Larry’s cassette tapes thread

#1 Post by Mescal » Thu Jan 19, 2017 1:29 pm

Ok, so it’s been over a year since I gave Larry some mix tapes.

I thought it would be a good idea, but a bit pointless since the included walkman didn’t work.

But that’s not the point.

The point was making someone actually listen to music like in the old days. You know, not forwarding the tape in your walkman since that would eat the batteries, so you even had to listen to the songs you didn’t like. And in the end you would learn to love. Like I didn’t like Summertime rolls in the beginning.

Anyway, since I have to go with the times, I’ll just post youtube links to the songs on the tapes, so, Larry, you can actually hear them.

With that, if any of you have a few minutes to spare every day, you can also have a listen, and you know, comment on the music, which might be a fun thing to do ...

Tape 1: WitLof From Belgium: (That’s a pun)

Song nr 1: Wizards Of Ooze - Fuzzball

Acid Jazz. From Antwerp I think. Had an incredible live reputation. Seen em once, but can’t remember much of it

Song nr2: Vaya Con Dios - Don't Cry For Louie

Dani Klein has the most incredible voice. It's the song you want to hear in a bar at 5 o clock in the morning, being drunk and slightly melancholic

Mescal, keep posting these, they're ace. I love the acid jazz track. It's very much of that era.

Yes, please! I have the tapes, but obviously this makes it so much accessible. I promise I'll listen and review each and every one of them.

I was planning to :)

I started the thread, so I'm gonna go through with it. One song each day (or I'll try)

So, all the songs on this first tape are from Belgian bands/artists.

Second tape will be Afrodelicatessen - I'm on an afro trip lately. Lots of excellent music to be discovered! Just hope all the tracks will be on youtube, since they were all sourced from original vinyls/

Third tape will be (hopefully) some lesser known tracks by international artists

Song nr 3: Irish Coffee - Masterpiece

Typical 70's rock in the Purple/Sabbath vein. Pretty good though imo.

They hailed from Aalst, the city where my wife teaches (trivia)

Their sole lp is very collectible and one of the most sought after Belgian records

An original copy will set you back 1000 + €

Song Nr 4: Plus - Gimme some more of that

Back to the Jazz/fusion.

Plus were a pretty obscure band that made one really good (imo) album.

Same musicians as on the mythical Placebo (not Brian Molko) albums. Marc Moulin, Placebo's band leader, is seen as the grandfather of the fusion. The first one who started to mix jazz with other styles (rock/funk/moog synths etc); but more on Placebo later. There was something boiling in Belgium in the beginning of the 70's. Musicians from different bands playing with one another etc ...

Song nr 5: Madensuyu - Time

A little bit bit more ’modern’

Saw this band opening for, I think, Motorpsycho.

Motorpsycho pretty much sucked, but these guys were great. Very powerfull sound, and it’s just a drummer and a guitarist/singer.

Was pretty much blown away by their set and bought their record. Filed it and never listened to it really.

Dug it out out a few years later thinking, hmmm well, I bought this and never really listened to this.

When I heard this song I was blown away again.

Song nr 6: Jo Lemaire & Flouze - Je suis venue te dire que je m'en vais

Synth pop at its finest. Very haunting cover of a Serge Gainsbourg original.

Simple and beautifull

Song nr 7: TC Matic - Ugh Ugh

Back to the 80's.

Tc Matic were the most ecclectic/avant garde/interesting to come out of Belgium in the 80's.

Fronted by a blues singer, with a rock guitarist, a funk bass player, a reggae drummer and a piano player.

They sure had their own sound.

The singer, Arno, went on to become one of Belgian's best known singers/solo artists. The guitar player, Jean Marie Aerts, is a famous session player and producer.

Song nr 8: Placebo - Balek

Obviously not the Brian Molko Placebo.

Killer, killer track! So turn up your stereo's.

Must be one of the most famous non famous Belgian bands. Desired by music lovers and collectors all over the world. And right they are.

Great musicianship, great songwriting. And as said earlier, Marc Moulin (Placebo's ringleader) is the founding father of jazz fusion.

Kirk Degiorgio (musician and producer, and inspirator of the reissue at the end of the '90's of the three Placebo albums) saying: "it was clear this wasn't one of those rare but over-rated funk albums with just one or two killer tracks, this was something special. It had a highly polished, unique and strangely modern sound that had depth and intelligence. It was part street, part studio wizardry and above all it was funky as hell! ... A funk album with 70's cop show horn arrangements, breaks and hip hop-style beats, killer Fender Rhodes solos and synthesisers, all recorded in Brussels by a bunch of hitherto unknown white dudes. How could I resist?".

But not leaving you without this little beauty:

Song Nr 9: Open Sky Unit - Sunshine Star

Another obscure Belgian jazz combo.

And it's a man singing!
