Download TGEA for free

#1 Post by JOEinPHX » Wed Jul 11, 2012 9:55 am

Dobel/Perry is at it again!

http://www.emimusicpromo.com/JanesDobel/

Like Dobel, and get the entire record for free.

I wonder how the other 3 members of Jane's feel about this. If Perry is the only one being paid by Dobel, does that mean the other guys are getting screwed out of royalties with this promo?

Or did Dobel pay the other members as well?

Someone ask Dave if he's being paid so Dobel can give his music away for free.

Capitol is getting paid. Royalties on promotional uses of a sound recording are probably on page 198 of their contract. Perry owns the bulk of publishing, which is a different beast. He surely gets paid as songwriter (along with Sitek) for most of the songs. Haven't looked at the credits to see how many list Dave and Perk as composers, but it really comes down to the splits. And, judging from history (where Perry took 60% of publishing), there is precedent for him getting more pie.

They will make nothing from the label with this promotion. In fact, I'm guessing they make nothing from the label for this release in general.

Also, keep in mind that Perry and the band are not able to refuse this use. The label makes the decision, and pays the publisher mechanical royalties for "duplications," and then the songwriter(s) are paid by the publishers. The label pays based on the contract, for which they largely dictate the terms.

Unless a band sells millions of units, NO ONE makes money off record sales. Touring and merchandise is the only way bands make money now.

Dobel is a tequila company. They are a Lollapalooza sponsor this year and Perry is doing commercials for them about what a rockstar he is

I got mine for free but it was a physical copy of the album. I have since not listened to it at all. I tried to get all the way thru it once and was unable to.

They're both terrible. Terribly produced, terribly mixed, terribly sung, and Dave's guitar tone sucks most of the time. Perk's drumming is almost unnecessary (it could be session drumming just as easily), and clearly who gives a fuck who plays bass on those songs?... What a waste.

But that's to be expected... they already made good, interesting, unique music 27 years ago... and burned out... It's not like anyone's listening to, e.g., Bowie's latest album and going: "Yeah that's so original and fresh!" ... That's just how it goes...

I think using the word terrible about Strays is unfair. It's very far from Ritual quality wise but it has solid songs like Price I Pay and Just Because. I also think that Dave's tone is fine and that his lead playing on Strays is way more inspired than what's on TGEA. I listened to the intro of Entourage yesterday which of course features Superhero and I enjoyed Dave's solo in that clip, sounds great

 Yeah, but listen to, e.g., Heathen. Then listen to Space Oddity or The Man Who Sold The World... clearly we run into the same territory as Jane's Addiction... the music is not even close to the same in sound, quality, uniqueness, etc... So you find yourself describing the newer music (from an established, long-time genius/innovator in 20th century music) as "okay", or "not a bad album, just not great"... and so on... when really, what it actually is... is boring shit that shouldn't have been recorded.

There are artists who manage to avoid this problem, partially because they didn't record supermassive hits in the first place (like, e.g., Nick Cave, or Einsturzende Neubauten, whose music has been SOLID for 20+ years, with little distinction between early and later quality...)

The difference is ... incredible.

Yeah but Bowie did like 30 albums before he ran out of ideas

Perry did 4.

bowie farting in the shower fucks TGEA in the ass. even his "less revolutionary" work comes off as creative, and very solid production wise, as well as vocally and instrumentally.
of course his work isn't always perfect, though i place Reality very high on my list of bowie albums.
Jane's doesn´t get to be compared to bowie. Maybe the cult. Maybe the new kids on the block. Maybe the pixies.
Not bowie. Not by a longshot

You're both missing the point of the analogy, which has nothing to do with either JA or Bowie in particular...

And, btw, 17 of Bowie's 25 studio albums shouldn't have been recorded.

No, i get it. Jane's is exactly like Stone Temple Pilots, but will never be as good as Bowie even at his worst.

Loud and clear.

 No, Nothing's Shocking is clearly better than at least 17 of Bowie's albums.
