Did anyone ever see Primus live? Les Claypool should be entertaining. Just heard "My Name is Mud" on local Tampa radio and had forgotten how unique. Might be an acquired taste, but bass is incredible.

Exactly!Juana wrote:At the SXSW show I went to that was 3+ hours long he slayed it.Romeo wrote:trevor ayer wrote:Prince gave up dancing a long time ago and his frontman antics (endless call and response put yer cellphones up etc...) actually detract from the real draw which is his music

HUH?
I saw Prince in 2011. He was dancing, fronting, playing.....
He was CAPTIVATING!
And he plays tons of "medleys" because he has such a vast catalogue of music to choose from, he can. He knows everyone wants to heat "the hits" but he wants to play what he wants to play. He also loved to play covers, like at cochella he played Radiohead's creep and at the Superbowl he played the Foo's Best of you.
Even at 57 (same age as Perry) Prince would play 3 to 3 1\2 hour sets. Where as Perry limps through 90 minutes of the same set we've heard 10000 times.

And the bass IS incredible
Re: switched from being a perry fan to a scott weiland fan
not the mention the drums...one of the best rhythm sections ever imho
Re: switched from being a perry fan to a scott weiland fan
don't leave out Larry Lalonde! One of the most original and talented out there. And weirdest. But weird in a great way
Re: switched from being a perry fan to a scott weiland fan
Perry still wins. Weiland OD'd on a washed up burnout tour in his late 40's. Perry survived Satellite Party 2.0 when teenagers replaced Nuno and it was an awful, best of show that was hardly attended. For that alone Perry wins.
Re: switched from being a perry fan to a scott weiland fan
Totally agree. Haven't seen Primus live since maybe 98 but every time was great, even the 1 show with Brain on drums.kv wrote:not the mention the drums...one of the best rhythm sections ever imho

i loved brain in primus. Very powerful drummer.
Re: switched from being a perry fan to a scott weiland fan
This is what he played last time I saw him (and keep in mind this was in La Zona Rosa (holds <1300 people and less were allowed in as it was a SXSW event) also in a sad twist of fate that was the last time I saw A Tribe Called Quest as they opened the show. RIP both Prince and Phife.Romeo wrote:BTW this was the set list from the last show I was at

I always thought Prince & Page woulda been fun to see together.. ..I loved Prince's funk "Sly Stone" trip...But my favorite Prince was when he went full on psychedelic acid rock on guitar!!!!...He shredded ...As far as comparing Scott to Perry...Scott lifted a lot of Perry'z act and moves....We are all influenced by people...I remember reading STP did photo shoots with Nothing's Shocking blaring in the background ...so that vibe snuck in
peter distefino

Re: switched from being a perry fan to a scott weiland fan
There will never be another like him. He synthesized such an incredible array of Ameican and Anglo influences, was steeped in Midwestern funk (Ohio Players were legit, man), understood the true revelations of the Beatles and Led Zeppelin, shredded the fucking guitar, howled like an animal in heat and crooned like a more passionate Minnie Riperton. Oh, and he played all of the instruments and produced/composed/performed/engineered his first few records and continued to produce the rest even when he started having other musicians contribute.Mescal wrote:I saw em on this tour.Matz wrote:Prince was the best frontman of all time. I was never a big Prince fan, but I was totally blown away by his performance.
Only then I noticed he could really do everything, he could rock out, funk out, play some psychedelic shit then go on and sing some ballads and bring out some hits in the meantime.

Re: switched from being a perry fan to a scott weiland fan
Prince was on an entirely different level than either perry or scott... its downright unfair to even mention him in the context of these two frontmen. he was a superhuman genius, one in a million
still, scott destroyed perry output-wise over the last 15 years.
this is what the guy was recording immediately before his drug death:

Yeah but he was also recording this:
I'm a fan, but Scott hasn't put out anything worth multiple listens since Shangri-La Dee Da.
