Afghan Whigs is back first new album in 16 years

#1 Post by janesbiggestfan » Mon Jan 27, 2014 9:42 am

My third all time favorite other than Jane's and RHCP. Actually when I think of it, it's the one band out of the three which still hasn't dissapointed me.

Dulli had his low point (he gained 100+ kgs at one point), but now he's back and he still sings great.

This is really, really exciting news. Dulli is amazing, and the Whigs are one of the few bands that still pushes that dangerous chaos on stage that Jane's used to have...

I am partial to Gentlemen
but Congregation is also spectacular.
They have a "greatest hits" out, too: Unbreakable

I posted in the streaming thread about the new record. It's good, but not great. Without the original guitarist, the record sounds like a solid Twilight Singers album rather than a vintage Whigs one.

The original guitarist was the best part of this band. They were fuckin awesome.

Well they came back strong as fuck....

Dulli overcame Perry in my book as the most influential musician for me. I remember so many years back listening to Black Love and it being the only other thing outside of Ritual and Nothing Shocking to hit me so completely. In hindsight I consider it the best album Ive ever heard, sort of like the Wall is to many people this foundational experience. Funny because Black love is also a concept album and to fully experience it you have to have the physical cd or album and listen along with the booklet with the beautiful photos and read all the lyrics.

And now this new album... clearly its not up to the level of Black Love, I guess nothing ever will... But it is fucking strong.
40 minutes, short and sweet. Dulli has refined himself. You can notice the lack of Mccollum but its still very strong and Dulli basically is Whigs anyway.

I have a theory that he has avoided hitting the wall creatively compared to Perry because he's essentially a brooding loner. He seems very smooth in interviews and gigs but he spends a lot of time alone. Also though he plowed through unlimited number of women he never married and settled down. I think the lack of a ballbusting wife and the lack of a group of shallow bullshit hollywood friends, hangers on and yes men is what kept Dulli sharp and present as opposed to Perry turning into this fake teeth, nosejob zombie.

Jesus even writing this I feel anger towards what Jane's has become and how they blew their potential to bo so much more than they have been.

Ye it seems he's become fat again but at least he has his creativity intact and perry is completely out of it despite having his sixpack abs intact.

Saw them last monday in Amsterdam. They put one one hell of a show! Dulli may have gained a liite weight but he's still a great singer and wonderful entertainer.
Like Janesbiggestfan already mentioned, he's basically everything that Perry isn't these days.
