Do you like the earlier stuff that's more punk/alt influenced? Opiate?

This song just sounds like a heavier JA song:

Or Hush?
I like Opiate a lot, very interesting piece of music, not feeling Hush so much. But I've only listened them once so that can change. They're pretty bass happy as Creep says, but I think in Opiate that approach works great.

The singer (I know it's that Maynard guy from APC) made me think of Steve Isaacs for some reason  don't know if it's the tone or phrasing or what. Well, maybe that's a silly observation, it's late over here and I'm hammered.

I'll definitely listen to some more of this

i saw tool 2 nights in a row opening for rollins band at cbgbs .. they were touring opiate .. which is a pretty fuckin good record .. and at least half of undertow is pretty fuckin good too .. lost interest after that .. but those early records .. if janes had come out with a record sounding like that after ritual .. holy fuck!

I'm not gay for Tool at all.

I like Tool. Opiate is too metal for me. Undertow is decent. I love Aenima from start to finish. Lateralus, I felt, was a little on the long side. It seemed like they obnoxiously jammed out the songs for a long time just to do it, rather than to suit the song. So I am just kind of OK with that album. But I am not a huge fan of 10,000 days. Seemed to just tread the same ground that Lateralus did.

I saw them on the Aenima tour and they were amazing. Caught them twice for Lateralus back in 2001 and they were just ok. The whole "standing in the dark, not moving, not talking to the crowd" thing is a real bummer. I haven't seen them since and probably never will again.

I am however quite gay for A Perfect Circle. I've seen those guys 7 times, with every lineup the band has had. I think they are amazing and can largely do no wrong. I will continue to shell out money to see them in the future.

Puscifer is very good too. I like them more than Tool as well. Only caught them once so far, but the live band were all hired from Billy Howerdel's solo band, and they are excellent. I would see them again.

But Tool... nah. If you own Aenima, you own their best album and there hasn't been anything they did prior, or after, that even compares.

It's a good thing Trent and Maynard are still churning out amazing music. That way Perry can put them on Lollapalooza and say "look what a genius I am!"

Are we on Tool now? Are they better than STP? Worse than Pearl Jam? Where are Gogol Bordello in all of this... equal best? Is this even the same thread where the same discussion was had a week or so ago? Not that i care at all (as does no fucker else) but didn't Jane's v.600 play a show the other night... shouldn't we be giving that a little coverage... i mean, they might have played a new song or something, something killer sounding like "i got the handbag-buying tequila blues"... that would be sick.

I'll check back in a few days... please ensure that the very same conversation is being had. I'm going back to the Game of Thrones thread so that i can keep bang up to date with a show that i've never watched one second of. Actually, scrap that, i'm going straight back to the Kate Upton thread :boobs: :yikes: :boobs:

Tool are definitely better than STP. Bigger too. Both musically and just from a performance standpoint. But that largely has to do with the fact that Weiland is a fucking junkie mess who forgets words and can hardly sing anymore. I wouldn't even put them in the same league.

As far as comparisons to Pearl Jam... They are probably almost on equal footing. Both are still selling a hell of alot of records to their devoted fanbase, and a hit song on radio easily will get the rest of the music-buying public on board. They both sell out arenas. They both headline festivals all over the world.

Gogol Bordello? The cool new thing of 2011 who still haven't done shit? Yeah let's give them another 2 years to be replaced by the next big thing before we start talking about them in the midst of legends.

... They're not even close to the same league as big arena-rock bands, but they don't want to be... they do gypsy punk and they do it fucking well. I've seen them twice... the second time is by far the best show I've ever been in (not just seen, but fucking destroyed). They tour like crazy and their music is consistently what it is. Percussive strumming is fucking difficult, and the use of violin and traditional gypsy melody is great imho.

They've also been around since the late 90s, and the singer has been in three great indie movies (Everything Is Illuminated was the biggest, a GREAT book by Jonathan Safran Foer, and a good version of it for the movie; he was also in Madonna's movie "Filth and Wisdom", and he did the music for "Wristcutters: A Love Story").

Great scene where the other band members play a folk band (the translator in the movie is the singer; the movie is from 2005):

Well, the singer scream-sings in broken English/Russian/Ukrainian/Romani, the music is not something most American/Canadian/UK ears are used to... violin and Am/Fm gypsy traditional guitar mixed with punk and metal.

So there's that.

I love them Gogol and yeah they are amazing live. As for why they're not bigger they do not want to be, they want to make music and tour. They're gypsies and live like the gypsies. Perry obviously liked them enough to take them to Lolla in South America as well. They were also paid by Coca Cola to make the jingle for Euro 2012. They're alot more popular in Europe than the US much like say Placebo.

But I can say they have sold out Stubbs which I have seen them at a few times and while that is not an arena that is a venue that a lot of bands play regularly. Their soundcheck and their set up in the green room was awesome too, never seen so much Vodka for just like 8 or 9 people. They know how to party.

 Well, I think Eugene lives in Brazil now anyway, so it was probably a good idea to take them to South America, where he lives. But yeah, they're huge in Europe. The Euro 2012 jingle was okay...

Their last album was produced by Rick Rubin b/c of Madonna's recommendation... she really likes them for some reason, but she sucks, and they ruined a great gypsy classic, Lela Pala Tute because of her.

Check out the difference in authenticity:

Ugh... but Gogol will never be inauthentic, even with Rick Rubin's shitty production on their album... The songs are mind-blowing "events" live. :drink:
