Who really came up with the idea for Lollapalooza?
Who really came up with the idea for Lollapalooza?
I read a post on Casey's FB page that she actually thought of the idea including the name. Several people posted that they were there the night the conversation took place.

if you ask ian astbury he will tell you he thought it up with his festival "gathering of the tribes".AdmitI wrote:I read a post on Casey's FB page that she actually thought of the idea including the name. Several people posted that they were there the night the conversation took place.
A Gathering of the Tribes was a two-day music and culture festival organized by Ian Astbury and promoter Bill Graham, held in California in October 1990. It is considered the precursor to the Lollapalooza touring festivals of the 1990s, an opinion shared by Astbury himself.[1] The festival was held at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View on October 6 and the Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa on October 7.[2] The event was intended to raise money for and awareness of Native-American-related causes. A performance by the American Indian Dance Theatre preceded the festival each day.[2] The concert grounds also hosted tents for Act Up, Amnesty International, Greenpeace, Rock the Vote, and local animal rights organizations.[3]
The artists featured were Soundgarden, Ice-T, Indigo Girls, Queen Latifah, Joan Baez, Steve Jones, Michelle Shocked, Iggy Pop, The Cramps, London Quireboys, The Mission UK and Public Enemy.[1][4][5] The Los Angeles Times music critic described Canadian band Crash Vegas and UK band The Charlatans UK as the festival's "least-known performers", both deserving "fuller hearings in more intimate surroundings".[6] Iggy Pop's performance was described as "restrained" compared to his typical "combustive live" performances.[6] According to Astbury, the diversity of bands demonstrated that "us and them doesn't exist any more".

Yep it was Ian
Re: Who really came up with the idea for Lollapalooza?
Someone was implying she came up with the name, not the idea. Casey responded in that post that she did not come up with the name, and actually hated it when Perry mentioned it to her.
Re: Who really came up with the idea for Lollapalooza?
As I recall, Lollapalooza was inspired by Reading Fest. Ian Astbury did not invent the music festival.

and all these years i thought lollapalooza was the first festival ever.
there are so many similarities between the "tribes" festival and lollapalooza. i'm sure perry used the idea of that festival and made lolla.
can anyone name one original great idea perry had?
i can name quite a few terrible ones. teeth...kind heaven...enit...etc...

People have
called Porno for Pyros leader and Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell a
lot of things. But lazy isn’t one of them. Now, in addition to his
chores in his band (at press time today, the Pornos tour, which was to
hit the road again Wed., Jan. 15, had been canceled, according to a
Warner Bros. Records publicist; check “Music News of the World” on
Friday for further details), his newly re-instated status as part of the
Lolla brain trust and his on-going involvement with the fledgling ENIT
festival, the former Jane’s Addiction figurehead is launching another
typically quirky new venture, an on-line record label.
Never one to follow, Farrell has gotten together
with the producer of his web site, Teeth (www.teeth.net), David Turin, to
launch Insect World Records, a most unusual singles-based label that will focus
on the ambient/techno/jungle spectrum of music, with most of its artists to be
pooled from the ranks of unsigned DJ’s, off-beat musicians, friends and other
interesting folks who cross Farrell’s path, all of whom will make their debut
on the Internet.
We caught up with Turin at Teeth headquarters in Venice
Beach, California the other day and asked him to unravel the mystery that is
Insect World. “Perry meets so many interesting and talented people that we
thought it would be cool to get them in the Porno for Pyros studio to just jam
and record those jams, sending them out live over the Internet while they
happen. Our ethic will be to record jams, not prepared material, unless someone
has something that catches our ear,” said Turin about the ideology of the still
very-fledgling label.
“What he [Farrell] had in mind was, instead of
recording songs people had already figured out, to record sessions like Miles
Davis used to, just get folks jamming.” Turin said the first of these
unconventional “jams” will take place this Sunday (Jan. 12) and will feature a
San Francisco band called Beyond Race, who will be joined by Middle-Eastern
musician Plazka, perhaps pal Farrell, and “whoever else drops by.”
The jam
will be accessible through the Teeth site (www.teeth.net/radio), although Turin
said future jams will be accessible from the Insect World site
(www.insectworld.com). The broadcast is scheduled for 6 P.M. California time,
but Turin suggested people check into the Teeth site for updates.

Re: Who really came up with the idea for Lollapalooza?
Ian has indeed commented that he was inspired by the 80's rock festivals in Europe to bring that sort of thing over to the US.creep wrote:if you ask ian astbury he will tell you he thought it up with his festival "gathering of the tribes".AdmitI wrote:I read a post on Casey's FB page that she actually thought of the idea including the name. My friend and I went to the Costa Mesa 10/6/90 GOTT show, mainly for The Cramps and Iggy Pop on the same stage. If I remember right, Public Enemy was a no-show. The encore was Steve Jones and his band, Ian and Billy Duffy playing a few Sex Pistols and Cult songs (The Cult was on hiatus at the time). Most of the good bands played during the day time and I think the whole thing ended pretty early in the evening. It was a decent day but the 1st Lollapalooza was far better organized and the lineup was infinitely better.
Re: Who really came up with the idea for Lollapalooza?
Woodstock 69 had a ton of variety of bands. So yea, the festival idea probably started then. But Perry's vision was to have 6-8 non mainstream bands of various genres headline a traveling festival across the US on a major tour. That was a pretty big deal at the time. I still remember being 17 and walking into lolla 91 in New Jersey and feeling like I was a part of something awesome. And it was new and wasn't totally packed. The next year I remember walking in to the same venue while Pearl Jam was playing 2nd I think and remembering that the place was absolutely full. Within one year it had become the mainstream.
Re: Who really came up with the idea for Lollapalooza?
I have only been to two. 1 and 2.....Lolla 1 ranks as a co #1 concert experience of my life, reigning with Prince on the Musicology tour.
2 was interesting for a couple of reasons.....Pearl Jam opened and killed it. No one really compared as follow ups. Ministry was fairly incredible and the Chilis were abysmal. And then there was the fact that it was a date. The girl who took me was pissed her boyfriend excluded her the year before so she got tix and took me to 2. We've been married for 21 years now.

Re: Who really came up with the idea for Lollapalooza?
if you saw it down here lush opened...that sticks with me because it was so strange seeing them and pearl jam during the day...if you were down here did you catch porno at the side stage? still remember that...people were climbing the light poles to the top and just swan diving off into the crowd/dirt...saw the parting of the red sea a few times that show
Re: Who really came up with the idea for Lollapalooza?
At what was the Pacific Amp? I have a memory of Mona going to the bathrooms and missing the opening of PJ..... Anyways, I did notice then how odd it was to see them in the daylight (with such a great show). The year before Living Colour was on during the day and it was a disaster. People were bored or just meandering about and LC was not at their best. Even then they were one of my fave bands.kv wrote:if you saw it down here lush opened...that sticks with me because it was so strange seeing them and pearl jam during the day...if you were down here did you catch porno at the side stage? still remember that...people were climbing the light poles to the top and just swan diving off into the crowd/dirt...saw the parting of the red sea a few times that show
On PFP, no. My thinking was stay focused on the main stage with my new girl as she really wasn't a music fanatic. As it was, it was a bit of a mistake.....Al was wasted and firing deep cutting insults to the crowd which bothered her.
Re: Who really came up with the idea for Lollapalooza?
oh ok ya i was at irvine...ya they played when ice cube was on main stage....al was on fire the show i saw...black out drunk his roadies duck taped his hands to his ankles after pantsing him..but i think lush opened all tour though who knows i clearly was pacing myself that day to even have these memories lol
first 3 lollas were all rad (imho) then it all went down hill

Wasn't there a Ministry documentary in the works? I remember seeing a preview and Navarro was in it. Did that ever come out?
