Best new bands - post 2000 (or post 9/11)

#1 Post by Hype » Thu May 17, 2012 12:47 pm

The digression in another thread led me to think that maybe it would be fun to take up bman's challenge to name some great bands that have come up in the last decade or so.

It could be for a great album, or a great live show, or just overall. The idea is to avoid obvious/old bands, but if there's one that was releasing music pre-2000 but didn't really make something good until post-2000 that's fine. The idea is to show that the last 10 years haven't sucked as bad as bman thinks.

Post Youtube links if possible.

I can think of a bunch of stuff off the top of my head.

1. The Mars Volta (first album especially)

2. The Music (first album especially)

3. Autolux (first album too... hey a pattern... also there was/is a guy who used to post here named after these guys)

4. Yeah Yeah Yeahs (at first, I didn't get these guys... but Karen O's become a force majeur... PJ Harvey-esque)

5. Arcade Fire (they can be hit or miss, but they were undoubtedly fresh when they first came out and the second album was alright)

6. Death From Above 1979 (again, not my favourite thing ever, but I've seen them live and they destroy... it's fucking LOUD)

7. Interpol (blatant Joy Division/Tragically Hip rip-off, but they make some interesting sounds anyway)

8. Muse (at first people said: wtf... radiohead? But I think that was misleading -- they've got a diverse palette)

9. Grinderman (okay, this has Nick Cave in it, but it counts... it was a band formed in the 2000s)

10. Gogol Bordello (you knew I had to include them)

11. Voltaire (post-modernist self-referential humour-Goth... really great live shows)

12. DeVotchka (amazing band, here's a cover of a Siouxsie and the Banshees song that I think is better than the original)

13. Johnny Hollow (another Goth band... but they're really interesting)

14. Dresden Dolls (holy shit I almost forgot everything by Amanda Palmer! Formed in 2000)

I could go on. These were just songs/albums from bands formed in the last decade. I ignored the fact that... fucking KID A came out in 2000 (okay that's 12 years ago... but... Radiohead's newer music is also good, if you're into that...)

Name it anyway! Tastes can be broadened. :yikes:

I don't think it has to be music anyone else *would* like... but how can you know what you'll like if you haven't heard it?

I'm living in Kingston right now. They just renamed part of Barrack Street: "The Tragically Hip Way" which makes me laugh because it's the street I head down to get booze and food. But yeah, I'm sure they haven't but the dude's voice sometimes sounds like Gord's.

Makes me laugh so much.

You lost me with Gogel Bordello! AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL stuff! IMO of course.

I never once said there hasn't been good music in the last 10 years. My ipod is filled with Bands I barely even know the names of. I buy so many songs off Itunes from bands I hear on http://www.wfmu.org. My original statement is that the world is differnent now than it was 25 years ago. Teenagers have like 100 x's more media outlets than we did. There isn't a shared cultural aspect to music like there once was. And there will never be another movement like the one that occurred in the late 80's. Society got stale. what do you want.

Great thread. I've discovered some new music here, both that I like and dislike. I think it's a good thing to be well-informed. I don't listen to radio at all. I get all my music (old and new) from the Internet, I enjoy reading reviews, checking out associated acts, etc.

This is music post-2000 that I really like and listen to daily:

Regina Spektor: amazing songwriter boasting an exquisitely unique voice. her skills are ridiculous. most of her lyrics have some sort of urban romanticism that I surprisingly enjoy. went to see her live and she fucking delivers.

Rufus Wainwright: another genius songwriter. chamber-pop like. I'd love to see him and Regina perform in the same night. most of his arrangements are beyond great and I share his passion for singing long notes. I'm still trying to figure out how the fuck I got to know him.

Animal Collective: my sister told me about them long ago, but I thought they were some snob shit. when Merriweather Post Pavillion came out, a friend told me I should definitely check out that album. he couldn't have been more right. to me, it's chronologically the 3rd best album in the history of mankind. so many indescribably genius moments i couldn't even start naming them. I still think their previous works are snob and shitty.

Panda Bear: one of the members of Animal Collective. most of his latest stuff breaks my heart. it's just too sweet. his ideas on harmonies, the rhythm of his melodies and his delay are delicious. I find his long vowels absolutely fascinating.

Avey Tare: another member of Animal Collective. darker than Panda Bear, just as hypnotic. his music strikes me as intriguing and somewhat haunting, while still being sweet. at points i can't understand squat of what he's singing about, but his voice still somehow manages to reach me as a separate music instrument.

Fleet Foxes: a lovely first album. apparently simple, but with very complex harmonies and perfect performances. very modal, which I love. I didn't enjoy their 2nd album as much as the 1st, but I would consider their 1st a 'must listen.'

Gepe: local artist. he combines Chilean folklore with some sort of urban-pop flavor and some electronics here and there. He opened doors for a 'new generation' of talented young local artists (some more talented than others, that's for sure.) some of his songs are very, very good.

עידן רייכל (Idan Raichel): a great discovery of this (Southern) summer. I'm not an expert on his works nor I like a lot of his songs, but he has already written one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in Spanish. a brilliant songwriter.

Skrillex: I have listened to just one of his albums (to see what all the fuss was about) and I didn't really like it; however, I thought the single that I'm posting was genius. I can definitely see what things could be appealing about his material. great handling of sound textures and perfectly-timed frequencies and breaks.

I like the diversity of stuff being posted, and the opposition to some of it (the fact that bman likes how JA sounds now, and doesn't like Gogol Bordello kinda makes me think I'm onto something... it also makes me think bman probably doesn't like punk or folk music.) But it shows that music is actually more alive than ever -- you have a huge choice. There are more genres now than there were in the 80s.

It's possible. I'm sure I probably posted a thread about him or a cd in "now playing". You should also check out his sister Martha.

I like some of the stuff posted here a lot fx Arcade fire or the White Stripes but I don't really love any of it. I can't think of one band from the 2000's that's completely blown me away. It's probably outthere somewhere I just haven't come across it

Since you mention the White Stripes (formed in 1997), I'll try this for you. Norwegian Black Metal band formed in 1990, but didn't play a show until 1998, and didn't come into their own until the 2000s.

I didn't know the White Stripes formed in 1997. I thought they were out in the early 2000s.

There has been a lot of music that I have discovered through xiola and this site. I won't repeat stuff already listed:

Kurt Vile - Childish Prodigy (Leviticus posted something with his art and a Vile song playing in the background):

Nico Vega (I think Wally posted a thread about them)

And let's not forget about fellow posters:

Six O'Clock Saints (Ozmic's band, although I don't know whether Oz knows about the ANR site)

Salvadore (Guysmiley's band)

I can't find a youtube clip, but found a myspace link: http://www.myspace.com/salvadorpdx

Honestly, I have trouble discerning the entire period between about 1997 and 2010 anyway.

(oops, new page... there is some great stuff right at the bottom of prev.)

Great list. QOTSA we'll count as they formed in 1997 too.

Portugal the Man are new to me, and very interesting. They remind me of the Beatles (esp. McCartney) and some other stuff I can't place... wait... Led Zeppelin! :yikes:

I forgot to add Sufjan Stevens. I'm not crazy about his other work, but his album Age of Adz (2010) blew me away.

Also:
Lady Gaga (dont care about the haters  )
Florence + The Machine
Curren$y
The Weeknd
Danny Brown
