I recently had to subtitle a couple of movies that I think deserve a mention.

The original Sweeney Todd, from 1936, is one of the creepiest films I've ever seen. It's not well rated by Rotten Tomatoes and the like, but I thought it deserved a watch, really. There's just too much creepiness to describe here, it does a great job at keeping you on your toes. The main actor is fantastic. I had a look at the trailer for Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd, and it is an embarrassment. The premise and story of the original are really simple, and it's for the best. If you have a chance, give it a go. It's only 65 minutes long anyway. 6/10 for me.

Land of the Minotaur (1976), is one of the worst pieces of trash I've ever had to work with. In terms of story, it's a generic horror flick featuring a few nipples, a hot-shot detective who can't be controlled, young people disappearing, and a weird cult being behind these disappearences. This really is one of those movies that are so bad, that they're good. I laughed out loud in several ocassions while translating this thing. Everything looks so cheap, the entire flick had to be overdubbed and there is no sync whatsoever, the characters are all laughable and nonsensical, and the dialogues are beyond stupid. There's a priest that wants the mystery solved and is almost omniscient, and at one point the detective asks him how does he know all this (which I had been wondering for about an hour by now), and he just goes "I just know." Alright then. Thank you for clearing up that interesting bit of backstory for us. I genuinely believe that whoever wrote the script got bored halfway into the movie. I really mean that: The first 45 minutes take up 2/3 of the script. The last 45 minutes are mostly ghostly voices ("Papa!") being repeated all over, and characters describing what they're going to do or why ("I will climb to that window so that I can block the moonlight!!") It also features a fire-breathing sculpture of a Minotaur and a guy named Baron Corofax. 3/10, if only for the entertainment value of how stupid and not terrifying a horror movie can be.

I'm not sure if Nolan was trying to be too clever? But to try and portray dreams as part of a movie, well that's just impossible. 6.5/10
I always thought the best one was The Prestige, because it had a kind of almost believable magical realism. Memento took a real life strange medical condition and just made it more convoluted. And Inception was overbearing.

He is a great actor, though I don't blame him, those movies made him famous and now he can act in anything he wants.

Yes I have only seen a couple movies that he was in but he was not a good actor.

If he is good in this latest movie good for him. :thumb:

He is...really, I've seen him in different movies, even though I didn't like one at all (David Cronenberg's Maps to the Stars, but to be honest, he was even good in that one). And I don't have a crush on him, so I can be 100% objective :thumb:

Well...I liked Maps to the Stars so I guess we will just have to disagree on this. :wiggle:

I saw Logan Lucky today and I really thought I was going to like it. I heard good things going in.

It was dumb and boring. It was a stupid redneck Oceans 14. Too bad because it has a pretty good cast

Just watched Alien Covenant. What a load of garbage. If they're going to keep making these Alien movies of this shitty caliber, they should just stop.

Just watched Netflix's adaptation of Death Note.

Don't watch it. Regardless of whether you enjoyed the anime or not, this is an awful, awful movie. Unwatchable. 1/10. It's one of those bad movies that make you feel angry. All the characters are shit, unlikeable and unrelatable, they're all stupid as fuck, the plot is convoluted, there's no development... it's just shit.

And if you've never seen the anime... watch it. It's brilliant.

Here’s our first look at Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in forthcoming biopic

Bryan Singer-directed film is set to hit theaters next year

After years of being stuck in developmental hell, Bohemian Rhapsody, the biopic on Queen singer Freddie Mercury, is finally on the way. Mr Robot star Rami Malek is confirmed to play Mercury in the forthcoming film, and today we get our first look at Malek in character. The above photograph was released on what would have been Mercury’s 71st birthday (via EW.com).

Bryan Singer, who has spent the last 15 years consumed with the X-Men cinematic universe, has been tagged to helm Bohemian Rhapsody. He’ll get to direct an impressive cast that also includes Joe Mazzello, Ben Hardy, and Gwilym Lee playing Mercury’s Queen bandmates.

Surviving Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor are serving as the film’s executive producers and musical supervisors. They personally chose Singer to direct the film due to his “extraordinary imagination and style.”

Talk of a Freddie Mercury and Queen biopic has persisted for at least a decade. For years it was believed that Sacha Baron Cohen would play Mercury in a biopic, though he later distanced himself from the film, citing serious clashes with the original band members, who reportedly wanted to film a PG-rated movie which avoided the darker aspects of Mercury’s life. Several alternate versions were later floated, including one starring Sam Whishaw, though none were officially announced until earlier this summer.

Production is set to begin this fall with a release date tagged for December 25th, 2018.

Based on opinions about the script(s) that have been leaked over the past few years, this movie is going to piss off a lot of Queen fans. It does appear to be true Brian May and Roger Taylor who retain controlling interest in the Queen brand do not want to shed any light on the more unsavory aspects of the band and of course, Freddy. Supposedly, it focuses mostly on the late 70's and ends with the bands 1985 Live Aid performance thus completely ignoring Mercury's subsequent illness and eventual death from AIDS. The movie also appears to give a lot of screen time to surviving members Roger Taylor and Brian May while minimizing bassist John Deacon.

As an aside, there's a great story about Queen's Live Aid show - supposedly backstage at Wembly Stadium, Freddy had cornered Bono who had no clue Freddy was seriously hitting on him until someone later explained to him "well, the ARE called Queen - what d'you think?"

I'm watching Cape Fear (1962, not the 1991 De Niro one). I'm impressed with the pacing. Sometimes old movies are difficult to get into at first because they're usually much slower. This is not. The lighting is awesome, too.

I watched Wind River. It was pretty good. While I was watching it I was thinking that the girl in it looked like an Olson twin and I guess she is a sister.

Jamie Lee Curtis Will Return to the Halloween Franchise in 2018
By Jim Vorel | September 15, 2017 | 3:40pm

Well, here’s an announcement that horror fans probably couldn’t have seen coming, considering that the character is technically dead: Jamie Lee Curtis will return to the Halloween franchise as Laurie Strode one last time. The film, which is being produced by Blumhouse and scheduled for an Oct. 19, 2018 release by Universal, just got a lot more interesting. Blumhouse confirmed the casting and return via tweet on Friday.

Image

This is something of a shock, considering that Laurie Strode was killed off in the opening scenes of 2002’s poorly received Halloween: Resurrection, the last of the original Halloween series before the two Rob Zombie-helmed Halloween reboots. But then again, how hard is it really to bring back a character from the dead with “they didn’t really die” in this series? It’s already been done with Strode once before, when it was revealed in Halloween: H20 that she had faked her death after the events of Halloween 2, which more or less nullified the events of Halloween 4, Halloween 5 and Halloween 6. The death of slasher icon Michael Myers was also implied in H20, only to be undone in the opening moments of Resurrection. So who the hell knows? All we know is that we get another slasher with Curtis, and that’s good enough for us.

Also of interest: Given that Michael Myers is the older brother of Laurie Strode, that will officially make Myers a sexagenarian killer, somewhere in his 60s in this film. Perhaps bullets will be a little bit more effective in stopping him, considering his advanced age? It’s a shame that Donald Pleasence is no longer with us to reprise his classic role as the psychiatrist Dr. Loomis, but he would be almost 100 years old if he was still alive.

The still-untitled new Halloween film will be directed by David Gordon Green, the co-creator of Eastbound & Down on HBO and director of films such as The Pineapple Express. The film also features a script co-written by Danny McBride, which was praised by original Halloween director John Carpenter back in February:

“David and Danny both came to my office recently with Jason Blum and shared their vision for the new movie and … WOW. They get it. I think you’re gonna dig it. They blew me away. I might even do the music. Maybe. It could be kind of cool. And you’ll get to see it in theaters on October 19th, 2018.”

Let’s hope that we’ll indeed get Carpenter back in the composer’s chair, if not the director’s chair. Curtis, meanwhile, has continued to parlay her status as a horror icon in recent years, appearing in Scream Queens on Fox. She also places prominently in our list of the “best “final girls in horror film history. Perhaps this final Halloween film will continue to move her up the rankings?
I haven't kept up with the whole Halloween franchise; I've only seen the first one.
