perry and etty's new video
Re: perry and etty's new video
These are all fair points I think... I mean, I don't even really think about these "genres" or "trends" very much... I just know that I was drawn to Jane's Addiction in the first place because I actively disliked the trendy shit people were listening to in the late 90s/early 2000s, and because JA was the first band like that I was exposed to, where there didn't seem to be a trendy bone in the body of any of the members.
Turns out I was wrong and that that music WAS trendy, it just happened to be a long time before I got into it... and also those two albums are actually great art, as well as being part of a trend. But in general, there has always been a trend for "artsy" pretentious folk to claim to be "so into music", and raise up current trendy bands as "The Next Big Thing (tm)(r)(c)", even when it's just derivative boring radio shit (Kings of Leon OMFG!)... Sometimes these bands end up (or are) good/artistic/long-lasting, but that's too rare to take seriously most of the time.
But the reason I brought it up in this thread was that it occurred to me that Perry had been talking about Elctronica as that very "The Next Big Thing" for a long time, but by the time it DID become that thing (more or less), he's become far too passe and unartistic for it to matter.

In 87/88 they created their trend.

Perry was saying it's the next big thing because the Prodigy put out that Fat of The Land record and everyone and their brother bought it. And MTV had AMP playing every damn night for 3 hours.
He wasn't predicting shit. He was just putting artists on Lolla that were already selling.
If Perry turned on the radio today he'd be saying The Arcade Fire is the next big thing, tomorrow.
Re: perry and etty's new video
Not accurate. Eric once said Perry was wanting the original Jane's to add electronics and that GGU was an evolution of that. Hell, ENIT was before Fat of the Land. Perry was right there helping break these acts. Problem is he's just a good artist anymore in any regard.Six7Six7 wrote:Adurentibus Spina wrote:

Re: perry and etty's new video
Also, if Perry tried to sound like Arcade Fire, that'd be kind of interesting, but probably not as good as Arcade Fire's first album.
Re: perry and etty's new video
This girl has more talent in her pinky finger (and I don't like this cover that much tbh) than Perry/Etty and other people they've teamed up with.

Did Eric specifically refer to GGU when talking about what Jane's would've sounded like if they had kept going and added the electronic element? Kind of interesting if he did. I don't recall him ever giving his opinion about porno.hokahey wrote:Not accurate. Eric once said Perry was wanting the original Jane's to add electronics and that GGU was an evolution of that. As a gigantic fan I've come to the unfortunate conclusion, that Perry was never really a visionary. He was a maniac with an insane drive and for a few years he fronted the best rock band in the world ( 87-89, occasionally 1990 too ). Fans and the Media anointed him King, but I sorta' don't buy it anymore...Yes, he's incredibly influential but a whole, for most his career, Perry has been more miss then hit. Sometimes his misses are fantastic and grand....but still.
Since 2000 he's just living in his own world. This video is just...it's unbelievable.
I'm so embarrassed for him. He literally has NO ONE around him that speaks any sort of truth. Some days I wonder if he was EVER talented or had vision. I get a sense that it he's greatest gift was surrounding himself with really creative people.
Perry on his own is THIS.
Ugh.

I've come to a similar conclusion but there is no denying Perry was the most compelling aspect of Jane's and Porno for the best part of 10 years. That wasn't a coincidence and I don't think it was fluke either. Just watch one of the concerts from Jane's 1.0. Perry was incredible at that time.
My take is that he seems to be heavily influenced by those around him. When it was artistically credible individuals in the late '80s and early '90s (Casey, Eric, Pete), it presented Perry in a good light.
When it was Nuno, Carl and Etty, Perry's output suffered dramatically. Throw in years of drug abuse and wealth and he's now completely lost. Dave and Stephen don't appear to add much creatively but they certainly seem to lack good taste.
Didn't Perry once say "good taste stifles creativity"? He now seems to almost revel in bad taste. I think he takes a perverse enjoyment from doing the opposite to what people expect/want from him.

Like the photo Etty posted the other day comparing who has more designer shoes, he or Perry.elbuitre wrote:I've come to a similar conclusion but there is no denying Perry was the most compelling aspect of Jane's and Porno for the best part of 10 years. That's about as creative as we are getting.

There's no denying Perry was an incredible artist at one time. But yes, clearly influenced easily by who he surrounds himself with.
Re: perry and etty's new video
there is no denying that Perry was once a great artist, but it seems that time passed in the late 90s. He was clearly influenced by his women and his drugs. Youth also probably had something to do with it. As he got older his interests have changes and he probably is more concerned with his celebrity. His current muse isn't leading to good art.

If Perry wants to play with machines, I would prefer another kind of meat

Did you hear some of the jams and grooves from the TGEA sessions that Todd used in the teaser videos, but that Perry never sang on?
The band has plenty of creativity. Perry just doesn't know what to do with it.
Re: perry and etty's new video
I had just got finished jamming out Zeppelins "That's the way" with my guitarist ...sang till my voice gave out trying to get the arrangement right...and thought I'd check out what's the latest Jane's news?...I have always defended Perry...even thru his fluff....I'm out...The shark he jumped is dead...over and out!!!...Goodnight ...Good-night :(
Re: perry and etty's new video
It really bothers me that I spend all this time as a amateur trying so hard to get all the little pieces of a cover song just right...and he as a person who wrote some of the most important music I've ever heard in my life ...farts this out... Even shows up to make a video for this turd...I don't even know who he is now?...So far from everything I once worshipped....it's heartbreaking for me....I loved him and his art so much...The time and effort he took to get it just right back then...put his left nut into it....He has lost himself ..I thought he might find that piece he lost again one day ...but I think we know that person better than he does at this point...bummer

Re: perry and etty's new video
That's some shitty music right there. The guy even pretends to be singing the JA's "here we go"s at the beginning. "Pathetic" doesn't even begin to describe it.
