Sunday night rocked as an enthusiastic crowd witnessed an eclectic line-up of musicians including the West Seattle band, Bend, with Ben Jenkins, Jay Cates, and Patrick Smail. There was a surprise visit by guitar player Peter DiStefano of the critically-acclaimed alternative band Porno for Pyros. The band hit it big in the mid-'90's with famed vocalist/songwriter Perry Farrell and percussionist/songwriter Stephen Perkins of Jane's Addiction.
DiStefano was in town from California to see Farrell perform at Bumbershoot.
"I had a meeting with Perry," DiStefano told the West Seattle Herald. "We're going to do Porno for Pyros in 2013. I have a band, Lance Herbstrong. It's two DJ's and me on guitar. We do mashups of songs and I play over it all with, like, Jimi Hendrix and Jerry Garcia. It's a lot of fun."
He explained how the name Porno for Pyros came to be.
"The Lallapalooza manager for Jane's Addiction, Stewart Ross, was with Perry Farrell while Perry was looking through a fireworks catalogue and got to the centerfold. And Stewart says, 'Wow. That's pornography for pyromaniacs.' And Perry said, 'That's great! We're naming the band Porno for Pyros.'"
DiStefano, 47, said proudly that he is "15 years off of heroin."
Matt Bradley of Deadliest Catch
Matt Bradley, 40, attended with his wife, Angela. He has fished with the Northwestern for the past 13 years of the Deadliest Catch. He told the West Seattle Herald that he, too, had drug issues and overcame them in rehab, which has been highly publicized. He said he is on the straight and narrow now.
"The show got big," he explained. "The demographics in the beginning was males, ages 18 to 25. The TV show since has hit everybody, middle-aged housewives, little kids, every age, race, and is seen in 125 countries, and in seven different languages. For me, I try to stay grounded. First and foremost I'm a fisherman, a husband, a father, and now a grandfather. I live in North Seattle. The last thing I shot (for the Deadliest Catch) was two months ago. I'll be back in The Bering Sea in October to shoot Season 9."
Helping out the bands was Tavis LeMay of Burien who crews with Alice in Chains, and Mark Cavener, of BMPP Media Group, LLC. He brought the musicians to Feedback Lounge.
