another soulmate-listen here

Goes without saying, yea. He's reading straight from a casting call wanted ad on one of the songs

If Deconstruction had been the fourth Jane's record, with Perry's vocals (at the time), it would easily be my favorite Jane's record.
Totally agree. If you listen to the America demo there's that harmonica thing in the middle that perry used on porno- it would've been awesome
Re: another soulmate-listen here
I think Deconstruction is perfect. Everything it has make it beautiful. It's much more than an "experimental rock" album. I'm glad Eric sang in those songs. After all, I think of Deconstruction as Eric's band. While the bass is usually buried in the mix, most of the songs (if not all of them) are bass-led. L.A. Song is delicious, as is America, Dirge, Wait For History, Single, One...
The last song is an obvious nod to Dave as a guitar player, and it's just a bonus track.
If I have to pick ONE album to listen to for the rest of my life and the options are Ritual and Deconstruction, I think I'd go with the latter.

It's pretty perfect.
Re: another soulmate-listen here
You guys are on crack. The lyrics are a bunch of nonsense. Except:
Stars also line down that street
You pretty little town
You sad flower in the sand
Give me, Give me some of you
Does your horizon burn?
That's some good shit.

It's not nonsense. The sun is setting over the city and he can see all the street lights lining the roads.

I know that. I meant: except the couplet from L.A. Song, which I understand and like.Six7Six7 wrote:It's not nonsense. The sun is setting over the city and he can see all the street lights lining the roads.
But lyrics like "kraft cheese and a cup of joe, raw fish in a burrito, game show straight to video, in the land of the setting sun"
Re: another soulmate-listen here
Maybe its just Eric's delivery.
Re: another soulmate-listen here
From 'Big Sur':
quiet the nervous cables
circuitries
spinal cord
and fingers drool
for the bell that rings
on and on
From 'Dirge':
pull me pull me into you
on your daddy’s couch
plastic jesus
blue grey clothing
hold our hands and fall in line
oh and I’m never cool
never cool
quiet the nervous cables
circuitries
spinal cord
and fingers drool
for the bell that rings
on and on
From 'Dirge':
pull me pull me into you
on your daddy’s couch
plastic jesus
blue grey clothing
hold our hands and fall in line
oh and I’m never cool

That's based on a poem, if I remember correctly. Beautiful lines. Can't recall the author.NYRexall wrote:You guys are on crack. The lyrics are a bunch of nonsense. Except:

It's ok that the rest of the lyrics don't make sense to you. You're just a bit thick, that's all. They're great regardless, partially because of Eric's delivery.

Re: another soulmate-listen here
Even if Eric is just listing random things about a particular topic, it still makes sense.

Those seems like things that happen in Los Angeles more than they happen in other towns...NYRexall wrote:I know that. I meant: except the couplet from L.A. His lyrics got way better once Polar Bear came along.
Re: another soulmate-listen here
"I was America this morning." is an incredible lyric. Especially deadpanned.
Re: another soulmate-listen here
Yeah, theres a few one liners here and there that stand out from his writing whatever pops into his head style of Decon.

Eric's lyrics on the Deconstruction album are amazing. They don't have to make "sense".
Re: another soulmate-listen here
I listened to the Deconstruction album at the gym last night. After that, I went for a run in a park and listened to One Hot Minute.
I'd like to take back everything I said about Eric's lyrics being nonsense and his delivery being shit. His Deconstruction vocals and words are angel's poetry next to most of Anthony's lyrics and delivery on the OHM stuff. 'Walkabout', 'One Big Mob' and that embarrassing-as-all-fuck 'Melancholy Mechanics' song being the worst offenders.
Deconstruction is far and away my favorite album Dave has played on. His guitar playing absolutely dominates that record. Eric's bass lines on Ritual can't be matched, though. I listened to it in bed last night and it still sounds as majestic as the first time I heard it over 20 years ago. 'Then She Did...' is one of the greatest songs ever.

don't be shittin on OHM .. it's practically a Jane's Addiction record .. better than Strays .. Deconstruction album is pretty good .. if u stab your ear with a nail every time Eric "sings" it's a lot less painful .. i like his "singing" better in Polar Bear .. but the Decon music would have made a great next Jane's Addiction record .. then again so would the PFP material ..

It's weird to me that we just keep going over the same topics over and over and over again. At this point we're almost like ghosts that don't know that they're dead.
Which is OK by me. I like you guys and this is a fine place for a haunting.
I have a question though: are there any other bands that you can think of who have tarnished their legacy as much as Jane's? Or rather, bands that once occupied such a rarefied and untouchable place in music culture, only to fall so utterly and embarrassingly far?
You can talk about the Pixies, but it doesn't compare. You can talk about Misfits, but they were never popular in their original incarnation. You can talk about Stone Temple Pilots, but they're basically assclowns who accidentally made a couple of good records. Who, dammit... who? (No, not the Who — they had a plenty long run before the fall.)
