Good Gods Urge

#1 Post by Juana » Sat Jun 15, 2013 12:19 pm

So I put this on this AM for my morning fishing and I remembered how much I absolutely loved this album. I remember being so amped when it was coming out it was the soundtrack to my surf sessions and then my pot smoking when I was a teen. Now, its the soundtrack to my pot smoking and my fishing. Such an underrated album IMHO. A lot of people like the first P4P album more but this one to me has always been perfect. I like the first record but I love this album.

You all have any stories about this album or Tom Foolery you got into inspired by this album?

A handful of songs from each porno album are good. GGU could lose FreeWay and add Hard Charger. Then it would have been very good. Kimberly Austin is kind of weak too. But I love GGU, 100 Ways and Bali Eyes.

I haven't listened to either album in a long time, but if I had to choose I'd go with GGU as well. Great songwriting coupled with a unique vibe. But the first one is a very close second for me. It's cool that they're so different

PFP's PFP by a Darwin finch nose. Likely do to Cursed Female...my favorite song of theirs. When this album came out I didn't really give it a fair shot being so crestfallen by Jane's demise. It's radical departure in style only made it worse, but after time I came to love them both. I asked Pete if he felt the backlash about being the 'new' guitarist, and he said yup, and it hurt.

Yeah sucks for Pete but I honestly prefer his playing to Dave's on a lot of things. I like Pete's style more.

I always felt the people that were part of the 1.0 movement never gave GGU a fair shake and then Relapse happened so it was kind of forgotten about.

I love it just as much as the Jane's albums. I bought that album day 1, drove down to the beach and listened in the car while it lightly rained. It was the soundtrack for the next year or two of my life. Beautiful album. Singing Bali Eyes with Pete playing guitar is a cherished memory.

Bali Eyes and Kimberly Austin could easily be my favorite PFP songs. So simple and beautiful.

I recently listened to that album a couple of times, for the first time in years.

I definitely love it.

It is very odd, but beautiful. A great combination.

i agree that petes guitar work is a bit better than daves .. only cuz dave likes to squeal like cc deville all over everything .. well he used to .. some of that tgea restraint would have come in handy back in the day .. good gods and pfp both have clunkers but the good stuff is as good as janes 1.0 imo .. still wish they would git their shit together and tour all 6 records .. xxx - kettle with pete n dave .. throw in a psicom song and a spread song or 2 .. at least there was that 5 minutes at private parts party and that recent cursed female w/janes + pete ..

I regret never seeing P4P. I wasn't initially too enamored of the 1st albums almost demo level production when it came out and then I heard and read a few reviews of that tours shows that weren't very good, especially regarding sets being barely an hour long so I passed. GGU was a grower for me, much prefer it over the 1st album.

I had a chance to buy GGU on vinyl for about $50 a few years ago, didn't and now kick myself in the ass every time I think about it. I had it on cd when it came out in '96 and I've smoked some excellent shit to that record over the years.

I always thought Freeway, Dogs Rule the Night, Tahitian Moon and Thick of It All would have made great Jane's tracks.

Pete's a pretty classy guitar player. But Navarro could have been -- and almost was -- one of the greats. That's why he is so frustrating. As to the "squealy notes," I think Trevor is referring to the awesome pinch harmonics on stuff like "Had a Dad," which are very much based in the metal lead traditions, but in no way invalidate DN's technical and emotive capability on the instrument.

The fact of the matter is that the solo in "Three Days" alone -- with its liquid metal fusion of Jerry Garcia, Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page -- is enough to qualify Navarro for the pantheon of great players.

I like GGU. I was disappointed with the s/t, as I was among those coming down from the JA 1.0 rush. By GGU, I'd more or less accepted the fact that the Jane's I loved was never coming back. Also, I enjoyed the vibey kush sounds that they were getting into. But probably good they stopped before they became a lightly psychedelic version of Jack Johnson.

The show I saw is to this day the best show I've ever attended. Felt like watching the vids of old Janes shows. Tiny club. High energy. Crowd going nuts. I'll never forget some kid crowd surfing up to Perry and handing him a ring, and Perry replying "A gift for me? A gift for youuu!" Queue Watt pounding out the Mt Song bass line and absolute mayhem in the crowd.

17 years later and it still gives me goose bumps.

And I still love PFP self titled a little more that GGU. But GGU has it's moments for me

Weird, I don't remember so many people being cool with this album.

GGU is arguably my favorite Jane's-relayed music. It's a 10/10 for me. I have more of a connection with it than I do with NS and Ritual!

I got it when it was released; I was 13 and my 7th grade school year was winding down. I remember leaving THE MALL with it. Oddly enough, I was by myself (very odd since I was usually there with buddies...not sure why my memory only shows myself, maybe my friends got picked up by another parent before me) and sitting on the curb by one of the mall entrances waiting to be picked up. I remember opening it and looking through the booklet just loving the vibe. I had seen the "Tahitian Moon" music video and thinking it was something really different than whatever else I had been seeing on MTV.

At first listen, I thought it was underwhelming, but then it became my summer soundtrack. None of my friends liked it, but I loved it and to this day it's one of my favorite albums of all time. Tracks that took the longest to grow on me were "Thick of it All" and "Wishing Well". Later I would think those tracks were superb, so it then became a perfect album to me.

Don't a lot of Jane's fans dislike 'Freeway'? I always thought that was one of the most interesting tracks P4P did, along with 'Blood Rag', which was originally a Jane's song anyway

Not to sound all hippy, but both albums are just different trips. I love both of them. The first one brings the gritty jerking off in the riots crack smoking perry while the next brings out the trippy pot smoking surfer perry.

Having missed 1.0 and not seeing jane's live until relapse, the 7 or 8 porno for pyros shows I saw were some of the best times of my life. Enit at pnc arts center was one of the most amazing shows I've been to.

Is that confirmed? I always heard that, about blood rag, but where does it come from? Is it on a janes bootleg, did Eric say something....etc?
