Duff's book was pretty cool. Obviously Whores is a great read. Enter Night is pretty good, it's about Metallica. The Evolution of a Cro Mag is really good. I don't like the Cro Mags, but John Joseph's life was pretty fucked up and the stories are crazy. Our Band Could Be Your Life is really great, each chapter is about a 30 page bio on a different band. It covers The Butthole Surfers, Black Flag, Bad Brains, Minutemen, Dinosaur Jr, and a bunch more.

i thought this book was sort of interesting. it's about basically being a one hit wonder (semisonic - closing time) told by the drummer and what they went through to get a deal and what happened after the success. you can get a used copy for $4

the keith richards autobio is great
'scuse me while i kiss the sky'; an early bio of hendrix is a good read
although mainly a comedian, the kinison book by his brother ('brother sam') is also good & covers a lot of bits w/rock musicians at the time...

I haven't read it yet, but the new bio on Mick Jagger interests me.

Another excellent book from a few years ago is Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon--And the Journey of a Generation

I learned a lot from this book. For example, I had no idea the vast number of songs Carol King had written before age 21 when she was one of the writers at the Brill Building.

I recently have read the Slash book, Duff's book, Keith Richard's book, pieces of Ozzy's book, Anthony Kiedis Scar Tissue and yeah Heroin Diaries by Nikki Sixx...Nikki's got the best imo hands...Its pretty much the stuff going on as it happened, stuff he wrote in notebooks and definitely a bugged out read...Duff's book is ok...I like Slash's book too, but I find it hard to believe he can personally remember all that shit himself...Kiedis was welllllll...as much as I know people here don't like him I don't think they'd like the book...he definitely did some dumb shit...I couldn't make it thru all of Keith Richard's book...the audiobook is cooler cause the guy that narrates sounds like him reading it...

hats off to the guys that got through the Richards book, it's a serious size brick. I did enjoy the Kiedis book. He's had a wild life and the relationship he had with his dad back then was interesting to hear about

this.

Best book I have read in a long time.

I also just finished Duff's book. Good read. He's a good writer. I want to get Johnny Ramone's autobio "Commando". Even though Johnny was the dick of the group.
I'm also in the middle of "I slept with Joey Ramone" by Mickey Leigh his brother

Of all the rockers I've followed, duff seems like the nicest and brightest of them all

what I liked about his book was he never made it seem like oh I'm such a rockstar. Look at me so drunk Or blaming fame for his addictions. He told it like it was, never making excuses. He seems more at ease being in a little 4 piece punk band in small venue than a larger than life, over production rock band playing for a million people in South America.

I've met Duff twice in NYC over the years & he's always very genuine. So one time a few years ago I was in Vegas at the Hard Rock, duff was there coming from the Starbucks near the casino and he actually stopped by to say "hey" to me and because he remembered I was from NY. I still have that photo somewhere of me, my friend & Duff with ice coffee in his hand towering over the two shorties

I'll second recommendations on Keith Richards' "Life" and the Motley Crue bio "The Dirt" and Anthony Kiedis' "Scar Rissue" which are also good reads.

Back to duff, I was floored, then impressed when he identified by name and mourned the deaths of the fans at the gnr show. So many just refer to the deceased as 'fans'.

Thanks for the recs everyone. I think I'm on to the smith or punk doc now.

Well, there are quite a few out there. Personally, I have read this one:

Strange Fascination: David Bowie: The Definitive Story
by David Buckley

I enjoyed it...very informative. Also some excellent interviews with people who have been assocated with Bowie.

The next one is highly recommended and considered to be the best bio. It's on my list to read.

The Complete David Bowie
by Nicholas Pegg

One more that's supposed to be good: David Bowie: Starman
by Paul Trynka

 Just thinking about Whores, which was the laziest piecce of shit I have ever labored though. I remember finishing and it felt like I hadn't finished anything.

A real, substantive Jane's bio is sorely needed.....

The Hard Rock comic was pretty substantive, if exaggerated. The real "JA" stories seem to all fall within the three years of 85-87, and then I guess some stuff during Lolla 91. They're really not a very interesting band once you know that stuff.
