Now Playing...

exactly, where's the attraction..
Re: Now Playing...
Welp, it is a music thread and all. So...the music? And it's clearly a female songer, so you could extrapolate from there.Matz wrote: exactly, where's the attraction..
Regardless, I know there's a severe lack of synth pop love on this board which is unfortunate.
The debute album by Chvrches comes out in 3 days and it's damn good. They're a Scottish band and are getting a decent amount of press and attenion right now preceding it's release. Good for them.
Re: Now Playing...
I'll give it some more spins, maybe it'll grow on me
Re: Now Playing...
That's cool. I realize synth pop isn't for everyone. For me, as a child of the 80s', I suppose it evokes a nostalgiac feeling.Matz wrote:I'll give it some more spins, maybe it'll grow on me
There was a huge synthpop rebirth (based primarily out of NY) in the early 00's with bands like Soviet, Ladytron and Fischerspooner that was exciting for me, but it died out rather quickly.
In the past 2-3 years it's once again made a huge comeback to the extent that I have more bands to delve in to than I can even keep up with. It's like being a kid in a candy store.
The Sound of Arrows released the best synth pop album in a decade in 2011, and it is reminiscent and rivals the better works of bands like Pet Shop Boys or even New Order.
Most of the current wave of bands are coming out of europe, much like it was in the 80's.
I can't get enough. Other than the "alternative" wave of the late eighties and early nineties (Pixies, Dino, Janes) there is no better wave of music (for me) than what came a few years earlier with the synth/new romantic/post punk wave of bands ranging from Talking Heads to Depeche Mode and all associated acts.

Re: Now Playing...
This is kind of old news and maybe deserved it's own thread, but today I happened to catch an article about last month's Melvins show that abruptly ended because a guy threw a water bottle hitting guitarist "King Buzzo" square in the chest resulting in the band walking off stage and ending the show. According to the article, the person who threw the bottle or cup was a member of a local band who was peaking on 'shrooms - the account is pretty funny:

The clip is amusing too:

I really like this song.
Re: Now Playing...
as a child of the 70's fuck the 80's synth pop (well 95% of it anyway) lol if i never hear the pet shop boys again it will be too soon...and if that band didn't have a cute young girl singer you wouldn't give two shits...imhohokahey wrote:That's cool. Re: Now Playing...
Played Bro Hymn tonight along with a couple other covers at a jam session at the bar so now listening to a shit load of Pennywise
Re: Now Playing...
Pretty epic song. Sonically huge. Reminds me of "Iris" a little. Especially the last minute or so. The piano mimicking Navarro's guitar tone.
Re: Now Playing...
I'm listening to the album Days Are Gone by Haim. It's growing on me because it's different. It's very 'musically' 80's in places with the old synth effects, yet is very modern in its arrangement.

That sounds really good, I'll download the album nowBandit72 wrote:I'm listening to the album Days Are Gone by Haim. It's growing on me because it's different. It's very 'musically' 80's in places with the old synth effects, yet is very modern in its arrangement.

It's pretty wild to me how popular the various 80's sounds are becoming again. It started in the early 00's out of NYC with a huge synth boom and bands apeing the Joy Division sound. That died pretty quickly though. 10 years later and it's come back even bigger with bands adopting a much broader range of "80's" sounds.
Haim isn't necessarily my favorite but I like what they're doing quite a bit.

Yes, I have a friend who's been in a band for a few years and they have a very distinctive 80's sound. Personally I think they are terrible, even though they have tried to be clever with the use of synths. Haim seem to have that classic "Christ, I'm sure I heard that sample in a Gloria Estefan track" type feel to them. And they are different enough with their vocal style too. It's refreshing.hokahey wrote:It's pretty wild to me how popular the various 80's sounds are becoming again. This is my mates band. They have quite a bit of a friend following, but their 80's style doesn't do it for me at all.

I'm not a huge McCartney fan but it's impressive he can put a song like this together in his age, it's way better than a lot of Beatles songs
