Dave Spoofed On Family Guy

[Pandemonium]

On Family Guy tonight they did a quick bit where Peter says something about scuba diving with Dave Navarro which cuts to Dave and another scuba diver who gets his foot caught in coral with his air running out. Dave motions he'll share his air mouthpiece leading to the other diver reacting first in horror then cutting his own throat as Dave edges closer. Cartoon diver Dave looked pretty funny.

After the Star Wars joke, and this joke (have there been others?), it's time to let the man make fun of himself too.

... I know that it wasn't the first reference. In fact, there was a Jane's Addiction reference on American Dad a few years ago, too:



But that doesn't mean the audience is supposed to get the reference, or the "joke". Maybe Macfarlane likes the band and thinks he's being clever.

I think Dave is a lot more recognized than you would think. He's always seemed to find a way to remain in the public consciousness.

I think with MacFarlane, a lot of his 80's and 90's cultural references are hit and miss with his audience so yeah, I'd bet a big number of viewers probably don't get some of the jokes like this. I agree the "joke" was kind of lame but the depiction of Dave (who looks like a chubby armed child with a bunch of random tattoos in the cartoon) made me laugh.

I know more than a few people that know who he is from all of the bad TV he's done over the last several years, and are completely oblivious to Jane's Addiction. 25 years ago, who would have thought Dave would have far more mainstream fame than Perry? Also there's the Chili Peppers stint.

As for the joke, I thought it was hilarious, I sure wouldn't do bong hits with him.

As for the Family Guy audience, I'm sure the entire audience gets plenty of the pop culture references, while plenty more blow right past them, but I expect the vast majority got that one.
