Favourite Post-Punk Bands

I find that a little post-punk goes a long way. It can get pretty cold and bleak, which is fine, for awhile. I love it as an ingredient in music that isn't necessarily completely post-punk. It's one of my favorite ingredients in the Jane's stew.

bauhaus is post punk even though they were around in the 70's during punk much like siouxsie and the banshees...x sometimes called post punk along with television ..fugazi....the cure, jesus mary chain, joy div...it's all over the map

I think it basically means late 70s and 80s alternative rock before Jane's basically invented it.

I have a boxed set called "Left of the Dial: Songs from the 80s Underground" that is basically entirely post-punk, but JA is on there, Ministry, etc. (But also Aztec Camera, Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie, and so on).

Late 70s gothic rock is post punk because it was influenced by the 70s punk aesthetic and sound, but went beyond it to something different.

Even U2 is apparently post-punk.

Post punk really is a nebulous term or category when you get right down to it. I'd say Post-Punk is a label for almost like anything post 1978 - pre 90's as long as there's few if any guitar solos in the songs and a typically sparse, dry production. Many of the bands that at some point early in their career like say, The Cult or Killing Joke quickly evolved or at least became pigeon-holed in other genres like Metal, Industrial, Goth, Hard Rock, etc (in their case). For instance, is the first Pretenders album post-punk? IMO, yes but everything they did after that falls into more traditional rock/power pop.

I'd say both Pretender's 1&2 are "post punk"....then they lost half the band and it was all downhll from there.
