It could be just as simple as not wanting to go on a long tour and being away from his wife for another year. I know that is less rock in roll but i bet that could be it. I am sure there isn't the money to sling his wife around the world with him. He isn't Perry or Trent in that regard. What can i say i am a romantic. and i think of things like that.

I'm with Casey on this one. Eric's recent album is the first thing he's done that I haven't enjoyed at all, and now he's pussying out on being in Nine Inch fucking Nails to continue doing stuff like that? Yeah, I'm bummed. But I get it. All the best to him.

the music isn't very technical, I doubt that's the reason. When he auditioned for Metallica he was way in over his head in that regard thoughCaseyContrarian wrote:
Maybe Eric ISN'T technically up for it. Lord knows there's nothing he's recorded in this latest batch of songs that impresses me musically or sonically.

Sonny was but one player of many in the creating a playground for the community. The only time I've met anyone from these boards was organized on one-percent.com or aintnoright.com.
He, for a time, ran the only place to visit. But let's maintain some perspective.
At the end of the day, he came here preaching fire and brimstone, doom and gloom apocalyptic visions of the future because he wanted to believe we couldn't survive without him, never realizing how much easier we'd all get along without his suffocating need to be in control of the community.

No one's saying Sonny was perfect...in terms of people turning on him or however you wanna look at it, I totally get it...he DID nit pick on certain things/people, etc...I was there for the same 10+ years as everyone else and witnessed it with a few years now to look back on it for what it was...so ummmm yeah "Christ complex"...
I appreciated his perspective...I appreciated him putting the money up to host the site (as I do you and creep for your time and effort)...I didn't/don't always appreciate the shit people stir up about him...and that's pretty much it...and yes he was one guy and CLEARLY this group exists just fine without him...but again personally I think people appreciate what we have here more at least in part by what happened with xiola...you can disagree, or you can tell me I think Sonny is Jesus and be funny about it, and either way it doesn't matter very much...

I think it's accurate we appreciate it here more because what happened with Xiola, because we dont live under constant fear of a mental breakdown ending the site. So yes, agreed.
And Sonny got no more shit than he dished out, so I have no sympathy. He was insufferable to me when I was trying to get a site off the ground. Acted much like he did when Creep and I started this one, except worse. Had I been older/more mature I would have understood his motivations and pettiness and taken it more in stride. At the time, as a 23 year old kid, I took a lot of offense and was hurt by his constant fuckery.
So fuck him. He's no saint.
Anyone feeling sorry for him was probably in his little approved inner circle and never dealt head on with his insanity.
Re: Eric leaves NIN
Yep, so maybe Eric was only going to be featured on certain songs or something. Also Robin can play bass too. But I think Trent's got big ideas for this and its more than just a cash grab. One of the things I like about Trent, is the reinvention from TDS to The Fragile, I haven't always liked his output but I do like that he is willing to take creative risks.thoreau wrote:That looks like Josh Eustis, who's already in the lineup.Pandemonium wrote:So Reznor losses his bass player and brings back Robin Finck on 2nd guitar? I've been listening to The Fragile a lot lately...it's currently blowing my mind. A very nice double album, and I'm not a huge NIN guy, either.Juana wrote:One of the things I like about Trent, is the reinvention from TDS to The Fragile.

As am I. I got burnt out on it after constant spins when it came out, and revisiting it all these years later is nice. I saw them a few times on that tour, the last of their great ones IMO.Kajicat wrote:I've been listening to The Fragile a lot lately.
The Fragile is bittersweet for me. A great album, but I also hear the beginning of the end of the juggernaut that was NIN.
A song like "Where is Everybody" with it's Dr Seuss like lyrics and Trent's more grown up vocals was always my least favorite song on it, and little did I know it would signal how much of his later work would sound. In fact, much of the "Right" half of the album is mediocre.
But "Left" is a near masterpiece on par with his past works.
On a related note - for my money, seeing Pinion in to Somewhat Damaged is the best possible NIN opener. What an absolutely brutal song live.
La Mer and The Great Below are also stunning live. At least on the Fragility Tour.

Yeah, I agree on all counts regarding that tour. Strangely, one of the highlights of the show I saw was the instrumental "Complications."hokahey wrote:As am I. Re: Eric leaves NIN
for the record, while i'm totally juiced that my use of the word 'rotund' started such a spirited debate about sonny, i only used it to make fun of someone - anyone - in our little community, and not to pile on our former fuhrer in particular. i'm quite fond of this imperfect bunch and proud to be a member. we make me laugh. and we are a rarity in a world where it seems that nearly anyone famous has a web following in the millions. ja is an important piece of musical history in the rock era, and over 20 years after it had its last relevant moment, it can still get paid very handsomely to play 2n or 3d bill on major festivals, and its web following is about 50 people - us. nobody else gives a shit. so each of us is special and of each of us, myself very definitely included, it makes my day to poke some fun at. because we make me laugh. and i hope we keep doing so.
as for sonny, he was there from the beginning in the web bunch and, for all his faults, he sure as shit did antagonize the artist he was basically the webmaster for, so that was fun. i recall him from day 1 along with about five or six others, most of whom are no longer here, from the mailist on which i first started sharing jane's tales and cassettes over the internet. sonny; feek; dom [post a link to your photobooth little unicorn gift to navarro if you dare]; thestallion [had a different name that i don't remember but changed it to thestallion because he also loved ween]; and some whose names i can't pull out of the gaping old asshole that is my memory - awesome young dude with awesome radical lefty politics from columbus ohio but who was living, i think, around detroit going to college at eastern michigan; mr somediverswhistle, with whom i traded many cassettes; some cool New Yorkers.
one more point, regarding the the bag of feces that these dicks perry and eric dropped on us by bailing rather than writing new music with trent reznor at the controls, never forget that they fucked up in 1997 as well. imagine for a moment if they could have put 1.0 back for relapse. they were still all capable of great things then, far more than they necessarily were in 2009, and perry and eric making amends to make music in 1997 could have been far more than the best of what might have come of ninja - a one off tour and album by guys who, by then, had sullied themselves with stuff like 'i like 'em big' and 'garbage morrisette' and 'christina aguilera and strippers'. but their dickishness stopped it from happening.

The great thing about that record, I have found, is my ability to listen to it WAY too much, get burned out, then listen to it again 2-3 years later and hear new things going on that I never noticed before.hokahey wrote:As am I. I remember reading in an article a long time ago that there were songs that had upwards of 120 tracks of stuff going on, which is absolutely ridiculous.
I wish he would put that kind of obsessive work into the soundscapes these days, but I understand how it could be tedious to make every album that way.

This sucks hard. I was looking forward to seeing Trent and Eric play together. I get Eric's perspective, but in the cases of Trent and even Perry on a different level, why not stick it out and see what comes of it?
