Explosions in Brussels' airport

#1 Post by Larry B. » Tue Mar 22, 2016 1:07 am

Government sources say it's a terrorist attack.

Are you OK, Mescal?

Airport is closed, flights are landing in nearby airports. Apparently there are 11 people dead.

Alleged video of the explosion: https://mobile.twitter.com/OnlineMagazi ... 52/video/1

17 dead.

People being evacuated in buses.

Flanders airport increased security level to max.

2 explosions, 3rd unexploded device found.

RT says that shots were fired before the explosion. The video would show otherwise, though.

Rumours of explosions in some subway stations:
Kunst-Wet, Brussels
Maalbeek, Brussels
Schuman, Brussels

And soldiers are now at the airport.

Stay safe, buddy :wavesad:

The death toll is rising. I'm reading now there are up to 28 dead.

This was the first news I heard today when I woke up..

Stay safe, Mescal.

Yes, for me it feels very personal when the events are close in proximity. It's bound to happen here in the states as well.

I would guess these are "revenge" attacks in the aftermath of the raids a few days ago that captured that Paris terrorist Salah Abdeslam and killed several of his accomplices. Expect more security crackdowns and further erosion of personal freedoms as European governments struggle to deal with this sort of thing.

I would guess this, as every other recent so-called terrorist attack, is an inside job that helps the right-wing push their extremely xenophobic immigration laws. As it happened in France and now in Belgium, one of the first measures announced was that the borders will be more protected (or something along those lines). As if that has anything to do with anything. Foreigners = bad.

I don't buy the "suicide attack" thing for a second. You're going to tell me there were one or two suicide 'bombers', but the firefighters found a bomb that didn't go off? So the terrorists said "OK, let's blow up you two but let's also place a bomb without a human being just in case." "Well, why don't we just place 3 bombs without humans then?" "Nope, that's not the way I work. 2 humans must die and the other bomb goes without a human."

Obviously a possibility, but I think there would be more attacks if they only took 2 1/2 days to organize. I do believe Salah Abdeslam is in for a very bad day today, and in the near future.

Is it just me, or is everyone becoming less and less shocked and surprised at such events? I was saying the other day that unless it affects you directly, then events such as this are creeping into some kind of morbid normality we live with today. I'm awaiting one in the UK, and it will happen.

Maybe that is good. :noclue:

Surely not good to disregard the despair and tragedy of those directly involved, but it's good that maybe knee jerk calls for action, like war in Iraq, is muted. And also good I would say that calls for sweeping security measures like the Patriot Act are not constantly being pushed, maybe Europe is different.
