if you liked keyboards in the 80's...
you're gonna like this
saw this norwegian trio in a local museum last weekend and they're a fun band.
they totally have that 80's sound (think duran duran, pat benatar, etc), and they're getting away it! probably because it's unlike other contemporary pop music (I never thought I'd say something like that about 80's keyboard music), but also because they're doing it for the right reasons, I think. unlike some actual 80's shit.
they have some experimental songs with awkward structures, a good drummer, a cute female singer and a funny looking keyboard player.
this could your guilty pleasure. like mine.

Re: if you liked keyboards in the 80's...
i like your recommendation, krakle!
there is nothing wrong with liking pop music when it's done well like these guys. no need to feel guilty.

M83 does 80s keyboard better than anyone. They make it listenable.
Re: if you liked keyboards in the 80's...
the only keyboard stuff in the 80's i ever liked was depeche mode.

I pretty much hated all synth music in the 80s. I thought it sounded so cheesy and couldn't figure out why anyone liked it, save for a handful of tunes. I even had a little Casio synth, and though I liked playing it, I thought it was cheesy as hell. The last few years have seen torrents of 80s synth-inspired music, so I don't know if "unique" is the right word. I think some of it is quite good, and some is boring and miserable trend-following garbage. In any case, it's been so widespread it may just be the definitive trend in hipster-y music for the last half decade, at least. I can tolerate the things some people do with synths these days a lot more. One of my favorite bands of all time, BMSR, is quite synthy indeed.

Sounds like siouxsie and the banshees meets a bit of Cocteau Twins. I wish Cared about electronic music more but I don't, Damn, even though I remix Buddha Chants.

I loved 80's synth, but only if it was done well. I guess Kraftwerk and Jarre were pioneers of two different styles starting in the 70's. They are the two that got me interested during my 'metal' years. Depeche Mode were superb as were bands like Ultravox and Human League. There were too many mediocre synth bands for me, and it all got very samey. One of my mates is in an unsigned 'synth' band in London, and in my opinion they are TERRIBLE. It's like listening to bad 1980's again. They really are 30 years too late but they have a decent enough following and have had some press, so it must strike a chord with some people.

One of my favorite bands and albums. This came in 2001, and it's easily my favorite "80's album".

yeah, I have a BMSR album and like it. also found out about 'Satanstompingcaterpillars' a little while ago, it's pretty okay. will check that washed out album.Jasper wrote:
