can't agree with you guys. nothing sounds more boring than classical music by eric avery. maybe he should close the laptop, pick up a bass, call a guitar player and a drummer and make some music?

But then he'd have to work with other humans, and that doesn't appear to be his favourite thing to do...

Boy, if that's not a spot on comment I don't know what is.

I still scratch my head in wonderment at how that NIN deal fell through.

Probably because every damn NIN show looks like this now...

...in order to cover up that it's 5 dudes on keyboards and one dude on a xylophone.

comment of the year. i've still enjoyed the past few NIN shows i've seen but i couldn't really put words to what i thought was sort of bullshit about it. the reason is that the answer is visual.

'i'm tired of rock and roll and i'm making a classical record' said no rock star, ever, on their way to making something any good. EA joins billy joel and others on a long list short on interesting output. (frank zappa is the exception to this rule, by the way. and while i'm on the subject, i loved dweezil's zappa plays zappa last week in connecticut, doing 'one size fits all'.)

I did not enjoy the last NIN show I attended. In fact, I walked out after an hour.

Wave Goodbye was amazing. It was deep cuts and a band firing on all cylinders. Lights in the Sky was amazing. They brought the hits and put visuals to every song that matched the vibe.

The last tour though was complete masturbation. It was more "what weird thing can we do with lights" and then Trent picked a bunch of mellow songs to play because he blew his voice out back in 2008.

It's fine to be mellow, but don't cover it up with a light show. I think Jane's was spot on with their show back on the Relapse and Strays tour when they'd do a few songs electric, stick an acoustic set in the middle, then finish electric.

Trent is just being a fucking pretentious artist douchebag who cares more about presentations that hide his declining singing abilities and less about how to make his catalogue work in a new context. He should have copied Perry. Acoustic hides all sorts of shit when you used to be a screamer.

Last time I Saw NIN was on Ninja tour and I really dug it. When I tried to watch some of their last shows online I had to turn it off. The light show thing is stupid.

The NINJA show was cool, in fact better'n the previous two tours I caught back in '05 and '05 (I skipped the Lights In The Sky tour) especially because I was in the pit but the two final LA area shows (Hollywood Palladium w/full performance of The Downward Spiral) and the very last show a week later at The Wiltern (a nearly 40 song set) were on a whole 'nother level and rank as the two greatest NIN shows I've ever seen.

They were bad on that shitty With Teeth tour and marginally better on NINJA. The last really fucking good NIN tour was Fragility.

Twiggy was not the greatest bass player they ever had, that's for sure. Aaron North was somewhat entertaining, but no Robin Finck.

Fragility was amazing though. That was the best lineup of the band playing their best songs.

i saw them many times over the years, from when they first broke. they were great on lolla 1 and woodstock 94 and also later in the year in 94 at madison square garden. transcendent really. i liked with teeth at hammerstein although it was clear to me that the roid rage trent wasn't nearly the figure he was in earlier shows. (ironic, here at ANR, as i think of it, that perry's new appearance, which should maybe be called 'with fake teeth', is also a different guy than the earlier one.) i've hardly ever seen them them after that except NINJA, which was good, and the stupid lights thing at virgin fest baltimore 08 where i was bored so i left to see kanye west on the other stage, which was a different kind of boring, but better.

Aaron North bringing out a cheap guitar for the final song at every show so he could smash it was the lamest shit ever. I get that by nature of the stage production their performances need to be somewhat scripted, but not the chaotic bits. I felt like I was watching a band playing NIN, not a band that was NIN.

Wasn't that because, in layman's terms, Eric couldn't play the parts?
