Thoughtful Interview with Dave
Thoughtful Interview with Dave
I'd never seen this before, perhaps others have. Appears to be from about 2006. It's about conquering fear, in his case, after his mother's death.
Whenever you think Dave is doing something silly, it's always good to remember he is actually this thoughtful guy. All things considered, I respect the amount of positive perspective he has on his mother's death and his life since.
The interviewer is a bit douchey.

it's kind of a little too simplictic thinking, isn't it? He says one should just face his or her fears and then whats the worst thing that can happen? Lots of really fucked up things can happen to people if they face their fears, so they i.e. feel worse then before they did. And of course the opposite is very true sometimes also.
But I mean, I read somewhere that when Dave played Woodstock with the Chili Peppers he was so afraid to go on he doubted he could play. Say he had gone on and then completely bombed, played everything wrong and in a nervous way, that would have been a disaster for him and would have set him back. Maybe he would have been out of RHCP....back to the drawing board Dave...imo

It also depends on the level of fear.
If the fear is so debilitating that it is a phobia, then you need professional help to face that fear.
If the fear is just self doubt then sometimes you just need to pull up your big girl panties and face that fear.

I think Dave was more afraid of that huge light bulb hat they made him wear at woodstock .. and/or maybe the whole sock dick routine ..Matz wrote:it's kind of a little too simplictic thinking, isn't it? Depends on the fear and how you face it. If you're afraid of bears, going to the Zoo might be a good idea. Going to a remote forest full of bears probably isn't. Plus, some things you should be afraid of. It's part of what keeps us alive.
Re: Thoughtful Interview with Dave
Yeah, I think it's more about being resolute enough to take some kind of action and building from that. If you're afraid of bears, recognize that just saying the word "bear" doesn't result in anything disastrous. Nothing "real" happens if you say "bear." Then, maybe look at some pictures on the Internet. Try to figure out in what way they are good. Yes, they are potentially deadly for humans, but they take good care of their babies. They share food. Their cubs are almost as playful as dogs are. Watch a documentary about them, amongst many other animals. Finally, realize that the odds of your ever encountering a bear in a position of disadvantage are extremely low, unless you go to a remote forest during bear mating season and try to fuck a bear. End result:hokahey wrote:Depends on the fear and how you face it. If you're afraid of bears, going to the Zoo might be a good idea. Going to a remote forest full of bears probably isn't. This year I sort of started developing a fear of having panic attacks. And I spent a good two or three weeks with quite a serious burst of agoraphobia. As soon as I exited my building, I'd start having a slight breathing difficulty, my palms would start sweating a bit, my heart rate would go up and I'd have a tough time doing any sort of eye contact. But with the method I outlined there, I managed to get past it.

Dave actually said he was so uncomfortable in the stupid light bulb that he forgot about the crowd. It worked out.trevor ayer wrote:I think Dave was more afraid of that huge light bulb hat they made him wear at woodstock .. and/or maybe the whole sock dick routine ..Matz wrote:it's kind of a little too simplictic thinking, isn't it? With that said, Dave has ALWAYS been the most intelligent member of the band. Perry is weird, Eric is smart, and perk is positive, but Dave has ALWAYS been just a straight up genius. It's what is so disappointing about the whole pornstars and skin hooks and MTV shows thing. He has so much to say and so much talent to put music to it, and he doesn't. He takes drugs or pops pills or fucks chicks or does a reality shows instead.
The downfall of janes addiction is missed opportunities due to distractions. They are all fucked up human beings trying to get by in a crazy world and their musical ability just never seems to be their go-to primary outlet for it.
Re: Thoughtful Interview with Dave
The downfall of Janes was that the band ran its course and the well went dry.

I remember a very thoughtful interview with Dave in a local So-Cal magazine shortly after the break up, and likely around the time of Deconstruction. It might have been Bam. I think Dave was in early recovery and had a shaved head. I remember the interviewer describing how the two met up in a coffeehouse, and that Dave was carrying a backpack with pen and paper because he was doing a lot of writing. Dave was humble and grounded. A lot less LA than he seems to be now (if I can say such a thing).

The problem wasn't when they are LA.blackcoffee wrote:I remember a very thoughtful interview with Dave in a local So-Cal magazine shortly after the break up, and likely around the time of Deconstruction. The problem is when they become Hollywood.

Ya, that's what BAM was originally about, but BAM was available in every decent record store here in SoCal with bi-weekly LA/OC/San Diego-specific concert info (vs the NorCal edition) right through the late 90's. And for all intents and purposes, once punk and heavy metal became an LA-centric thing in the early 80's, the mag rarely covered NorCal music happenings even after hair metal died at the beginning of the 90's and music shifted towards Alternative Rock. I think Janes made the cover 3 times in a 12 month span between '90 - '91.kv wrote:BAM is bay area music...ie nor calblackcoffee wrote:I remember a very thoughtful interview with Dave in a local So-Cal magazine shortly after the break up, and likely around the time of Deconstruction. May have been the LA Weekly. I think they ran a couple Jane's cover stories in '90 - '91.blackcoffee wrote:right you are. Not sure what mag it was in then, but it was definitely post Jane's and was a regional publication.kv wrote:yaya that too but it's a nor cal mag
