Thought there was a thread already on these.....couldn't find it. I really enjoyed this one and I am very interested in his music. His voice was like an instrument....just striking. Gonna explore more.

Found this on Netflix last night. TP generally bores me to tears, but I got swept up in the narrative. 4 hour doc flew by.....TP is as true to music as anyone I know. Bogdanovich directs.

So, I listened to Chicago a lot when I was just a kid. As I got older I knew Kath was revered by musicians far and wide, but I never knew Hendrix was in awe, once calling him the best he'd ever seen. High praise....watched this last night on Amazon Prime. Great doc. Kath's solo on 25 or 6 to 4 is disgusting.

Debbie Harry, Alice Cooper and more appear in the trailer for Suzi Q, a new film about pioneering female rock star Suzi Quatro, out this summer.

Directed by Liam Firmager, the documentary chronicles Quatro’s career, from her beginnings in Detroit to her breakthrough in 1973. “She was the first, and broke the ice and kicked the doors for us gals,” Cherie Currie says in the opening of the clip. “If people have overlooked her, that’s their fault.”

“A lot of girls had tried to be Suzi Quatro,” Cooper notes. “But when it’s in the DNA, you can’t fake that.” Adds Harry: “This woman has so much energy, so much talent. She could have done anything.”

The film also stars Joan Jett, Tina Weymouth, the GoGo’s Kathy Valentine, L7’s Donita Sparks and Henry Winkler — whom Quatro played opposite in Happy Days as Leather Tuscadero.

“Over the four-plus years making the film, the idea that Suzi’s status had been forgotten in the USA slowly dawned on us — because in the rest of the world everyone knows that she is the first and one of the most important trailblazers in rock and roll,” producer Tait Brady said in a statement. “And that then influenced the direction the film took — it became our mission to redress history.”

Peter Jackson's documentary, Beatles:Get Back

The Beatles: Get Back, Peter Jackson’s documentary about the making of Let It Be, was delayed by the pandemic, so he and the studio have released a montage of about four minutes of the film as a sneak peek. The film, constructed from 55+ hours of largely unseen footage and 140 hours of audio recordings, seeks to portray the making of the band’s final studio album in a better light than previous accounts. The project has the support of Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono, and Olivia Harrison and will out in August 2021. (via ted gioia)

Watched the Bee Gees doc last night. Was actually really moved. I was born in '70, so they were the soundtrack to my early life i.e. hearing them played at home or on the radio. Was surprised at how long they'd been around--they had multiple lives--had a Beatles-esque run in the 60s, early 70s, and then the Saturday Night Fever phenom. An interesting aside was a comment a interviewee shared about a White Sox game where fans could bring "disco" records to burn, but were in fact just bringing a range of Black music. HIs point being--the disco sucks thing was basically just racism (and homophobia) rearing its head as one of the lead voices in that "movement" was a white dude who today would likely be categorized as an incel--fans rushed the field the night they had the record burning. Worth watching for that historical side note.

And....I just finished the first season of the New Order/Joy Division podcast, which is stellar, and I highly recommend.

Steve Dahl the radio dj in that disco demolition is still on the air in Chicago with his podcast. I never really listened to him because there were a lot of options
for talk radio in the mid to late 80's and 90's. Then Howard got syndicated and sports radio became a thing. Dahl got fired because the radio station he was working
at changed formats from rock to disco. White Sox offered .98 cents to see a double header if you brought a disco record. The Loop radio station was 97.9.

Good recommendation. Watched this last night. I wish there had been a bit of information on what happened to their parent through the years of success and ultimate tragedy though.

So, I have always been a bit embarrassed by my lack of appreciation for the Beatles...like some sort of musical sociopath. I like them, but I'm not moved by them, and tbh I have a pretty healthy disdain for Ringo's parts. But, I understand and appreciate their impact and social consequence. Just finished the first McCartney 321 with Rick Rubin. Pretty powerful stuff.

Tastes are tastes...I love Ringo's parts because as a drummer they fuck with my head...you may not be aware he sounds strange because he plays strange....he is a converted left hander on a right hand kit..his fills are LRLR..left lead on most things...it sounds, well like Ringo, that's why he sounds so different...do some fills with left lead it just feels and sounds so diff as you are accenting at a different time...

If you knew all this my bad...pretty common stuff....maybe this will catch the eye of someone who didn't know

Didn't know, but LRR and RLL would sound the same in a fill (or practicing) if played in time, no? For me, though I am right frustratingly right dominant, going LRR is a practice tool to attempt to equalize.

I've had this discussion with many players and I still stand by my anti-Ringo stance, but I do understand that the production on Beatles drums go a long way in my disdain. Funny, in the doc I mentioned they played Back in the USSR and I was thinking great job, Ringo. Turns out it was McCartney .

I am the same with the Eagles. I really despise them, but that dead sound on drums drives me nuts.

I very highly recommend Soundbreaking.

An 8 part music documentary that gives you an insight of the evolution of (recorded) music. Very interesting, even for non-musicians.

High profile musicians and producers are being interviewed (George Martin, Marc Ronson, Elton John, Roger Waters, Questlove, Rza etc etc) So not some third tier music journalist giving his point of view of how music works. .
