When I was 17 I had a part-time job at the Second Cup and got fired because of my appearance(I had dread locks in 1984). The store was being run by the head office until the new francisee took over and the guy who was in charge was a really uptight asshole. He tried to say that things weren't really working out and I wasn't really suitable. I asked why not which surprised him and he tried to dismiss but eventually came out with something about my appearance wasn't suitable for the clientele...blablahblah. Anyway, I went back about a week later to talk to the franchisee and got my job back! He said that he had heard good things about me from the other staff and would rehire me. He did request that I keep my hair tied back which was fine with me. At that time ,a white girl with dreads was pretty out there.Adurentibus Spina wrote:Maybe. Phil Collins named his 1985 album after a Pump Room experience, when he was denied access because he wasn’t wearing a jacket. The title? No Jacket Required.

Reagrdless, there are certainly clubs that require certain dress that will not loan you anything.
Speaking of which, those same clubs have doormen that handpick who gets to come in the club based on how people look. I think we need a federal law declaring that illegal. Just think of all of those hurt feelings out there and people who so badly want to dance the night away but can't because they're Attractive Challenged.
Yes. Le Cirque is still considered a "formal" restaurant and Jackets are required for men
as is The River Cafe, The University Club, 21 Club....
Mostly the old school upscale restaurants. The ones on Yelp that are $$$$

No Jacket Required. Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your asshole. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.Romeo wrote:don't they loan you a dinner jacket at fancy restaurants where jackets are required??Adurentibus Spina wrote:I just think the world would be more just if we provided loaner shoes and shirts to those who wanted to partake of a private establishment but had not the means to acquire the requisite garments.

One of my favourite performances of all time.

One of the funniests things ever said.

can NOT picture you with dreads
Re: Anonymous Claims Neo-Nazi Links to Republican Ron Paul
well, that was almost 30 years ago!kv wrote:can NOT picture you with dreads
the dreads started by accident. i had a perm failure. i was trying to get ringletty curls but instead i got fuzzy waves. the hair started to mat up because i wasn't really combing it or picking it. i thought why not let it dread up? i looked like a bag lady with mangy hair for awhile before it started to look good. my methods were probably not conventional. a friend would help me twist and seperate all the time. i also figured the drier the hair the better the hair mats up. i have thick, coarse hair to beging with so it didn't take much to dry it out. also, to help bond the hair my hair would pass a lighter( ) to slightly singe the hair, to make it more pliable so that the hair bonds better. i used to get really mixed reactions. people would stop me regularly to ask if i was a rasta, why did i wear my hair like that, some called me a freak, some loved it. a jamaican guy that used to come in the shop had dreads and always say how my dreads were looking better than his. the dreads were of various sizes, but more on the thin to medium side and just past my shoulders. i also had them died like a burgundy/wine colour. eventually i cut them off because i couldn't find a job. if i worked in a creative environment where anything goes it would have been fine. it's funny how back then people with their noses pierced were considered 'freaks', now suburban housewives have their noses pierced and it no longer vioaltes a company's dresscode policy. one place i worked didn't allow: visible piercings, tattoos, or brandings.

when i played football start of every year i would cut my hair as short as trimmers would take it...sometimes in my 20's i would do it as well and i would get the craziest reactions to it "what do you think you are a nazi?"..."oh a skin head you think thats cool?" or dirty looks..all for short hair lol times have changed now it's all "what do you mean you don't have any tats?"
