Personally, I think Hot Lava is much worse. Lyrics on Another Soulmate are pretty bad, but Hot Lava is pathetic. Musically, I'd rather listen to Another Soulmate than Hot Lava, too. Better chorus, more rocking, no DJ scratching, etc. Hot Lava is, incredibly, more cheesy than Another Soulmate. Songs like Underground, Twisted Tales, True Nature, To Match The Sun, etc. are soooooo much better than Hot Lava.

First time i listened to Antother Soulmate all the way through. It reminds me of Superhero for some reason. Seems to tread similar ground. Not as bad as I thought it would be, but I don't want to listen to it again.

The thing is Hot Lava isn't even a serious song... it's like judging "Wake Up, Wendy" from the same South Park album (which is a good song, btw.) It was Perry doing something different, something not related to rock, where he is supposed to feel comfortable.

I voted for "Hot Lava." Sure, it's not a great song but musically its far more interesting than "Another Soulmate" and it's a fucking novelty song to begin with, a tossed away one-off meant to fit in with the slap-stickiness of South Park. "Another Soulmate," on the other hand, is supposedly a Beatles-esque rock song with profound insight about human relationships (neither of which it actually is). It is supposed to be a quality Jane's song. If it had been included on the South Park soundtrack, even to some new movie that came out this summer, I would have evaluated it much differently, thinking it was written as a form of jest. Instead, the song is just a joke. (Basically, what Larry said!)

My point is people harp on Perry now more than ever due to social media, and the internet in general. If Hot Lava never existed until, say, next month...everyone here would talk about how it's so fucking terrible and Perry has lost it, etc. But it came out in 1998 and it seems like people give it a pass because of that, even though we could talk about how bad Hot Lava is right now on the internet.

Then there's the folk who say well it doesn't matter because it's not under the Jane's Addiction moniker, so it automatically doesn't count. Well, P4P isn't under the Jane's tag either and yet I still love them. PerryEtty isn't under the Jane's moniker yet people here will still care about that and claim Perry's lost it and some might even say it counts in ruining the Jane's legacy.

BTW I'm guessing the poll results are going to be skewed because certain people thought they were voting for which song they like better rather than which song is worse.

Anyone who thinks Hot Lava is better than Another Soulmate has very questionable taste as a Jane's fan, IMO.
And saying Hot Lava fits in with the humor of South Park makes very little sense to me. What does South Park have to do with hot lava and lyrics like:

South Park is a witty show that also incorporates gross-out humor, but I don't see how Hot Lava has anything to do with it. I love Hot Lava! It's a "cover" of a song fragment from a Season 1 episode of South Park, so it's not like Perry can really be blamed for coming up with it. It's just a fun little song. Reminds me of Kinky from Satellite Party but better. Would've gone great on a 3rd p4p album.. just a silly pop song not too unlike Pets in that regard. It's not far off from Hard Charger either when you think about it.. just missing some nice guitar work that Pete and/or Dave would have brought.

That distinction is not about a matter of taste, but a difference in genre all together. "The Patience Bossa" is a silly song, too, but one I'd much rather hear than "Another Soulmate." Because it's a kids song, I am not going to try to judge it against the calibre of what Jane's Addiction has been capable of doing. I'll easily concede that I bring different criteria to each, just like I do an Adam Sandler movie and a Wes Anderson one.

hot lava is easily better. i love this song. it's like hard charger's little brother. this little phase where perry was actually using live instruments along with some electronic samples/beats was a great time for perry solo.

not all the songs on his solo record from this era are as good, but it's an up period for solo perry. Rev is one my all time favorite perry songs. it stands nicely next to his porno for pyro stuff.

i wouldn't compare any solo perry to jane's addiction, he depends to heavily on his writing partner, whoever that might be at the time. not that he can't just nail a good song by himself, but it's tough for him to consistently put out good songs without a nice writing partner.

it's a god damn shame, when we are basically comparing throw away songs.
