i think his castaway period made him a bit more sour, if possible, and definitely a bit passive agressive. god knows what he went through in the dark lands of banned-dom

Re: Please don't fuck up the forums
I've ripped on Sonny in the past for doing his annual drama queen bs and reconciled that with the fact his way of letting the site run with a hands off policy was extremely successful. The thing is, Xiola was as good as it was *because* of the members, not any one person or the site owner/moderator.hokahey wrote:Yeah, his Q&A is a little much.bman wrote:Xiola.org was a great site. I thank Sonny immensely for that. BUT having said that......OMG..Get over it. It was just a site. I'm over there reading his blog. What's up his ass? Why so dramatic? Like the fact when he had all those Avry interviews and let them seep out little by little. I think Sonny may have taken himself a bit too seriously.
I talked to Sonny last night. He and I are square I suppose.
After running that site for as long as he did I understand him having a certain feeling of self-importance.
Plus. he never got to take a break from all of this like I did. I think I can understand his headspace. This can be a draining task.
Sonny has a certain element of smug self-importance that makes it clear he's going to have a hard time letting go of being a major figure in the Jane's fan community. All he needed to do was post a short bit his frontpage saying something like "I'm burned out running the site, good luck all (or fuck y'all), c-ya." Nope, he's gotta have a smug, bitter little Q&A bit ripping on others. IMO, his rips on Hokahey now have no merit considered how he pulled his site and the Eric interview down in such a pissy way.
At this point, we're moving on and rebuild our little dysfunctional community on our own and I'd bet it will be just as successful if not moreso than it was on Xiola.

Re: Please don't fuck up the forums
I know he and hoka had legitimate beef back in the day ('05 or some shit?), but I thought the personal attacks against hoka were a little unwarranted. Now, Hoka might have some different political views than I do and he does tend to get too heated during arguments (like any regular on an internet forum), but I think he can build a fine site here, and I support his efforts to do so.
Re: Please don't fuck up the forums
Maybe this should be up in the FAQ section
Re: Please don't fuck up the forums
Thanks guys. I talked to Sonny about the rips on me last night via Facebook. He agreed they were harsh but certainly made no efforts to apologize. He kept saying he has disagreements with friends and family but that doesn't change their friendships. I think he tried to smooth it over in his own way. He doesn't seem like the type to offer apologies. He imparted some ideas and wisdom and was encouraging about how to do this right.
I agree with some of the sentiments you have about him, but I also see his perspective maybe a bit more than others considering my past.
This is harder work than people think. Yes the users make the board, but I know firsthand how easy it is to run a board poorly and attract the wrong users. Sonny did an exceptional job with Xiola and worked harder than most will ever realize. I don't agree with how he ended it, but 99% of people didn't agree with how I ended ANR originally. I know that headspace and it's tough. You know how hard you've worked and no one else does.
I'm not trying to weave a sob story about the poor admins but keep in mind that Sonny offered up the defacto Jane's site for many many years where many many others failed. There's a reason for that, and much of it has to do with how he conducted himself and the community he helped shape.
Look at JA.org. Mike and Erik make that place almost unbearable. ANR was at times a total troll haven on the opposite end of the spectrum. Sonny found the balance, built the community, and now we've all moved here. It's up to us and up to me to make sure we maintain the balance that he best implemented.
Now, I don't agree with everything Sonny has ever said and done and have also found him smug and arrogant at times. That was the whole reason I started the first ANR. I couldn't stand Erik or Sonny and wanted an alternative. But over the years I've at least come to respect Sonny, something I can't say for Erik.
