"The Malvinas are Argentine" in every bus in Argentina.

#1 Post by Larry B. » Fri Jan 02, 2015 3:54 pm

Here are the news in Spanish: http://www.clarin.com/politica/transpor ... 72362.html

Essentially, today a law was passed that obliges all public transport to carry the legend "Las Islas Malvinas son Argentinas", both on buses and on bus stops.

The law applies "to all domestic means of public transport, both within the country and outside of it." They are obliged to display the text in a visible and highlighted location, with a specific font and format (set forth by the law.) Amongst others, it applies to buses, trains, ships, boats and airplanes, along with their respective stops and/or stations.

Interesting.

No idea yet... I went around the Argentinian subreddit, but it's not even posted there. I think most would agree with the message wholeheartedly but think that the law is over the top and it's being passed just to distract from the stupidity and corruption of their president.

Oh, you meant the islands themselves! I thought you meant Argentina.

Yeah, the referendum was news here. You have to consider the fact that 89% of the population in the Falklands were born either there or in the UK. There were only 13 Argentinians taking part in the poll. The result was absolutely expected.

The rest of the country want the islands, of course. However, I think their logic behind the demand is extremely flawed.

Yeah like um... democracy means the government is the people in the place where they are... so if they say they want to be part of the UK and the UK wants them to be, then they will be part of the UK. The question of how to deal with nationalist minorities is a big one (see: Ukraine and Russians), but there's no democratic means to appropriate those islands for Argentina. They'd have to invade again, and probably forcibly repopulate the island with Argentinians, and that would just look terrible.

We have national elections in five months. Five months of MP's trying to con people into voting for what is essentially the same party.

Let me guess what the choices are: "republican" and "extreme republican"? Seems to be the standard these days :nyrexall:

Well, it's 'left' v 'right'. 30 years ago that might have meant something. These days it's all the same shite. And then there is the *new* UK Independence party who want to get out of Europe and keep things 'British'....ie deport everyone not born here. (Not really, but you get the gist)

Yeah, that's what I suspected... even here it's like that. Our "socialist" president is anything but a socialist. The private world and the right wing still dominates all. Abortion is still illegal, homosexuals don't have the equal rights, the low and middle class are exploited, companies don't pay taxes as they should, public healthcare and education are a shambles and there's no real plan to fix any of this. And if I remember correctly, Chile is still the country with the highest income inequality on the face of the Earth. Just like the socialist bible says it should be.

Abortions are illegal? Does that mean Chile's population is rapidly increasing? Or are people very strict and ultra careful?

Over here we have the biggest teenage pregnancy rate in the whole of Europe. Who do we blame? Education? TV? Booze? If abortion was illegal here, the UK's population would be fucking massive. We'd have thousands of Grandparents in their 30's and 40's. Nice.

Abortions are illegal but widely practiced. The wealthy go to private clinics and their doctors make sure things are swept under the carpet. The poor go to wherever they can and have dangerous procedures done to them, which is swept under the carpet as well.

Another thing that happens with some wealthy families is that young girls give birth and the family gets in touch with "their priest", who then takes the kid and gives him to a family that cannot have children. What the priests receive in return is never mentioned, of course. It's illegal, but nothing has happened to the priests who have been accused of doing it.

Yet another way in which Chile is basically the Texas of South America.
