janes disdain....they both suck now...but I think most liked the peppers at some point...I think the album is a big hit for Dave's fans who became pepper fans because of him...it's not a definitive peppers album though...even they don't think so thus they don't play it...they do play plenty of songs about hard times for Anthony so not buying your view on Anthony's growth being the cause for not playing it...Dave caused a slight directional change that they didn't care for in retrospect...they have a huge catalog that affordable them the luxury of passing on playing it so they do..

As for AK and what I call his compartmentalization of the album/era. Yes, he had relapsed many times over the years, but the DN era was his darkest. Additionally, making OHM was a hardship from day one. They tried to make it a cohesive experience....starting with shipping Harleys over to Hawaii so they could bond while writing and recording. That didn't work....ever stymied by chemicals, radically different writing styles (RHCP had traditionally jammed together, while DN was used to a separation between members coming together with framed song structures), and writer's block. I have been in the same room with DN and AK in the mid 2000's. I watched them.....they were not very friendly.....no embraces, no welcoming laughs, no social accommodations of any sort. It was best described as a brief and rigid discussion...a decorous formality. I just don't think they are two personalities that mesh very well. I think, but obviously don't know, that the OHM era simply brings regret and shame to the guy.

I love Warped. Great song. But the one and only album I love by the RHCP is BSSM. I lost interest after that.

ok maybe I got a little carried away, they're not a monster band like Zeppelin or the Jimi Hendrix experience, but a really good band imo, great guitar player
Re: Porno For Pyros GGU Getting New Vinyl Reissue
And a great bass player.
Good musicianship all around.
The plaque that moves is hard filed
