Wynton Marsalis

#1 Post by Larry B. » Fri Mar 06, 2015 6:08 am

He's coming to Santiago in a couple of weeks. Today, I was hired to be his translator for his press conference. Quite stoked, as he is one of those names that most (if not all) people in the jazz world has heard of.

Without question one of the most important names in Jazz. A giant.

Be interested to hear what he was like. I've heard not such great things.

Only thing that bugs me about him, is he's purist attitude towards jazz. Anything after 1960 seems to be unacceptable to him. Other than that, great player and important guy.

Absofuckinpositively!

Some of my best memories of live music come from a dingy, small, crowded, stinky (scotch and smoke), and VERY dark club here in LA called The Baked Potato.....just lost a more detailed post I am too lazy to write again, but save to say.....Don Randi, the owner (and house band leader of Don Randi and Quest) is a great musician and has played with S. Vaughn, Zappa, Brian Wilson, Quincy, and many others. The BP has had a long list of Jazz greats come and go....Jazz, for me is a real time and most sincere musical expression of defiance, love, love lost, and resiliency.....and HIGHLY proficient musicians. In short, badass.

Yeah, it's pretty fun really. I'm not "super stoked", because it's been quite a while since I left behind the stage of my life when I could've gone "omg omg omg I'm gonna meet this legend #supernervous #hetravelsinfirstclass", but I take it as some sort of recognition that I did alright in my previous interpreting jobs.

I do enjoy his music, by the way. I'm not too fond of the fact that he criticizes fusion or other styles, but I wouldn't skip him if he came up on shuffle.

Man, this went great. Although he seemed to be a right-wing fella, he was very warm and close. He joked around with me, which was nice - especially after the director of the Theater suggested that I should be either standing throughout the whole press conference (1 hour) or SAT ON THE FLOOR BEHIND MARSALIS. Fucking moron. I said "yeah, I should be behind Marsalis, but on a chair..." so they got me a chair.

Here's one of the many photos I had to avoid

(You can see a black chair behind the girl on the white shirt. That's where I finally sat to my job.)

Marsalis also asked his tour manager (nice fella as well) to hook me up with a couple of tickets for tonight, so I'll be there. Really cool.

Tomorrow I'll be translating a brass master-class, which I think will be challenging.
