Dave's Influence on Your Guitar Playing?

#1 Post by zdilla » Wed Jun 06, 2012 3:20 pm

i've been playing a lot of guitar and feel that Dave is a huge influence on my playing especially when it comes to open chord ringing, arpeggio's, and the way i solo up and down the neck.

I've also found "Rhimorse' on you tube. and have come to the realization that Dave's playing 'is' very simplistic. it has so much feeling.

But it is interesting because no one can tab a jane's addiction song. it's kind of impossible . how do you tab a style or a feeling of playing?

your thoughts on dave and your playing?

your crazy dilla

Dave really has no influence on my playing but his influences however do have some on my playing.

More the tone and effects he's used to get his sound from the classic JA albums than his actual playing. I remember buying his Star Licks vhs tape around '97 and spending a few evenings watching it trying to replicate what he's playing.

Not that I can play for fuck all.

I know its fun to plays daves shit and try to duplicate that sweet sound he has, people been trying for years...
but your solos are never gonna sound exactly like his, and its better that way, be original...

I agree. I came to that conclusion too late unfortunately. I've picked up quite a few things from Dave, like my love for wah wah and delays and other type of effects. I, like Zdilla, really like the open string chords as well. ....and the ebow of course which I used today!

ahhh my friend lent me his tiny marshal practice amp.

i was just playing my lefty american strat to stairway of heaven. i havent' had an amp for so long and have predominantly been playing my acousitc. playing acoustic makes you a lot better. i am just learning how to phrase my solos' with hammer ons , pulloffs and bends. it has took me 10 yrs. to begin to understand this!

hopefully i will open mic next week at the coffee shop. thinkin' of playing 'will to death'. ill bring my electric .fuck it!! maybe ill play city song or slow divers. but i can't sing. i must. then ill move out to cali join a band like jim morrisson and marry larry b.

i've been thinkin about my mortality lately. i am getting something checked by the doctor and am a little scared. im turning 30 on June 8th . i better gig tomorrow before i die. and KV has made me decide to quit painting. kv is not my friend.

i feel sooo much anxiety , that i have nothing to lose. only until the Time comes to rest.

all my practice has paid off!!

Bub, we all die, that's a certainty. The question is when and how.... and you should be too busy living to worry about it.

Better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the public and have no self.

That colourful remark sure was a stroke of genius.

Dave's influence on me is pretty vague... I prefer to play by feel, playing sounds I like, rather than worrying about technical perfection. I always warm up with the Up The Beach intro, and I will never get it to sound like Dave.

I'm more of a singer but I play some guitar as well. My biggest influences tend to be Dave, Kim Thayil, and Billy Corgan when it comes to the riffs I come up with. Dave's "ballad" sound (think Then She Did) in particular.
