Google Talk sunset :-(

I got a message today from gmail.com that "Google Talk app for Windows will stop working on 16 Feb. 2015. It is replaced by the new Hangouts Chrome app. Install the Hangouts app from http://goo.gl/yglfk6"

That's annoying because the Google Talk app has a function that shows a popup when a new mail comes in. This is something that Google Hangouts does not have.
According to a google tips page, you can set up gmail to display a new mail notification but I get the feeling this is only for when you have gmail signed in, which for me is not all the time..

There's an add-on called Google Mail Checker that sits in the Chrome browser but again, you need to have the browser running to see if you have mail coming in..

Um... Google Hangouts integrates with Chrome and also can add a standalone icon to your taskbar. It's identical in every way to Talk, except it works properly/better. You should also be able to use this: http://www.google.ca/landing/now/#getitchromewin

Does it notify you of new mail from the system tray? Independantly from having Chrome running?

If you go to your Chrome Settings -> Advanced Settings, and check off "Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed", then you'll get access to Google Now, Hangouts, and Drive from a tray icon, even when Chrome isn't open. As far as I know, that should allow desktop notifications for Gmail to pop up. But you might need to go to your Gmail settings: open Gmail, click the Settings button in the top right corner, then under the General tab, scroll down to "Desktop Notifications" and select either "New mail notifications on" or "Important mail notifications on".

This should give you what you want (and more/better).

Hahahhahaha I was typing up a response detailing what I'd done each step of the way as it wasn't working properly with three test emails I sent myself from my work account to my gmail then I was almost finished the tome when my Google Talk showed another new mail notification and I thought to myself "fucking hell i'm right, shit thing doesn't work" when a second alter a Google notification came up for that same email that Google Talk notified me about.... It's not the same as it doesn't have the same "Check Mail Now" and "Go To Inbox" options as GTalk but it's close enough and will have to do.. Not sure why they couldn't just use the same features in Hangouts as in Chat but whatever Google, way to fuck me....

Anyway, thanks....

By what you wrote it looks like you had problems with Google Talk? What issues did you encounter?

Ummmm..... also, it's February 18th here and afternoon of Feb 17 in Google town but Talk is still working (touch wood they meant "no longer supported" rather than "stop working and die" in their original message.....

Heh. Okay, so the issue with Talk was that it wasn't properly integrated with the "chat" feature that was already embedded in Gmail, and this got even more complicated with the attempt to add chat to Google+. I used Talk as a way to chat with people who weren't on FB or any other instant-messaging system for quite a while, but I found that it often simply wouldn't send messages, especially if I started a conversation in Gmail, then closed the browser and the other person kept typing... their message would show up in Talk, but then my responses, typed in Talk wouldn't show... so it was pretty fucked up, and I think Google ultimately wanted to integrate all their text-based services all along. In fact, these days, you can use Hangouts as your default text-messaging app on your Android phone (allowing Google contact instant messages and your cell-phone's text/sms messages to show up in the same app). It's pretty handy (also functions as Google's answer to Skype, with voice and video calls to phone numbers and other Hangouts users).

The issue of desktop notifications for other Google services is similar to the above in that it came about as a result of offering features separately within multiple Google apps, but eventually this leads to really unwieldy backend stuff... it makes way more sense to just use a single table in a database for all notifications across all Google apps, which I suspect is why they've created "Google Now". So what you really want is for Google Now to offer desktop notifications for Gmail in as useful a way as Google Talk used to... and I get that. I think that is pretty much what it's supposed to do, but as you've noted, it definitely needs to be improved.

I think for younger users who have multiple devices, it's less of a problem. For example, my phone often buzzes/beeps (with a Gmail specific tone/buzz) before anything shows up on my desktop, so either I'll read the email in the Inbox app on my phone or just check the site that way.

Also, if it's a serious concern for you, why not just integrate your Gmail account with your desktop computer's native Mail app?

I hated the chat feature embedded in gmail so i switched it off and just used the google talk app so i didn't encounter those issues when swapping from mail-integrated chat to app-chat..

Yeah all my logged in devices beep when i get a mail or chat..

I definitely do NOT want my personal mail account integrated in my work client..... plus I think the global security policies would not allow it anyway... I'm just a grumpy old man who likes things that worked before.. "why do those kids in the googles need to change things that ain't broke?" etc etc.. For me, Chat was the shit.... oh well, moving with the times i guess..

I didn't realize it was a work-client thing... that makes sense.

I've been trialing the google notifs thing with the "run in background" on and it just doesn't work as well as the old Google Talk Notifier... I have had my Chrome both on and off and sometimes i get notifications of mails, other times I don't... It's pretty random.. yes i'm on the latest version of chrome...

Mind you it's not the end of the world, and it's probably making me more productive so I guess.. whatever.. It would've been nice if they could make it work properly but you know, that's probably just too much work.. or in the too hard basket...

I'm afraid Google is busy.

They are planning/building this:
(Estimated cost in the multi-multi-Billions....and that's before the cost overuns.... in the Billions) :yikes:

(This is actually pretty cool....if a development HAD to happen, this is how I would go about it......would feel uneasy about destroying Mountain View though..... :scared: )

Maybe that is why they are slacking on services.... :hehe:

Trying to compete with that $5 Billion Apple donut down the street...... :noclue:

Apple complex....NOT COOL! (*edit)

Facebook feels left out........ :nyrexall:
